juuust in case the dialogue's tricky to read

Priscilla: Funny running into you, babe! *whispering* Hey, pretend to be my boyfriend real quick. I think that guy's been following me.

Bruce: Point him out. I'll bite his face.

Priscilla: No, no...Just keep walking...

I enjoy drawing all my characters, but lately I've been reluctant to draw Bruce. His wallaby Fuzzbutts self was just not working for me, and eventually I figured out why. He didn't feel like Bruce. Looking back I'm not really sure why I landed on "wallaby" for his design, besides the obvious Australian-ness and I guess I thought it'd be funny to subvert expectations with him and Stormy/Sunny, turning gentle Stormy into a predator and snarly Bruce into a prey animal. Eh. Bit lame in retrospect, innit

So I'm exploring changing Bruce from one marsupial into another, a tasmanian devil. Finally, he's the smelly toothy gremlin man he was always meant to be! His relationship with Priscilla is getting tweaked a bit too. Rather than first meeting each other at the boarding house, they met in their freshman year of college. They were dormmates~ And they fought. So. Much. But! They grew on each other in an exasperated kinda way, and managed to stay in touch as best friends that don't like admitting they're best friends. They have a ton of history between them- with Bruce knowing Priscilla throughout her transition, and Priscilla having blackmail evidence of that time Bruce thought he'd look cool with an emo fringe. Modern day Bruce is a doctoral student/adjunct professor at the very same zooniversity where he first met Pris, while Priscilla puts her business degree to good use running her salon.

As for what's happening here, well, Priscilla is a tiny lady cat, and, as in our world, tinyness and ladyness often catches the attention of creeps. She's gotten pretty good at looking out for herself (even taking small critter self-defense lessons at Logan's gym), but still, it's nice to have a friend to back you up on those sometimes-unnerving walks home.

This WORKS, dude. I'm all for you exploring it more, but I have to admit, a Tasmanian Devil feels like a great fit :)

Robo87

I looooove devil Bruce 😭❤❤ He's stinking adorable but he has that "tiny but WILL actually kill you" vibes that og Bruce had. You're right comparing this to wallaby-Bruce it feels like he was missing something Also it's even more amusing to picture Silver trying to get his baby brother in a head lock and suddenly the street is filled with *UNHOLY GUTTERAL SNARLS OF THE DAMNED* and Bruce has his jaw locked on his totally-not-squealing brother's arm

Robo87

And I am all FOR college adventures of Cilly and Brucie

VenUmbra_1177

As much as I loved him as a wallaby, tasmanian devil Bruce is the most perfect little gremlin man and I would die for him! I am curious to see what you'll do with Silver, do you plan on changing his species as well?

plutosongs

OOOO the bruce update works so well!! and these two and their friendship have always been fun to see eheh!!

lopoddity

dude you are PSYCHIC that's LITERALLY what i'm in the process of drawing right now!

lopoddity

Thanks! Nah, Silver stays the same, I really like his design. Also I think the new dynamic between the brothers will be fun to explore- predators are supposed to be ferocious and indomitable, but then you've this giant ass herbivore roo constantly dunking on his tiny snarly baby brother

WAr

I’m loving Tasmanian devil bruce! I didn’t think about it before too much, but you’re right that the wallaby Bruce was just missing something. I’m all for you exploring different animals for him but I definitely think this is a step in the right direction, if not the perfect animal for him! I can’t wait to see more exploration in the relationship between him and Priscilla in this universe!

Reaper

I love that he's a tasmanian devil 🥺 They're such adorable little creatures. I love them so much 😭

Rheanna

I love this version of Bruce! It absolutely has the same vibes as the og and I love it so much

Scyllarus

Oh no I love it I kinda feel like wallaby-Bruce was more...depressed? OG Pony-flavor Bruce had his moods but he was a cranky bastard first, sad second. Devil Bruce feels like a return to that and I am all for it!

Buttermaster

I wanna squeeze him and ignore as he tries to bite my hands off

lopoddity

Yes! That's definitely part of it. I think I added a bit too much sad-bastard to wallaby Bruce, which made him feel far too passive. I forgot that at his core, Bruce is extremely reactive. An angery snarly-snarly boi, no matter the form

Bruce's first choice when confronted with dirtbags is to do a violence....... I like it

TheTabbyBadger

Oh wow, this really does suit him! I did like wallaby Bruce but when I saw this pop up I even thought, Oh hey it’s Bruce! Before I realized the species swap 😅 Is he still into botany or is that changing up too?

lopoddity

well that first year it was mostly Priscilla trying to drag Bruce into playboy frat dude antics while in desperate denial that she was, in fact, a huge nerd. Picture Carlton from Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and that's pretty much college-age Priscilla

lopoddity

Thank you. :) He still likes plants and keeps several (and maintains the roof garden), but I'm changing his area of scientific study away from botany.

feathermaws

He gives me the vibe that he would be 100% down to throw hands for a stranger getting harassed if need.

Melody Williamson

Hes better as a Tasmanian devil. Is he going to be adopted now or will the mom be a Tasmanian devil and dad be kangaroo and they had 1 son of each species?

Angsty Ram

OH I JUST LOVE THIS BRUCEY 💕💕💕 To think when he was born he’d only be the size of a grain of rice 🥺 I wonder if more animals would be scared of Bruce due to his bite force… or just the horrific screams they can do?

Robo87

Also I may be getting some more hcs now about Bruce's and Silver's childhood ;) Im also very excited to see how Silas would look (if you keep him and Bruce the same species) I mean...like as tough as Bruce looks now I imagine his old man would take that to the next level. Silas looks like he could chew up a crocodile (and has probably tried). It's an interesting dyamic to his character as well, being a small but vicious critter, and how that now applies to his fucked up relationships with his sons

Robo87

P-please tell me she knows THE DANCE

Toadboss Ida

This makes so much more sense. I immediately recognised him as Bruce and it feels like Bruce is home 💕

lopoddity

His mom is the kangaroo, his dad was the wallaby, I suppose now I'll be changing the dad to a devil too~

lopoddity

Priscilla: Of course I know the hottest dances to do at the clubs tonight! >:3 also Priscilla: does THAT dance

Must Love Frogs

So, in the world of FB is there a universally-regarded dominant sex?

lopoddity

Hmm. Yes, but also no? Not universally. Gender dimorphism and behavior vary wildly across the animal kingdom, and the cultural gender expectations of different species are greatly informed by their biological imperatives and evolution. Domestic cats and dogs are notoriously egalitarian and play it fast and loose with gender roles. If a tomcat wants to be a housewife or a female dog wants to be president, they'll be met without so much as a second glance by the peers of their species. Other species like elephants and hyenas and meerkats are typically matriarchal, with the males expected to take on passive caregiving roles while the females are the leaders and breadwinners. And yet more species (eg. lions, deer, kangaroos) are distinctly patriarchal, with the dudes expected to be in charge. In many of these species, where the male is expected to be the one to pursue females/ compete with other males, there sometimes arises a cult of aggressive machismo, competitiveness, and idolizing of tough playboy figures. So if a dude is coming from a species where he was socialized to think males know better than females, and that men are supposed to be pushy in their pursuit of women, then you sometimes get a creep who won't take no for an answer. Or perhaps a creep that enjoys tailing a small woman walking alone because it makes him feel powerful. This isn't to say every critter is a slave to their biology and upbringing, of course. Or that patriarchal social systems are the only ones with problems. The people of FB are people, and they vary a lot in their approach to gender roles. Bruce for example was socialized by tasmanian devils (which emphasize ferocity and an everyone-for-yourself attitude) and kangaroos (which emphasize brute strength and male dominion), yet here he is, listening to Priscilla and doing whatever necessary to make her feel safe, even dropping his initial instinct to drive off the creep at her request.
