in which Buddy meets Sunny's new girlfriend, Skye, and opinions are shared

y'know, I didn't originally set out to make Sunny's parents baby boomers (they were both born in the early 1960s), but I looked it up and to my surprise, their birth years place them as late boomers, not generation Xers like I thought. They've boomer'ed their way into my heart~

Both of Sunny's parents are reasonably friendly to Skye, but privately Biscuit and Buddy have quite a few issues with this strange girl their precious son has elected to date. Buddy sees Skye (who is a social media writer and activist) as distressingly opinionated and rather headstrong. Skye would argue that she's not "too opinionated", just, yanno, reasonably concerned with making the world a better place- a concept that is threatening to an old dog like Bud, as he's quite comfortable with the status quo and fears change. What's a young pup like her know about runnin' a company, anyhow? Bud's been in the business for thirty years!! And there's no harm in plastic chew toys, dang it, Buddy was raised with lead paint and drinkin' from the hose and he turned out just fine! Kids today are just plain soft! >:O

Sunny, meanwhile, quite respects Skye's intellect and likes her precisely because she challenges him on shit. He never really questioned the world around him until he met her (and also Bruce), and he has a lot of honest dumb admiration for his girlfriend (and the way she rattles his parents).

...After this barbecue, Buddy will quietly join his wife in giving Sunny "entirely innocent" running updates on that sweet mild-mannered labrador girl that lives up the street, in the hopes Sunny will eventually come to his senses and settle down with someone agreeable.

Notes:

-The "pork" Buddy is referring to is lab-grown meat, cultivated from animal cells. No pig people were harmed in the making of that hot dog! (But eating "real" meat remains a pretty debated subject in FB...)

-We can see where the dorky, neater way Sunny dresses around his parents. His mother Biscuit is pretty relentless in trying to slick back his hair and will pull out her puppy dog eyes to get her "handsome pup" into expensive fitted clothes (she ironed them herself, darling!), and Sunny has learned it easier to go with it than try to wear his usual thrift shop fashion.

-Jude may or may not have formed a tiny, innocent crush on Skye, who is too soft and pretty for her own good. Skye probably knows about it and finds it cute (not really the reaction Jude wants but okay), and goes out of her way to befriend this giant awkward wolf among dogs. Eventually Jude will get a grip and their bond becomes sister-like.

-Biscuit is probably in the background sipping a glass of red wine and sighing. Cass is busy documenting how many hot dogs she can cram in her mouth.

Holy shit it's literally me and my husband with his parents, compete with the fact that he sees himself as a golden retriever/lab and me as a border collie.

ik this is an older post, but how does the selling of meat products factor into fuzzbutts? i had assumed it was kind of a zootopia where only mammals are sapient so predators could live off of birds, fish and bugs but im not sure that was correct. if the sausages buddy's cooking are made of pork, where did it come from? is it donated from people who've passed away? is there a meat industry? are there non-sapient animals in fuzz-butts like a normal pig or cow? im very curious OwO

lopoddity

Hello sorry! I just saw this. Many animals are fully sapient in FB, the only exceptions are fish and insects, and even this is tricky, because some fish and insects have been domesticated as pets, some with intelligence on level to an irl small mammal. Carnivores in FB have historically eaten fish and insects and meat substitutes, such as tofu, or artificial meat (usually an odd tasting protein sludge sold as sandwich slices, patties, pies, or kibble). There exists a booming, highly questionable egg and dairy market to sell the byproducts of hens and cattle. But within the last twenty years or so, there’s been great progress in cultivating authentic meat grown from animal cells. As the labs have refined their processes, lab-grown meat has become available to the average consumer, although it is quite expensive. Lab meat is fraught with controversy, with many prey and pred animals alike pushing to outlaw it, but the meat industry has risen to become an indomitable titan, raking in billions every year, lobbying hard to remain legal, and advertising itself as healthy, necessary, and a family-friendly. Hot dogs are made with scrap bits of low grade lab meat, so they’re one of the cheaper things a carnivore can buy. They are definitely made from recreated pig flesh, but no pigs had to die to make them. Perfectly ethical then, right? …..Right?

Hey if there’s plastic that means there’s oil. Are there still those Dawn soap commercials where they showcase birds covered in oil. Are there baby ducklings covered in paint for the commercials

WAr

I was kind of hoping you’d go this route with his parents! I can’t wait to see dumb golden retriever boy getting his soft cozy world view challenged and slowly changing. I’d love to hear about the lovely Labrador girl too, just what Buddy believes would be an ideal girl for Sunny I suppose? So what are the rules/customs about eating real meat in this world?

D

Obsessed with Jude's interaction here. As a mild mannered butch lesbian myself I totally get the (innocuous, non-flirtatious) feeling of "here pretty girl I got you this thing you wanted ahah oh gosh oh golly it was no problem aw gee"

Emma Breslauer

Love the expressions on this, especially Bud's! God I can imagine it WOULD be pretty ghoulish to be at a dinner where someone's like "oh don't worry, we didn't kill anyone to get this steak. This is just synthesized human meat grown in a lab!"

TheTabbyBadger

Oh I love the expressions in this! And awww Judith is so sweet. I love that she and Skye get along. I love Skye and Sunny’s relationship even more now and each time you show more they get even more delightful :D

lopoddity

Exactly! :) Offering food is universally a welcoming gesture for all animals, but among canines it's particularly familial in a "welcome to our pack" kinda way. Sunny and Skye are the ones who bought the tofu dogs, but Bud wigged out at them and tried to entice Skye into trying a bratwurst. Jude has never cooked a tofu dog in her life, but snuck and grilled one to perfection while Bud was distracted.

"Why are you looking at me like that? Does the idea of consuming the cooked connective tissue of human beings BOTHER you, liberal?" Attitudes toward meat consumption vary wildly. Many herbivores find it barbaric and unnecessary and campaign to outlaw it, feeling that predators can find reasonable protein alternatives in faux meat, nuts, and soy. Other herbivores find it ultimately harmless, a means of throwing carnivores a bone, so to speak, as many faux meats are bland and full of sodium. Some carnivores find it shameful and gross, while others are proud to eat meat, while others are neutral. Skye doesn't wanna eat that grilled casing of emulsified pork trimmings because she's reminded of her hog friends back home....but you also have the odd fact that some pig families, being omnivores, eat meat themselves, even pork. Tibbs is a pig that sometimes enjoys a side of bacon for breakfast, because what could be more metal than pseudo-cannibalism

I'm glad! :) I was actually pondering the mysterious girl next door. I figure she's a casual childhood friend of Sunny's, her name is Honey ("How perfect is she for ya, son? Your names even rhyme!"), and Sunny's parents think she's like, the perfect docile future wife for their son, but in reality she probably runs a floral business that is most definitely a front for growing/selling weed, plus she's a total freak party animal and 100% dumb dog. Her interactions with Sunny sound like Betty and Peter Parker in this vid: https://youtu.be/X0XiMOL6Y5c?t=161 Customs/social attitudes for eating real meat are as follows -While meat alternatives have been around for thousands of years, the advent of lab-grown real meat is relatively recent, having only existed for about twenty years. Despite this, the meat industry makes obscene profits and is perpetually marketing in the same sneaky, insidious manner as junk food and tobacco companies, usually advertising their product as an essential part of wholesome family dinners, advocating that meat helps young carnivore kids grow up strong and healthy, etc. It's quite common for meat companies to hire herbivore mascots to help push product and soothe the public's discomfort over eating flesh grown from people cells. It is not unusual to see a meat ad with say, a sexy lady antelope convincing a lion to try *company name*'s new n' tasty antelope burgers. Lots of herbivores HATE this, but the meat industry has it's claws buried well into federal government and is difficult to combat. Many herbivores find lab meat barbaric and unnecessary, and actively campaign to outlaw it. -Still, don't think that meat is universally hated by herbivores. Many are entirely apathetic to the issue, with some even finding the rise of the meat industry to be a net positive for the jobs it creates (besides factory jobs, herbivores can donate their cell samples to meat companies for money, the same way humans are paid for blood plasma donations. And some herbivores indeed aspire to be models/mascots for the meat industry, as said models are celebrities that make millions annually.) -It's considered very bad manners to eat meat in front of an herbivore. Some herbivores find it offensive and repulsive and may even consider it a threat against them. Some don't care. The general rule is never eat meat in front of an herbivore unless you know them very well. Many food courts/cafeterias/lunchrooms are separated for this reason, and lots of meat products come in discreet packaging. -In a similar vein, it's considered VERY rude for a predator to refer to a living prey animal by their "food" name, eg. calling a living cow a side of beef, calling a sheep "lambchop", etc. Naturally, predators do this when they want to be especially insulting (eg. "The only thing you're good for is food, you walking hunk of mutton!"). In an odd twist, however...meat-themed nicknames are common for pred/prey couples, for example "porkchop" is one of Perry's playful pet names for Tibbs. Many prey people find this objectifying, but some find it cute and thrilling to be addressed so by their predator partner, in an "They want to eat me but not in a bad way" sorta way -If the animal exists, then its meat can be grown in a lab. The most popular types of meat are staples like beef, pork, and chicken, but dingoes quite like the taste of kangaroo meat, fossa like lemur meat, etc, etc. -The meat industry has somewhat successfully connected their product to romance for carnivore couples, kinda like diamond companies in our world made shiny rocks a requirement for marriage. Couples are kinda expected to go out for a fancy meaty dinner to celebrate anniversaries, proposals, etc. Meat is tied to family, which is why Buddy is getting offended here.

I'm living for the Judith and Skye content

Robo87

Oh Jude. You angel. You perfect awkward girl. You sweetheart, you poor diaster lesbian. And honestly, same

Bigsmile

Tibbs eating bacon?..... Bro, that's metal as shit.... Y'know, I think Cupcake has competition for my favorite character now.

Bigsmile

So what's Biscut's reason for not liking Skye? Is she just a bit judgemental and classist while Skye is big time activist and not exactly "Lady like" and proper?

Biscuit

It scared me that this is exactly the way I imagined Honey. Suggestion to make her femme lesbian? :)

lopoddity

In Biscuit's opinion, there is no girl alive that could ever be good enough for her darling boy- but Skye is especially egregious. While Skye is polite enough and has decent manners, often her country upbringing shines through, and she's eager to do things like knock back beers with Jude or wrestle Sunny in a patch of mud. Skye is opinionated and will challenge Biscuit when she makes an offhandedly callous remark- which Biscuit finds quite rude. Little girls should be quiet when grown-ups are talking. Furthermore, Biscuit finds many of the social issues Skye cares about to be pretty pointless, or even made-up just for Skye to feel important. Hmph. On a subconscious level, Biscuit dislikes Skye for "stealing" Sunny away from her- seeing Skye love up on a happy Sunny is a rather sad reminder that her son is all grown up now and doesn't need her nearly as much. She misses back when he was her teeny-beanie pupcake, back when all it took to make him happy was Mummy coming home from work. Sigh... ...Much less sympathetically, Biscuit isn't too keen on Skye's mixed breed heritage. She wants cute fluffy golden grandpups that look like Sunny clones, not spotty splotchy country mutts that would just remind her of Skye.

Bigsmile

So what you're saying is....... Biscuit is a total nob that's sick of the peasantry

RagingRiptide

Considering how her parents feel about Skye I can only imagine how they felt about Virgil. Wonderful work as always, Skye has quickly become one of my favorites, she is so very lovable!!

lopoddity

Thanks so much! :D And yeah, Bud and Biscuit's first meeting with Virgil was....a mess. I'd like to illustrate that encounter as a comic like this one someday soon

WAr

Man I’m so stoked to hear more about Sunny’s parents and their relationship with Sunny/Skye/Bruce!! I figured they had to have been a little….toxic considering their treatment of Jude and Cas, with Sunny definitely being the golden child. I hope we get to see Honey sometime, I’m beyond loving the way you describe her! I could see Sunny and her fake dating during high school or something to get their parents off their backs, if her parents are also overbearing. Thank you for the breakdown on meat lore!! I know it was a lot to type but I really appreciate it! I’m fascinated by that aspect of their society and how they view it.

Imogen

Gosh I adore this, we need to see this mild mannered lab girl that lives up the street I’m curious

Paddiefrog

I have no idea why but I read all of Buddy's lines in my head in the voice of Dom DeLuise XD

Melody Williamson

On the meat issue - what is your ideal solution to the problem? Just curious your opinions and how you would like the matter to be addressed

lopoddity

I'm not sure I understand which problem you're referring to. Do you mean the subject of meat consumption? If so, I have no optimal solution to offer. Fuzzbutts is a flawed world, like our world. I choose to show you this world and its problems and leave it to y'all to form your own opinions.
