Just in case anybody missed it, I wrote a story for that one Mimi & Bruce scene from January: https://www.patreon.com/posts/60958066

Mimi saved the juiciest wood larva in her lunchbox for you, Bruce~

Bruce is an adjunct professor and doctoral student studying bio at Critter City Zooniversity. Mimi works as a librarian there, and is a doctoral student of primatology. Bruce would very much like their relationship to stay distant and strictly professional, but Mimi insists on Bruce joining her weird conspiracy podcast. She also may or may not be courting him, in her own unique, deranged way.

Do Tasmanian tigers eat bugs?

Dean

I love Mimi so much oh my lord. I also courted my current boyf with outlandish science and snacks <3

Does Bruce know they are courting ?

lopoddity

Yes, though mostly they eat carrion. At least, real life tasmanian devils eat carrion. Bruce here is civilized and prefers a nice sandwich to a rotten carcass, though like his irl counterpart, were he presented with a big tasty hunk of fresh meat, he could easily eat nearly half his body weight of it in one sitting. Eating bugs is looked down on in most developed nations in FB. It's seen as low class and gross, especially eating them alive and wriggling the way Mimi does. The stigma against insect eating is largely a byproduct of capitalism. Companies that produce fake meats and lab meats have a vested interest in getting customers to buy their products. Insects are cheap, healthy, and nutritious- which is exactly why meat corporations want animals to forget about bugs as a food option entirely. Noooo valued customer, don't farm mealworms in your own home for pennies, buy our tasty sodium n' nitrate-infused "Phony Baloney instead! ....Pretty please? Also, in FB, as in our world, a lot of people live pretty divorced from the fact that food sometimes takes the shape of living creatures. Like how, say, the little ham disks inside a child's lunchable are entirely removed from the reality of hog slaughterhouses, so you needn't ponder consuming the flesh of a living being while you have your snack. Eating a bug feels a bit too "real" for many animal folk. This being said, plenty of FB critters still stubbornly, loyally eat bugs. Priscilla secretly enjoys an occasional box of chocolate-dipped moths. Bruce would probably like (toasted and seasoned) larvae if he gave it a fair chance, he's just startled at his coworker shoving a live insect into his mouth.

Bruce has no idea she's trying to court him, he just thinks it's Mimi being her usual self, which is a nutcase. Mimi thinks she's being pretty obvious, surely any reasonable lemur would view her thoughtful tasty grub gifts as a flirty way of saying "baby, i might not be your bride, but i'll groom ya~"

lopoddity

Aye Aye Ay! You weren't supposed toooo

Who doesn't want crazy librarians shoving live insects into their mouth?

Must Love Frogs

I'm gonna draw this wacky microprimate. Consider it a threat.

lopoddity

Really he's lucky it was a nice grub and not, say, a giant cockroach. Cuz Mimi eats those too

I gots a dumb question about bugs, will FB have any slightly altered bug species that could fill the roll of pets? Like, instead of a housecat lion couple get a housecat sized poodle moth? Also, have you ever seen a poodle moth?!? They're cute enough to make me forget my phobia of bugs!

lopoddity

Please never call your question dumb. :3 I actually had that idea before, like giant lunar moths and big fuzzy caterpillars, but then I thought maybe it'd be a weird worldbuilding snag if insects were able to be domesticated into supersized pets, because the obvious step would be for the people of FB have also bred giant bugs to eat as livestock. Which would more or less solve the problem of meat eating in FB and erase all the social tension between preds and prey I like to explore. Hmm. I haven't set aside the possibility of superbugs yet, it just needs further thought!

Bigsmile

Oof, that's a tough decision. On one hand you have world consistency and the social tension integral to the story..... But on the other hand you got cat sized poodle moths. Whatever you go with has my vote of approval 😉
