tw: discussion of weight and body issues

been feeling for a while something was missing from Marnie’s design….but last night the gremlin in my brain spoke onto me, “what if. what if bun is chub”, and voila

Marnie is soft and squishy and has a kinda fraught relationship with her body- on one hand, herbivores are supposed to be elegant and sleek…..but on the other hand, Marnie is a public school teacher and thus very, VERY often stressed, so she eats a lot for comfort (and also cuz, y’know, food tastes good). Marnie exists in a constant cycle of trying to practice consistent exercise vs wanting to eat an entire carrot cheesecake in her bathtub at 3am because her principal wrote a mean remark on her performance review. Sometimes she feels “I’m beautiful the way I am! >:3”, sometimes she feels “oh sweet tapdancing turnips I’m a BLOB that no one will ever love <O”. Hang in there, Marnie! You’re perfect the way you are~

No shade meant by this, but I think a lot of artists think of a very specific image when they draw a heavyset woman, often defaulting to a cartoonish “curvy” figure with big breasts and hips, topped off with a teeny waist. Never a double chin, never a stomach roll, never any stretch marks.  I’ve never been a fan of this because it feels fake, almost like people are afraid to draw actual fat characters. So it was important to show Marnie’s folds and gut and boobs that are affected by weight and gravity. Apologies if you liked her old look, please don’t take this as a dismissal of thin women. Sometimes characters just change~

the doodle in the corner is Marnie wearing a dress from a n Easter set of Calico Critters I bought yesterday <3 She’s one fancy bun!

As a plus sized woman, it’s nice to see some representation for us :) I was a fan of Marine already, but I really heavily relate to her now, lord have I struggled with my body throughout my life. Thank you

mirarevias

As someone who has this exact body type, this is bringing me to tears, she looks so real. I know exactly how she feels, too -- It's hard to love your body when the whole world hates it very loudly

LovelyScars5264

It's really nice to see a character look exactly like me body wise

pookaWOODS

I love this so much more! My fursona is a chunky bun with this exact build, so it's really cute to see another artist capture that well!

mailebird

And just when I thought I couldn't love Marnie even more you hit me with this.

GanashiAshaka

Just when I couldn't adore/relate to Marine enough, you made her my size and with blushing ears! <3

I would have thought that predators would be the ones with all the pressure to be thin or muscley as opposed to herbivores that need a big stomach for digestion. That being said, humans also need a belly for digestion and we have insane beauty standards.

lopoddity

Body standards vary across the species, but herbivores, particularly ungulates, face social pressure to be slender and doe-eyed and willowy and effortlessly beautiful. Lapine beauty standards tend to center on hares and jackrabbits, insisting on tall athletic bodies with long, strong legs....or rabbits are told they can be small and round, so long as they have that impossible hourglass figure I talked about in the post above (eg. fat distributed solely in the bosom and butt). Of course, what people personally find attractive often differs wildly from what they're told is attractive. Lots of bunnies adore their round bodies, and animals like cows and pigs are notorious for equating authentically beefy and/or plump bodies (ie. not sculpted or airbrushed) with sex appeal.

Soooo…question: how do privates work in your universe? Not to sound weird or anything but when you depict them nude or wearing certain clothes, does fluff account for boobs and whatnot? Or do they have their anatomically correct (I guess?) animal parts? TL;DR: Anthro or Furry? What flavor of Furry are you?

FancylionFarts

It fits her so well ! Cute lil bunny 🐇, she looks like one of my favorite stuffed bunnies growing up!

Imogen

yESSSSS i LOVE this change, and you are so right about the depiction of larger fem aligned characters its so wonderful to see someone portraying them like this, like this is my shape im so happy to see it waaa <3

lopoddity

Good question! Character designs in FB are meant to lean very animalistic, less like a typical anthro design and more like a real life animal decided to stand on two legs and wear clothes. They are meant to have arms and legs that are about the same size, and the mammals are not meant to have visible breast tissue unless they are pregnant or nursing. I'm breaking my own rules with Marnie here, she has boobs, she has humanoid legs, she has prominent shoulders with a collarbone (I usually leave that out to help the fuzzyfolk look more animalistic), she has a humanoid distribution of body fat. Basically the characters of FB are little creechers, unless I'm drawing something fanservicey or just practicing my figure drawing. In those cases, they appear more humanoid, I draw them with boobs instead of their usual ambiguous chest fluff, etc. If I were to draw a FB character nude and fully "anatomically correct", to put it politely, they would have privates like a human's. Just like Marnie here has humanoid breasts, not a set of teats like an irl rabbit.

Brook

She’s perfect and soft and I love her snowball would treat her so right plzzzz 🏳️‍🌈😭💕✨

Cam

I think this might be the first time I’ve seen you draw my body type and it not be a mom. Im sure you have before but it makes me happy when I see characters like me I guess

PrincessMuffinArt

I love seeing more plus size characters (that arent played as a joke or one note character)! She’s beautiful! :)

LezzyBug

Aaaaa why is Marnie me though (I also have that struggle of one day being okay with my chubby self and then the next "oh god I need to lose some weight" Also I absolutely ADORE chubby Marnie and her lil dress! 💜

Toadboss Ida

Female bunnies tend to have dewlaps. Especially chubbier ones. Maybe thats an angel if you would go for a more animalistic look in a future drawing? No Critique, just a thought. I’m really happy to see Marnie look like me.I also have a hourglass body with broad shoulders, big hips but no waist,

lopoddity

Thank you for the info! I'm not sure why I thought dewlaps were exclusive to male bunnies. :/ I may very well incorporate a dewlap into Marnie's design. :3

lopoddity

Ah, I am pretty guilty of spamming mom bods. I could've sworn I had more young not-mom fat characters, but on reflection the only ones that come to mind are FB Cupcake, Gigi, Belle Velour, Cuppa Joe, Snowball, and Teddy. Hmmm I should fix that

Robo87

She is LOVELY and adorable. I LOVE the chub Yeah tbh when I see some “plus sized” character designs with that body shape it very much reminds me of that one gross expression “curvy in all the right places”. Remember, fat is only sexy on a woman’s body if it’s her tits or ass! Really brings back those brony incels that would LOSE THEIR MINDS if anthro/human Fluttershy wasn’t drawn STACKED AF with an itty bitty waist.

DragonCookies

I’m among the folks with a body type much like hers! I love how you drew her!! And yes I’m in total agreement that the internet really likes to conflate “chubby” with “curvy” (aka usually just large boobs and wide hips), so it’s always lovely to see what actual curves and chub tend to look like

Cerulean

I'm in THE same boat as Marnie; I'm chubby as well and I have a hard time with the inner feelings of thinking I'm "unattractive" because of it. Losing weight is a hard journey because I too, enjoy snacks like cakes and whatnot.

Gleeman and Artist

Realistically chubby characters, we love to see it! Is there a version of Easter in the FB universe? Is it religious to some and just a fun spring holiday to others?

lopoddity

Yes! Well, kinda. I’m still working on the name, but our fuzzfolk absolutely have an Easter-like celebration in the springtime. For many small woodland mammals (especially rabbits) springtime is borderline sacred. For now I’m thinking legends say ancient rabbits would endure the cold and hunger of winter cooped up miserably inside their warrens (underground villages). However the arrival of spring meant rabbits could finally emerge from the dark and feel the warmth and light of the sun once more, and take in (and eat) all the newly replenished greenery. Rabbits also tend to bear their young in the spring, so the season is doubly cherished. There may be a religious component as well, but I’m still brainstorming. Spring celebrations tend to involve a LOT of food and drink (not uncommon for bunnies to eat themselves into a stupor), showing off freshly tailored fancy clothes, music, and competitive sparring and foot races (to figuratively “stretch the muscles” after a long warren winter), dancing (irl rabbits sometimes perform a sort of courtship “dance” that involves hopping, chasing, dashing, and boxing, I imagine amorous FB bunnies get up to something similar.)

Stina Matrix

Oh my god, she looks so much like me! I feel her so hard! She's adorable!

lopoddity

Not at all~ I just like drawing tiddies sometimes

Marta Tarasiuk

As a proud parent of three bunnies, I can confirm. Bun-babies are indeed chubby.
