very slow day at work today so i kinda made a loooooot of ballpoint pen doodles. gonna clean and color all of them, but for now have a sample!

Perry is about 15 years old here. Young Perry was quite a little wilderness explorer, spending hours and hours poking around in the woods around his home, catching trout in the river, collecting burrs and ticks in his fur, climbing trees, pointedly avoiding his parents, and reading in the shade. All of this upset his mother Liv, but Perry has been upsetting Liv since the day he was born. Liv maintains a very rigid idea of what her child should be, and never wastes an opportunity to exert control over her wayward "daughter". For example, refusing to let Perry cut his long hair ("Why are you trying so hard to break your mother's heart?"). If casually eroding a child's self-esteem were an Olympic sport, Liv would be a gold medalist. Veiled criticism, open criticism, absolutely terrifying hissing fits of rage behind closed doors- Liv's got it all in spades. You're welcome, dear.

Interesting to see the different receptions to trans kids in feline words with Priscilla and Perry! I wonder if they’ve ever met. You may have already said this before, but when/where did Perry learn about the concept of transgender? I don’t imagine his parents told him!

Oh this one hits home hard 🥺 poor Perry

Is there a time where Perry is secure in his masculinity to try long hair again, like a man-bun (or just bun, I guess) before ultimately, deciding that it wasn’t his thing keeping his hair short? Or did Liv get on his nerves so damn bad about long hair that he just never go without it short?

Excellent question! I think I might answer it in doodle form. ;) For now…yep, Liv definitely tried to shield Perry from what she considered “degeneracy” as he was growing up. Perry was a sheltered kid attending private school with a mother who made sure to screen and approve/veto any friends he made, soooo yeah. Perry only had a vague, uninformed idea of what transgender meant (he thought it was crossdressing), but has always known he was queer. He just didn’t have the specifics of it figured out. In college, away from Liv, he immediately seeks out the queer scene and makes loads of friends, finally happy for the first time in his life. He decides he must be a butch lesbian, and tries out dating girls for a while. It’s an awkward and confusing time for him, and it’s actually his first college girlfriend that encourages him to keep trying out different labels (and talking to different people) to see what feels right. Eventually Perry discovers he’s trans (and also very, very gay) and dives headfirst into transitioning. At first he tries to be very typically gruff and macho, but gives that up quickly to just be himself. The older Perry gets, the more comfortable he grows with his identity (that is to say, a Hawaiian shirt-wearing, mimosa-sipping, flamboyant and half-feral little gremlin)

Yes! Perry learns he doesn’t actually mind long hair, so long as it’s on his terms. You can see in the post where he first meets Tibbs, his hair is long. He cuts it fairly regularly but will sometimes grow it out when he feels like it (also cuz Tibbs really likes it). Perry will also discover he likes to cross dress sometimes, lounging around his house in a dress or sometimes putting on makeup when he wants to feel fancy. Wearing a frilly dress his mother picked out felt like torture, but wearing one HE chose feels liberating and comfy.

I love the way you write your characters, Lop. The stories are so relatable, and unique to each character based on their species and upbringing. It's honestly a lot of fun to read :)

Does Perry still like running around the woods as an adult? :D

I can sympathize with Perry. My mother when i was growing up would never let me cut my hair short. Like I was a girl who rather be getting filthy in the creek with my brothers. Making mud pies, turning over rocks, and watching animals. Luckily my mom's settled down a bit and has finally realized her daughter can still be outdoorsy and feminine.

lopoddity

Yup! Present day Perry is in his mid thirties and he is still very active, often climbing trees, collecting river rocks, hiking, fishing, and making Andy Goldsworthy-style nature sculptures in the woods. He's pretty grateful Tibbs enjoys camping with him and is not afraid of getting muddy or eating berries they collect.

Mom and I just had a conversation about how I wasn't girly at all the other day, so I feel Perry. I also happen to be a transman, so Perry and I both had the tomboy to transman pipeline lol.

I find it interesting that we haven't seen Liv's color palette yet, unless she really is as monochromatic as her attitude aye yooooo

lopoddity

Nah Liv isn't monochromatic. Color palettes take me a while to figure out, and when I rush them I'm usually unsatisfied (which is why my characters get redesigned and tweaked fairly frequently). I haven't had the time to figure out Liv's palette, so for now she gets left like this. I imagine she's a sort of stark reddish brown, while Perry's father is a washed-out grey.

This got me curious about one thing: how does the make-up in the FB world works? I guess the furry animals need some special concoctions for it to stick to them properly and stay looking nice even when their facial fur is very short and smooth. (Also ticks?! Poor Petry! Ticks are the worst! Bet his mother flipped her lid when she found some huge, gorged bastard in his fur.)
