this was a warm-up doodle for a request drawing i'm working on~

"You know the thing about a shark…he's got lifeless eyes, black eyes, like a doll's eye. When he comes at ya, he doesn't seem be living, until he bites ya and the black eyes roll over white.” Quint, Jaws (1975)

Here's a fun fact. Great white sharks have eyes that appear totally black, but if you examine em up close, you'll find that great whites have colored irises. Just like us.

It's super cool and a wonder of nature and whatnot and boyyyyy does it give me the willies hnnnng i love it

Katie is a friendly great white with an unfortunately terrifying face, but if you really get to know her, gaze into those pretty blue eyes up close....you'll find that yeah nah, she's still exactly as scary. Between her excellent night vision and killer sense of smell and electro-reception, Katie can find you in the dark long before you even know she's there....

(Not that she'd ever spook you on purpose, of course. She's just bringing you a flashlight, silly. Wouldn't want you to stumble and get hurt! 😊)

Are skates, rays, and chimaeras also sapient, since they're part of the same family?

Has anyone considered that they are actually being very mean about her big sweet eyes here. Her darling baby black button eyes.

She’s adorable and I love the texture on her skin!

Okay okay wait I’m curious. How does Katie go about breathing on land? Can she use gills and lungs? That would make sense since she has little leggies. Or does she need like a fish bowl on her head in the cartoons?

I'm not sure what it is, but I love Katie.

I love anthro fish designs so much! They’re so fun!

Awwww, she's adorably terrifying 😳 😬 🥰😍

Haha, no fish bowl necessary. :) Sharks in FB are an extraordinary feat of evolution. Most sapient anthropomorphic marine life consists of mammals, but sharks are one of the very few intelligent fish. They evolved sturdier cartilage than their irl counterparts, able to support their large bodies out of water- even evolving dexterous hands and a bipedal gait. All FB sharks possess both lungs and gills, and can survive underwater or on land indefinitely. To prevent them from drowning, sharks have an epiglottis-like structure that seals their airways upon being submerged in water, triggering them to open their mouth to push water through their gills. Similarly, feeling open air on their bodies and gills triggers them to expel any leftover seawater, close their gills, and begin respirating via the lungs. These processes are automatic, much like the bradycardic response in human infants (a human baby will instinctively hold its breath if submerged in water). It’s anatomically impossible for a shark to breathe air and water at the same time, their breathing reflexes work like a lever, switching from gill to lung breathing as required by their environment. Evolving lung structures is what allowed sharks to develop speech. Katie is technically even capable of utilizing her lungs to perform mouth-to-mouth CPR….if only her giant teeth didn’t get in the way. (As a swimming teacher, she instead keeps an air pump on hand to rescue drowned critters). Much like bull sharks in our world, FB shark species are euryhaline fish, evolved to live in both freshwater and saltwater. (An irl great white would die quickly if you placed it in a freshwater lake) FB shark species can regulate the salinity in their bodies the same way mammals regulate their blood temperature, though some saltwater sharks claim to be “allergic” to freshwater. More sensitive sharks may experience feelings of nausea or disorientation when swimming too long in freshwater, this condition is known as being “waterlogged” and is treated by leaving the body of water and ingesting electrolyte sport drinks. Sharks must keep their gills moist (there are special creams and sprays for this), and drink lots of water to stay hydrated and healthy. There’s a popular fizzy shark drink that contains saltwater and is fish-flavored- pretty much every other creature finds it disgusting, but Katie loves her Seaside Pop!

Thanks for the response! Very well thought out. I feel like you watch a hoard of nature documentaries just to prep for a new character XD Shork week will be here in just a few months!
