'Nother scribble. Mama Strawberry and her potato pubbies~

Some of Skye's siblings have gotten name changes and design tweaks. Her sister Star is now named Summer. Her brother Scallywag is now named Snowball. Skye's family is overrun with shepherds and collies with merle-patterned (splotchy) coats. When two dogs with merle genes (like Skye's parents) interbreed, there's a chance of them producing a pup with a double merle mutation. Double merle puppies usually have white coats, and are sometimes born partially or completely deaf and/or blind. Snowball is deaf. Strawberry and her mate were unaware of this possibility (in fact the pregnancy was not at all planned), but Strawberry nonetheless throws herself into learning how to accommodate Snowball- and all her pups. She may not be very gentle or warm, but there is little Strawberry wouldn't do for those pudgy lil potats.

Must Love Frogs

1) PUPPPPPPIIIIEEEES 2) Are litters common in your 'verse? Does it have an effect on the population disparity? IE, are there way more rats than elephants running around?

Robo87

I can just hear their widdle squeaks 😭

Really loving snowball!! I hope we see more of them, and how they navigate life in fuzzbutts with no hearing! Hopefully this will help increase awareness about double Merles. I’ve worked at a shelter and it’s so sad how frequently people who don’t know what they’re doing breed two merle dogs together and then dump the blind and deaf ones.

Angsty Ram

I want to hug them all 🥺

Babie Skye: *squeaking and trying to nurse on her Ma's finger* Strawberry: Hnn. This is almost making me have an emotion. Get a job, hippie

I've been pondering the answer to this for a while. Litters are increasingly uncommon in FB. All species have been kinda collectively moving toward birthing one offspring at a time for many millions of years. As the people of FB evolved into, well, people, they gained intelligence (meaning bigger brains) and bipedalism (meaning narrower pelvises). It thus became biologically advantageous to not kill mom by making her push out several big-headed infants. Litter sizes shrank as civilization grew, until it became common to bear just one offspring, on average. This isn't to say litters are rare, however. They happen sometimes, especially in species known for huge litter sizes irl (eg. pigs, mice, etc). Everybody seems to know somebody's friend's cousin's dentist who had a healthy litter of thirteen. Thus far, however, Skye is the only member of the main cast to have been born in a litter. Sunny's parents wanted multiple pups and even paid for expensive fertility treatments, but only were ever able to have Sunny. Litters are higher risk pregnancies by default, and the birth is almost always preterm (again, to prevent killing mom). Skye and her siblings are premature here, her birth weight was much lower than Sunny's. Another factor in why litters are uncommon is because they're just really goddamn hard to care for. One baby is expensive, five can bankrupt a family. To prevent this, there are family planning clinics that can help prevent a couple having more children than they can care for- and the government also offers subsidies to parents attempting to raise a large litter (3 or more offspring). There's a lot of public resentment toward this social welfare, and litters have come to be associated with poverty and sexual promiscuity.

awww they're so cute. <3333 I volunteered at an animal shelter and got to hold a week old pup once. Pretty sure that experience can can melt even the coldest heart.

FancylionFarts

The pups are so cute and smol 🥺 I want an armful of them

FROSTBURNE

Soup is such a good name for a dog imo. it's actually not the first time I've heard of a dog with that name, but it's cute nonetheless

Speaking of emotions, I just adore Strawberry's expression here. Even if she's not the most touchy-feely person or knows how to express tenderness, you can still see such devotion in her eyes. "I made some really good things here" She'll still make sure to stash them away carefully in several of the cozy dens she had made throughout the house when she does chores

Soup was either named Sterling or Stella at birth, not sure which cuz I'm not super (souper?) sure what Soup's gender is anymore. Anyway, Soup rejected their birth name in favor of one they felt fit better.

DragonCookies

Lookit the widdle squishy beebssss 🥺

RagingRiptide

Snowball is so cute 😭 I can’t wait to see more of him!! I rescued a double Merle dog that looks similar to him, and he is the sweetest! He is also completely deaf!

Bigsmile

If it makes you feel better, my aunt exclusively rescues deaf dogs at shelters and they're all wonderful! They barks sound like someone is strangling a squeaky toy though.
