Darlin', I swear,Once you been thereThere ain't a viewBeneath the blueThat could ever compare,The only thing missin' is you as my guestOn that little patch of heavenWay out west~

um yes i DO fucks with that home on the range soundtrack yes i WILL take my cringe trophy thanks

as i've been spamming y'all with furry content i eventually noticed something was...off. I was introducing all these characters and their stories without really touching on the actual world they live in. With fanart, especially MLP, a lot of the fun is that the setting is already pre-established, so you can play with the characters like dolls in a sandbox. And that's fun! But I think years of doing it kinda atrophied my world-building abilities. I'll be making more of an effort now to flesh out the various settings of Fuzzbutts. :3

FB is primarily set in a vaguely Boston-like metropolis called Critter City. This is where most of the characters reside, including Skye, though she didn't always. Miss Skye Shepherd was born and raised in the fictional city of Dogdale, on a big ass strawberry farm. Despite being the last born of her litter, Skye is the most responsible and driven of her siblings, which is why her mother Strawberry intended for her to eventually take over the farm. Skye, not especially keen on picking berries in the middle of nowhere for the rest of her life, went "lol nah" and moved to the big city when she turned 20.

Mama Strawberry is definitely holding a grudge about this, and has put off her retirement in the hopes of eventually guilting/badgering Skye into taking her rightful place at Pawberry. Strawberry is the kind of mom that loves her pups with every ounce of her soul, and worked hard to give them a better childhood than she had, buuuut she struggles with being vulnerable or open or saying "I love you" or "I'm proud of you". She is extremely blunt, which usually comes across as mean. Skye desperately wants her mother's approval and is perpetually frustrated that her old Ma can't ever seem to say anything nice about Skye's job or hair or boyfriend. Dammit, Ma!

notes:

-I tweaked Shadow's design, hope his flirty fuckboy-cowboy personality shines through a lil better. Nobody in Skye's family is a purebred, they're all a big genetic mishmash of collies and shepherds and herding dogs. Of all the siblings, Shadow is closest to Skye and wishes she'd take all the responsibility of inheriting the farm off his hands. He misses her, but isn't good at expressing genuine emotions, so he too tries to badger her into moving back home. Shadow is casually dismissive to Sunny, whom he calls "goldilocks", viewing him as a spoilt scrawny city-slicker. Sunny spends a lot of their interactions trying to impress the guy and prove he's just as strong and tough, usually failing miserably (to Shadow's amusement).

-Skye's siblings (whom will probably all get updated designs) are often spread out working across the farm property, but can communicate quickly over large distances through howls and barks.

-Strawberry owns a pellet gun and her current pastime seems to be using it to spook off aspiring social media influencers trespassing on her property for pretty selfies. Sunny finds her absolutely terrifying.

-Having lived away from home for years, Skye has lost her country accent. This was somewhat deliberate on her end- though her accent comes back in full force when she's excited or angry (especially at her family). Much like her Ma, Skye is pretty creative with cusswords.

I love the world building. I think it’s interesting how you brought the concept of animals selling their own products for other animals to consume. Is that how predators meet their dietary needs? Through things like eggs, cheese, and milk? You mentioned lab grown meat I think (might be wrong) and I feel like that might be awkward for prey animals, to see a predator chowing down on something that’s suppose to be you.

SketchyBug

We live for the Home on The Range reference, sis. We live.

lopoddity

It's very awkward. :) Meat production and consumption is a highly contentious issue in FB. But yes, one of the easier ways for predators to get protein is to consume animal by-products like eggs, cheese, and milk, which are commonly sold and bought through markets. Animals need special permits to sell eggs/milk for public consumption and their goods must be routinely subjected to health inspection (or risk being fined). Other options for predators include fake meats (eg. soy burgers), nuts, insects, and fish, and finally, lab-grown meat (expensive and controversial, most working-class carnivores only have this for very special occasions. I'm certain there's no undercurrents of resentment among carnivores about this! :D)

lopoddity

finally, someone with TASTE >:O

SketchyBug

Girl, Patch o' Heaven is a bop and a half, and Pearl is a dope character design that people be sleepin on. Honestly, that era of Disney animation is kinda overly hated. The only one that really deserves the ire is Meet the Robinsons because most of the movie is dull as hell, and yet people love it for the twist and the twist only. But I don't wanna talk your ear off about that. Home on the Range cranks, and so do these designs.

KaeWolfe

I love their designs so much! I'm really loving the world building and would indeed love to see more :> Looking forward to seeing the updated designs for the others as well! Also I would absolutely love to see Sunny interacting with everyone. Especially Shadow and Strawberry. The description alone seems it would make for some hilarious doodles XD

lopoddity

My dude. My guy. Listen. I unironically ADORE Home On the Range. I know it's stupid cheesy and makes weird style choices but that honestly just adds to it's charm? I LOVE the character designs, the backgrounds are beautiful, the animation is fun, and "Patch of Heaven" is SO sweet and lovely. I'm nostalgic for most of the "garbage era" Disney movies, cuz those are the movies I saw as a kid. I like Meet the Robinsons, thought mostly just for Bowler Hat Guy. :)

SketchyBug

Yeah, and the fact that I love Home on the Range is a testament because I normally don't care for westerns, but I feel the humor is just on point and I love the dynamic between the trio of cows.

Bigsmile

IDK, I've really dug the world building so far. I think some visual references for how the world looks with all these weird animals going about would be cool but that's a pretty minor request. Also, I approve of Strawberry shooting influencers with a pellet gun..... I think we should take that into consideration for the real world 🤔

TheTabbyBadger

Oooo I’m loving to see the worldbuilding, can’t wait to see more! I like the mixture of real and fictional (home-brewed city but in Montana to give us a frame of reference). Also love Strawberry and these updated designs! Can’t wait to see family interactions some day :D

lopoddity

I can't really condone using a firearm against a (mostly) harmless selfie-seeker, but that's just the kinda lady Strawberry is. She almost certainly doesn't fire AT trespassers though (because she could be sued), she probably just fires into the air to spook em. Skye argues that Strawberry should embrace the trend, since the influencers are basically giving the farm free advertising, while Strawberry argues she doesn't want a bunch of klutzy self-obsessed yahoos trampling her delicate strawberry fields.

MEllegoo

I think it's great you're addressing it though. Most animal based worlds just flat-out ignore it (or just Beastar it). It makes for a complex society that feels real and human. This reminds me of that episode of Adventure Time where Finn meets Rainicorn's parents and they eat "soy human"

Bigsmile

Yeah, maybe shooting beebees at influencers is a bit much...... But damn! I can sympathize with Strawberry!!!

gamigami

they look so lovely, i love what youve told us so far!! also the semi-lineless artstyle you use is always a treat! a question: i forgot do the fuzzbutts have multiple babies at once like actual dogs or were they all born seperately in different years? i ask since you say firstborn and lastborn pup and all the siblings look similarly aged (at least to me lol)

lopoddity

Thank you. :) As for reproduction, it's kind of a coinflip whether critters have one baby or multiple. If I wanna get all pseudo-scientific with it, I imagine that as animals in FB evolved intelligence and bipedalism, it became evolutionarily advantageous to have smaller and smaller litter sizes, to spare poor mom from having to pass multiple big-headed, big-brained offspring through a narrow, humanoid pelvis. In modern FB, large litters (10+) are rare, medium litters (3-5) are not too unusual, and single offspring are increasingly common. Sunny was the only pup born to his parents, who'd been hoping for a litter. Skye is one of a litter of five siblings. Mama Strawberry fired out her five blind deaf pinkish pudgy potato pubbies and probably went back to work that very afternoon. When I say Shadow is the firstborn, it's only by a few minutes.

Mastodon

I love the way you drew the scenery in the farm picture! And the pawprint windows are just darling c: All your Fuzzbutts stuff is interesting, but I'm really happy we'll get to see more locations and worldbuilding! Definitely excited for whatever's coming next!

DragonCookies

I was JUST about to leave a comment saying the exact same thing. Home on the Range is a charming film with a banging soundtrack and that’s a hill I’m willing to die on

Angsty Ram

I love the detail on the sign, with what looks to be the families paw prints. I don’t know why I just find that super cute ^^ (I also how I am right in that assumption)

lopoddity

Thanks! And you're correct, Ma and Pa Shepherd and each of the then-toddler aged pups dipped a paw in paint to leave their mark on the sign. And then, two seconds after this wholesome family moment the pups started flinging paint at each other and trying to eat it

Robo87

Listen I still jam out to the fucking yodel song occasionally when I'm doing dishes so I ain't judging babe. Home on the Range is a good movie and now I might be picturing Shadow sounding a lot like Buck. Speaking of I might be simping now for cowdog fuck boi. I love his design! I can easily see him having a love/hate relationship with his lot in life. On one hand, yeah he'd really like his sis to come back and take the farm off his hands so he can figure out his own deal. But at the same time he has no idea WHAT that deal might be. And maybe he does take a dumb amount of denied pride over a big, beautiful new crop of strawberries....and loves the peaceful nights after a hard day's work with his sibbies jaming out to a banjo and howling to the moon. And if he gets bored or frustrated he absouletly has a neighbor or two he gets up to all sorts of stress relief with. And maybe that one VERY irritating wandering coyote farm hand he may have had angry roll abouts in the hay with LOOK AT SKYE!!! Omg precious beautiful pupper!!!!!!

Robo87

Also Pawberry Acres is BEAUTIFUL

lopoddity

It's just trendy to hate on it tbh. I decided to watch it last night for the first time in years and yeah, it had parts that were dumb and annoying, but so do like 90% of kid flicks. I still found it pretty charming and cute overall, and the dynamic between the three cows is genuine and sweet. Although....I did find myself thinking about the fact they're dairy cows. Cows don't produce milk unless they're pregnant or have birthed a calf. Meaning that Maggie, Grace, and Mrs Calloway have all each had at least one calf....but we don't see any calves in the movie. One can assume that the calves were taken away or sold, either to become new dairy cows (if female) or be slaughtered for meat and hide (if male). Which makes me wonder why the cows are fighting so hard to save this farm instead of just wanting to be free? You have nothing to lose but your chains cowrades

SketchyBug

I stopped questioning this shit when I saw male cows with udders in Barnyard XD

Melody Williamson

How come nobody in the family wants to inherit the farm? Is it not doing well financially? I feel like most people would be super happy and lucky to inherit a well off family business

lopoddity

It's a LOT of work, and the work is challenging and constant. Farming is a business like any other, and the success of the business not only depends on the leadership of the business manager, but also on outside factors entirely outside a farmer's control. Availability of labor, market prices, rough weather. Wind, hail, snow, too much rainfall, not enough rainfall- all of these can destroy a crop. Pests, mold, and blight can render an entire harvest worthless. The chores are constant, the setbacks are constant, you work from sunrise to late into the evening, you can't really take days off, and forget vacations. Pawberry Acres is currently surviving because of Strawberry putting decades of hard work into it, often neglecting her own health and her relationships with her children. Pawberry CAN fail though, and quickly too- especially against ever-increasing competition from local grocery chains. And Strawberry would probably never forgive it if one of her children let the family farm go under. It's a lot of pressure. That's why Skye declined to take over, she didn't want to deal with the stress and labor that's so thoroughly worn down her mother and turned her so joyless. Even Shadow is very reluctant to take over Pawberry, as it means an end to his freedom, and an expectation to settle down and marry and put his own future pups to work on the farm. This isn't to say that NONE of the pups are interested. Skye's sister, Star, has voiced her interest in acquiring Pawberry Acres, but Mama Strawberry seems convinced that her "flighty" daughter would run the place into the ground. Skye's brother Scallywag also wouldn't mind taking over, but in Strawberry's opinion, lacks the discipline and business acumen to succeed. Strawberry doesn't even REALLY want to let Shadow have the farm, he's her fallback option if Skye can well and truly never be convinced.

Non-Euclidean Cat

Not related to the picture, but your comments about world-building immediately made me think about what that world's version of fantasy entertainment would be like and an animated movie feature humans came to mind, titled Hutopia. :)

lopoddity

Sometimes, but I often prefer to use fiction to explore problems within the real world. FB is set in a cartoony version of metropolitan America, so the public transit systems are crap, lol. At the same time, the cost of living is high and the traffic is horrendous, so most of the characters don't have cars.

Azure-Art-Wave

I swear, I only ever heard the song lyrics in portuguese from when I when I was a kid (I'm brazilian :) ), but it didn't take more than a glance and somehow I could understand right away where it was from. That takes me back <3 Wow! I didn't find it cringe at all XD In fact I throughly enjoyed seeing it paired with the info on Skye's family farm <3
