considering making Mimi Odd’s eccentric microprimate mother. He seems to have inherited her love for research annd eating live wriggling grubs, as well as her deeply unnerving stare. In the words of Finn, “You’re makin’ a looooot of eye contact there, bud….”

I LOVE this. They also genuinely look related! The idea of Mimi having a binturong child is also just too cool to pass up!!

So Odd's dad is a Bearcat? I'd also imagine he stares a lot without realizing he's doing it. Like if he's in a store or somewhere fascinated by something.

lopoddity

Oh yes. He also stares at Finn sometimes and slow-blinks, like a housecat. Yep! His dad would’ve been a bearcat. A dashing rogue that stole Mimi’s heart, and also her wallet

Azure-Art-Wave

Oooh it gets me to wonder what kind of dynamic this would play. Would Mimi be a single mom? Or is the partner still around? What would be the circumstances of Odd's birth? I'm really curious to know what Mimi as a mom would be like.

Bruce: THERE’S TWO OF ‘EM!!!??

Ren

If you wanted to tie in Penny I can see them being a distant cousin of Mimi and thus making it their job to be the “cool” (auncle?) to Odd. Many attempts at misadventures to be had.

PrairieGhosted

does Odd also smell like buttered popcorn like most biruntong ? :0

Robo87

….if we play our cards right, Bruce COULD become Oddball’s stepfather….oh the chaos potential

lopoddity

Penny is Mimi's cousin! Penn's mom is Mimi's aunt. This would make Odd Penny's younger cousin, but she'd definitely insist on calling him her nephew

lopoddity

The popcorn smell comes from a compound in their urine, so.... hopefully not, lol

lopoddity

Why do you think Mimi flirts with him so much? XD Boy needs a daddy! Odd probably ends up Bruce's teaching assistant and is the opposite of chaos, neatly organizing the absolute mess that is Bruce's office (which makes him a snarly angy boi indeed)

PrairieGhosted

LOL THATS SO FAIR , no popcorn musk for this lad

I'm curious, how old are Mimi and Odd respectively? I assumed characters like Mimi, Bruce, and Sunny were only roughly a decade older than characters like Katie, Odd, and Cass. (Also, as usual, I love all the art you've been putting out and these new character designs!)

lopoddity

You're right on the money! :3 I did originally have the main cast all be in their early to mid thirties, while the college kids (Katie, Brooke, Cass, Odd, Finn) are in their early twenties. Bruce and Skye are both 30, Sunny is 29. Mimi was always a bit older than Bruce, around 36, but I have to age her up if she's gonna be Odd's mom. If Odd is 22-23, then Mimi would be 46-47 years old, having had him in her last year of undergrad.

Bigsmile

OHHHHH! Bearcats are not actually the size of bears! I was very confused for a minute and concerned for Mimi. I guess this means Finn isn't a giant Lizard like komodo dragons..... Man, I don't know shit bout animals lol

Bigsmile

But is she problematic? That's the Lop brand 😉

lopoddity

Yup, Mimi’s a single mom. (Single and ready to mingle, as she’d like to remind Bruce). I’m thinking she got pregnant sometime in her last year of undergrad, to her immense frustration and surprise. Mimi had zero interest in procreating. What Mimi cared about was research. Hurt by her partner’s abandonment (yet another person that found Mimi to be “too much”), she was ready to erase this chapter of her life and forget about people all together, instead moving on to pursue her doctorate. At first she thinks to terminate the pregnancy, but eventually her curiosity gets the better of her. This infant will make a fascinating case for study. What would a binturong cub raised by an aye-aye look like? Would it come to mirror her own microprimate behaviors and quirks, or would it maintain intrinsic social and emotional characteristics of it’s own species? Mimi decides to write her Master’s thesis on Odd, who will surely have interesting implications for children raised by parents of different species (the sociology behind interspecies reproduction was a bit of a hot button topic in academics at the time- and still is). Mimi is a weird mom. She’s bubbly and nice enough, sure. But she’s also flighty, scatterbrained, and extremely distractible. She also had trouble showing interest in typical mommy-child activities like coloring and inane cartoons. Instead she shoved all her interests on to Odd, reading him dense research papers as bedtime stories, taking him to museums and seminars (and expecting him to take notes), providing him with “toys” (junk electronics and bits of tech for him to disassemble and reassemble), feeding him a steady diet of fruit and bugs. This might’ve had a negative impact on a typical child, but Odd was mercifully not a typical child. He was intelligent and independent from a very young age. He shared Mimi’s love for wood grubs, for equipment repair, for climbing trees, for reading scientific journals for fun. He ends up being the one to parent Mimi sometimes, packing her lunches and tossing a blanket over her when she falls asleep at her desk for the umpteenth time. Odd and Mimi have a solid bond, they just “get” each other. Both of them are autistic, so both of them are used to having to “act normal” in social spaces, either minimizing aspects of their personality (Mimi has to stifle her excited ramblings among her peers if she wants to be taken seriously by them) or exaggerating aspects (Odd knows to force small talk so he won’t be seen as aloof or rude) so people won’t write them off as…well, odd. But around each other, the mask can drop, Mimi can chatter happily about new discoveries to her heart’s content around Odd and he’ll listen, quiet but nonetheless enraptured. Odd in turn knows he can spend hours peacefully reading or working quietly in his study without his mother assuming he’s being avoidant and asocial. Mimi feels like “home” to Odd. They’re family, but also friends! (Odd is not very expressive by nature, but a quick way to get him snarling is to say something unkind about Mimi.)

PD19

is this oddball a reference to the pandoraverse oddball?

Haselwoelfchen

Her stare is unnerving, but her smile is warm.

Non-Euclidean Cat

Would Mimi still crush on Bruce? Rather than a MILF situation more like a "Mother I'd like to Avoid like the Plague." situation for him. :)

lopoddity

Mimi has always been a mother Bruce would like to avoid, but that's because of her general Mimi-ness, not her age. Bruce is 30, Mimi's in her forties. She does still have a bit of a crush on Bruce, but it's half-hearted. She flirts more to get a reaction from him, she doesn't really expect them to date.

gamigami

i love this new development... im curious, did mimi have trouble carrying Odd? aye-ayes grow up to 12-16 inches, meanwhile bearcats grow up to 38, and i know you mentioned before that mixed couples have to be wary of size differences when reproducing. is this one of those cases, or is it not a very drastic enough size difference to matter, vs if it was like a shark and a seal or a chipmunk and a giraffe? (im sorry for that imagery)

lopoddity

Not really, actually! Infant binturongs can be more than twice the size of infant aye-ayes, but many animals are "stretchy", so to speak. The uterus can expand to a pretty extreme size, similarly to human women who carry triplets, quadruplets, etc. Still, pregnancies of this nature are inherently high risk, as both uterus and mother have a capacity limit for the fetus's weight and volume. There's usually a point in the fetus' development where it's size will trigger the body to go into labor....whether the fetus is ready to leave the womb or not. Doctors monitored Mimi closely and rather than risk Odd's rapid growth harming Mimi, they induced her labor early. This is standard for parents of larger offspring. Odd had to finish developing in an incubator, Mimi sat with him for weeks taking notes and sketching him.

Curious Do you ever plan on going back to the mlp pandoraverse thing? I like the art of the new current thing you’re doing cause you have quite the affinity of drawing animals Hope this doesn’t offend you or irritate you in anyway cause I’ve seen some people get snapped at :”) I just wanna enjoy art as a humble patron my friend

lopoddity

I'm glad you're enjoying my animal art, and I'm happy to have you as a patron. :) I may draw the occasional bit of MLP/pandoraverse content every once in a while, but I can't say I'm all that interested in it anymore. I did draw art and write stories for it for a solid 7-8 years, after so long you just kinda start running out of ideas. :/ I wouldn't say I'll never draw pony stuff again (because of course I will, the mood does still strike sometimes, just not so often as it used to), but for the most part my Patreon is focused on Fuzzbutts and non-mlp doodles.

Phat Cat Jess

That’s understandable lopoditty, but even if you can’t pick it up, it’s had such a good run and I’m happy I found your art the way I did :”) I hope you have a good summer!

lopoddity

I'm glad too, and you as well! Grateful to have your support. ❤️ In truth, I have been feeling nostalgic over the ponies for a while now. I hope to turn out a doodle or two during my summer break~
