a quick character reference for me so i can finally start drawing these shmucks consistently. will probably add more characters later. please click to zoom on teeny furries~

notes:

-bruce is so dinky he looks like a child left unattended in a mcdonald's play area

-I decided to change Bruce from gay to bi. Idk, I feel like I covered a loooot of gay panic/gay angst territory with Pandoraverse!Bruce, and not that that wasn't (very) fun, but I feel like I'd be retreading a lot of ground if I do it again in Fuzzbutts. Wallaby Bruce just gives me tiny bi vibes, he is a tiny grumpy bi guy....not that he'd ever express attraction to anyone, of course. I apologize if you were attached to gay Bruce, know that Fuzzbutts!Bruce doesn't erase the existence of (canonically gay) Pandoraverse!Bruce.

-Sunny is geeeeenderfluid. This is something he's only discovered recently, after he'd begun dating Skye. Although initially anxious to tell her, he was delighted and grateful to find that Skye was 100% supportive, and still as willing to fawn all over him (now using Sunny's pronouns of choice). Sunny's not normally easy to fluster, but boy howdy does Skye manage, especially when she starts up with "my girlfriend is the prettiest girlfriend in the world and i'll suplex anyone who thinks they can hold a candle to her" bragging.

Skye is genderqueer herself, but still figuring things out. For now, she knows she likes to dress in ways that make her feel beautiful- but also sometimes, it's lovely to feel handsome and dapper!

-Priscilla is trans, everybody stans. She's also one of the tiniest members in the cast.

-Bellon uses no sexuality label besides queer. They simply like what they like, and they know it when they see it. (In case anybody's confused on Bellon's flags, they mean nonbinary and intersex, respectively).

-Silver is so fucking massive compared to his baby brother holy cow. He's bi, but currently unaware of the fact. Silver is a hot-blooded 100% heterosexual kangaroo buck that only dates pretty ladies and does not at all have increasingly confused feelings about his best friend Logan.

-Logan is fucknormous, so tall he threw off the composition of the character lineup. His stripey fur pattern come from his grandfather, who was a tasmanian tiger. A fun fact about Logan is that he unthinkingly stoops down to talk to Bruce, which makes Bruce so fucking mad you have no idea

I, quite literally, would die for Skye 🥺

Colbyr

Your titles give me life and all them bi flags give me purpose

Calypso

Ayye, Tasmanian here. It's been cool to watch you draw Aussie animals, and now some Tassie ones too 💛

Dean

Goodness I love these designs. I am curious though, how prevalent is queerphobia in the Fuzzbutts verse? I know you've mentioned Tibbs and Perry are married so it's legal, but is it present anywhere in this universe or does the bigotry more exist towards predator/prey relationships instead? I'm just a sucker for worldbuilding society issues lol

Robo87

MY BABBUS 😭❤❤ I have wholeheartedly adopted every single one of them I love how unapologetically queer Fuzzbutts is and how the general mindset for it is "make it gayer" I also love Logan's new stripes he's such a handsome boi! Is he now Australian as well or just with roots from there? Is dear old tazzy gramps still alive? And once after some celebratory post-game drinks Silver accidentally let it slip to his bro how pretty he thought his fur was and Logan walked around with a dumb ass grin and happy blush for like a week

Robo87

And I absouletly support bi Bruce 💗💗 though honestly with your past discriptions of him not really seeming to be into anyone I can't help but personally headcanon him as possibly demisexual (grey ace) as well.

Oh yay I love to-scale lineups like this. Bellon and logan are my favorite designs so far but everyone looks great. I like how all the kangaroo characters have been male so far so they're missing the most streotypical kangaroo thing: a pouch. You've done a great job with this series.

Thank you! Gay marriage is definitely legal in Fuzzbutts. I hope you like ramblessss Irl, the animal kingdom stands in stark contrast to human perception of sexuality and gender norms. Dolphins and giraffes are notoriously, to use the scientific term, pretty dang gay. Something like 90% of all observed giraffe mating is between two males, and it comes complete with nuzzling and foreplay. Male lions, as well as male elephants, commonly form long-term pair-bonds, complete with heavy affection and mating. Female albatrosses frequently form partnerships and raise chicks together. Female marmots frequently bond and mate with other females. Bonobos pretty much live in a free love hippie commune, with little consideration for the sex of their partners. Furthermore, the animal kingdom plays fast and loose with our concept of gender. Whiptail lizards, for example, are an exclusively female species that reproduces through parthenogenesis (cloning). Male clownfish will change their sex to replace the dominant female if she dies. Male seahorses are the ones to carry and birth offspring. Some lionesses grow manes and engage in male behavior. Most animals are not monogamous, in fact monogamy is rare. And while certainly it would be inappropriate to impose our human notion of LGBTQ+ identities onto animal behavior, it's also kinda absurd to insist on heteronormativity. So! As "queerness" is common in the animal kingdom, social attitudes toward queer identities are largely relaxed and accepting in Fuzzbutts. Same-sex couples are so common they don't warrant a second glance. A trans citizen that wishes to begin their transition only has to fill out a bit of paperwork at city hall, there are workers there to help with name changes and edits to identity records. Queerplatonic couples can officiate their bond and raise children jointly. This is not to say there aren't conservative pockets that oppose queer folk. Basically, species with more rigid gender roles are more likely to be insistent that everyone adhere to their way of living. Bruce's father, believes it's a kangaroo buck's duty to be strong and dominant and settle down with a sensible doe. He believes that's just the way of the world, and that any deviation from this path is unnatural and senseless. Two males together? How absurd! How will they reproduce? Who will care for the joeys if there's no mother present? He does not believe a queer couple can love each other the way a buck and doe can, and he buys into several negative stereotypes about queer folk (eg. that gay males are flamboyant and weak and not what a true buck should strive to be). He would definitely have a problem with his sons being bi, which is why they both keep their identities secret (Silver particularly is so desperate for his dad's approval he never considered he might be ANYTHING other than straight), Different species have different biology, and this somewhat guides their cultural views on queerness. Irl canine packs tend to be pretty egalitarian, with both males and females leading the pack and raising the pups, so canines in Fuzzbutts tend to have an "anything goes" policy in regard to sexuality and gender. A pack can be three lesbian poly wolf moms raising their pups, or a straight dog and his trans bobcat gf, or an asexual coyote in a queerplatonic partnership with her fox girlfriend. Sunny's parents didn't bat an eye at Sunny being genderfluid, or Jude being a lesbian, or Cass being nonbinary. Pack is pack. You're correct that the most prevalent bigotry (relationship-wise, anyway), is aimed at predator/prey relationships. A girl dating a girl is perfectly normal. But a LIONESS girl dating a ZEBRA girl? That's gonna turn some heads, maybe even earn some rude whispering. With Tibbs and Perry, well, their marriage is often written off as some weird fetish thing. Predators are supposed to be dominating and fierce, yet you have Perry "lowering" himself to date a prey animal- and even more embarrassingly, a prey animal many times his own size and strength. This is seen as HIGHLY undignified, and people rudely assume Perry is getting off on a prey animal dominating HIM (which goes against the natural order!). Tibbs is perceived to either be a dullard prey animal tricked into a relationship by a shifty, untrustworthy (probably perverted!) predator, or he's seen as a predator in his own right, getting gratification from lording his power over a helpless love-addled little lynx. Tibbs and Perry are miffed about all these presumptions, and wish people understood that they are together for no reason besides the fact they love one another. (Though Perry'd be lying if he said he wasn't attracted to that boar brawn, and Tibbs is just as appreciative of Perry's so-called feline cunning...)

Thanks. :) I thought about having him be demi, buuuut I think maybe I should hold off on adding ace/demi characters until I'm committed to having a wide variety of them, otherwise Bruce will fall into the same trap as Midnight Abyss, where the one ace character is the grumpy/surly character. So idk if Bruce will officially be demi, could go either way. I figured he's gone through so much suffering that as an adult he's incredibly reluctant to let anybody get close to him. Things like relationships and attraction are a waste of time and only lead to pain, so there's no point in ever sparing anyone a second glance.

Dean

Okay so I had a wildly shitty day so reading rambles about gay furries made it better, thanks lol. But in theory, would a couple between two animals naturally present in the same food chain be more taboo or considered more perverse? Like you mentioned a lion/zeeb couple, lions sure do eat zebras, is that looked on more strangely than uh let's say an alligator and an idk red panda who would never see each other in the wild unless somebody punted it into the other one's zoo enclosure? In my brain I'd think that the lion/zebra gals would be "weirder" in society's eyes since they're supposed to be in direct conflict at least history and nature wise.

Melody Williamson

How does soceity view omnivores? I know dogs kinda are omnivores but what about something like a rat? Something without big scary fangs? How are hyper aggressive herbivores like hippos viewed?

Paddiefrog

Loving these great character designs! (and loving all those bi flags lol)

lopoddity

Nah, not really. The bigotry against pred/prey relationships remains the same across the board, regardless of species. The concern is that the predator is dangerous to/wants to eat the prey animal, so the stigma is present no matter the if it's a lion/zebra couple or a grizzly bear/ostrich couple. The only time the stigma is reduced is when the predator is significantly smaller than the prey, like in the case of Perry and Tibbs. Then the couple is seen as less as a potentially dangerous fetish case and more of a joke. The inverse, where the predator is significantly bigger than the prey (eg. a tiger dating a bunny) are seen as the MOST dangerous/fetishy and treated with the most concern/ridicule/scorn.

lopoddity

The treatment of omnivores varies greatly. As in our world, the public is not always the most informed about the cultures/behaviors of others, and people are exactly as prone to stereotyping based on appearance. For example, rats don't have a particularly positive social perception, they're seen as lowly trash-eaters, since their diets are so varied (and cuz yeah, some of them do eat trash, which is actually very helpful for city waste reduction). However mice, who have a similar omnivorous diet, are nonetheless viewed more positively simply because of their cuteness factor. Hippos also have a "cuteness factor", so the public tends to view them as sluggish, docile, and harmless. Herbivores, especially large herbivores, enjoy a lot of social privilege- for example, if a hippo were to snap and stomp/maul someone, the public would dismiss it as an isolated incident, or just the hippo having a bad day. However, if a carnivore were to do the same, this violence would be seen as inherent to their kind, and the incident would be used to further view carnivores as dangerous. Omnivores tend to be more content than carnivores simply because they have an easier time maintaining healthy, satisfying diets. Penny, a lemur, can buy a big ol' bucket of tasty toasted grubs from the convenience store to snack on, while Jude, a dire wolf, is stuck waiting on pay day if she wants to be able to afford a tasty cut of real meat. In the meantime, she's gotta make due with crummy cheap faux meat. This tends to breed resentment in carnivores.
