the girls are flirtinggg

Honey and Summer are diametrically opposed people. They stand at odds in their politics, in personal values, on ideas of femininity, on acceptable pizza toppings. And yet. They’re drawn to one another.

Honey fits the bill for the stereotypical “useless lesbian”, as she is easily flustered and awkward about approaching pretty girls. She’s also, y’know, kinda horrible. In Honey’s own words, she has trouble shutting up when she’s nervous, meaning any attempts to be flirty and charming inevitably disintegrate into Honey launching into a lengthy diatribe about the collapse of traditional values. This doesn’t do her many favors with the local lesbian scene. Even if Honey could manage to act like a decent human being in front of a girl, she is deeply sexually repressed and afraid of intimacy, often citing a virginity pledge she took as a teen. At the end of the day Honey gets to feel like a pillar of conservative sensibilities in a sea of degeneracy, but she remains deeply, deeply frustrated….and, well, lonely.

Through her political rival Skye, Honey meets Summer.

Summer is a phys ed teacher, a trans lesbian, and the daughter of a blue collar family- all demographics that have historically been hammered down on by conservatives. Summer must therefore be much more politically aware than she’d like to be. She differs from her dear baby sister Skye, however. Summer doesn't really believe in what she calls "sitting around wringing her hands" and blogging about the problems of their world. Summer believes in direct action. Summer has been arrested a few times for civil disobedience. Skye writes precision-strike take-down pieces, Summer throws bricks through windows. Skye interviews families affected by corporate pollution, Summer and her gal pals go to town meetings and demand the local leaders drink the sludgy polluted tap-water they insist is so safe for everyone else to drink. Skye organizes protests, Summer leads strikes. Their approaches are both important, just different- but both sisters take issue with how the other engages politically.

Romantically/sexually speaking, Skye is entirely repulsed by Honey because Skye's feelings of attraction toward others are always partly informed by the person's core values. Summer, however, is considerably less noble. While she would definitely not want to date Honey (at least not Honey in her current mindset), she would absolutely screw her just for the fun of it. She just finds Honey kinda cute, in a pathetic sorta way. Summer would welcome the challenge of ruffling Honey, of making her lose her composure, of cracking her open to reveal all those oh-so mortal flaws and hypocrisies and wants and needs. Does Honey also want that? Hmmm.

….yes. Honey wants that dumb jock dog to a degree that terrifies her. basically:

Honey: You should be addicted to shutting your mouth! >:O

Summer: You wanna fuck me so bad it makes you look stupid

Oh yes for the love of god YES. I was about to ask if honey had ever been involved with a girl even if it was secretly or something. Also, a useless gay with a fear of intimacy... Bro I did not need to be called out like that. Too relatable.

Azure-Art-Wave

Also is that something sIMILAR of a lesbian flag I see Honey??? 🤨🤨🤨🤨🤨

lopoddity

It’s a poster for a neoconservative lesbian group Honey’s trying to get off the ground. It’s not going well!

mirarevias

I wonder if the lesbian flag colors on Honey's sign are meant to be satirical on her part, or yours 🤭 Curious about the CSC too, which assumedly of course Honey is part of -- Is it something similar to the LGB alliance (ick), or is it more like a general conservative group that she feels safe to hide in the closet in, since she is a closeted lesbian conservative, iirc? Also the "behold Summer's mullet" tag has me in stitches, listen, mullets are making a comeback and the ladies look hmm... Very nice with them 🥴 I'm also feeling called out about being a useless sapphic, but at least I'm not as atrocious as Honey 🙈

mirarevias

WAIT NVM I see your response, so by this point she IS out and trying to get a conservative lesbian group up and out, yikes girl 💀

RagingRiptide

Summer makes my trans heart so happy and I love the way you draw her!!

Bigsmile

Man, Honey is just so damn hateable, but I kinda like her? Maybe my brain is mistaking pity and likability. Empathy and sympathy are weird and dumb sometimes. Also, Summer is cool, she's belligerent for righteousness..... EDIT: Wait, what are their preferred pizza toppings? This may change everything

Bigsmile

Jesus Christ, that's the saddest shit ever

lopoddity

I figured Honey’s group (of which she is currently the only member), is a sort of like a “Rainbow Republicans” queer-friendly (but not TOO queer) coalition that would champion conservative sensibilities, ie. the pursuit of capital with zero oversight or regulation. Oh, and an emphasis on modesty, traditional gender roles, and probably, I dunno, square dancing. Honey’s pretty frustrated she can’t seem to recruit any members (the only folk that wish to join are very much not queer-friendly). She baked a whole tray of lemon bars in anticipation. :(

lopoddity

I’m glad! I’m very much trying to walk a tightrope between keeping her both detestable, but also kinda likeable….or at least interesting to read about. She’s just a dumb kid. Honey likes barbecue sauce, onions, and kale on her pizza, Summer likes anchovies. They’re both fucking freaks

Bigsmile

Once again, I am betrayed and saddened 😔

AsTheJayFlies

I like domino’s memphis chicken pizza with barbecue sauce and onions, but KALE??? WHY

AsTheJayFlies

I was just wondering what honey and summer would think of each other! and summer’s political activism being a different flavor than skye’s is a great way to bring back the conflict from when she was still star the celebrity manager. man summer is so cool id love to hang out w her (even if she does like anchovy pizza. ew.)

Ngl, Honey is rapidly becoming my favorite character. It's like, she's so morally reprehensible that it's endearing? No idea how that even works; your character-developing skills are amazing. Every new thing we learn about her just paints this pathetic picture that's both hilarious and sad. I can't get over the mental image of her sitting alone with an uneaten tray of lemon bars, perplexed as to why no one wants to join her leopards-eating-faces club (except leopards.)

lopoddity

Thank you!! I’m so happy to hear it! <3

So, one thing that I don't get - is how is Honey supposed to like...exist as a conservative Lesbian? Would she marry a male just for the sake of being conservative, how would that work? I'm genuinely curious, I've never met such a paradox of a character before and its so interesting to see

lopoddity

To answer this, we can examine real life openly queer social conservatives, or women that align themselves with a misogynist political party, or minorities that prop up racist institutions. Much like these people, (assuming Honey stays on her current trajectory) Honey would try to have her cake and eat it too. She would try to exist as an out lesbian, while simultaneously contorting and minimizing herself to appeal to a group that will continue to hate her no matter how modestly she dresses or distances herself from other queer folk or desperately, desperately tries to prove she's "one of the good ones". I've watched a transgender conservative sit by as her colleagues insulted her existence to her face, misgendered her, called her a degenerate. Yet she doggedly remains aligned with her hateful party, because it allows her to help enforce the unjust social hierarchies she believes in. It doesn't matter if other trans folk get hurt, so long as she's allowed to keep her seat at the table. It'd be pitiable if it weren't so pathetic. Honey is still in denial that people could hate her for being gay, she hopes to convince them that she's still a good girl. She will never succeed. I hope it's clear that I'm not planning on keeping Honey the way she is. I believe anyone can change for the better. For Honey, it will be a trying and painful process, but she WILL change.

Curio Blue

This is such an interesting concept, I've never actually met a conservative queer person - like I know they exist of course, but I've just never met one. I'm invested in Honey as a character, I think she's complex and interesting, and so looking forward to more story!

DamnitDinkles

Summers mullet keeps screaming that one bluey scene at me and all I can picture is; Honey: You got a mullet!!! Summer: SHE SAID THEY WERE BACK IN! (posted original comments on mobile and couldn't shift+enter to include it on in this comment, just edited to add while I'm on pc)

DamnitDinkles

Summer: SHE SAID THEY WERE BACK IN

Marta Tarasiuk

I'm ready to bet that once Honey gets her degree, all the conservative animals she hands around will start asking her about getting married and popping out babies. She finished her education and women shouldn't prioritize having a job, so chop-chop baby pop-pop.

Melody Williamson

"Even if Honey could manage to act like a decent human being" don't you mean canine being? 🤭

knickknacks

ooooh my goodness more Summer/Honey interactions.. good good good. I love the tension (in every way possible <3) these two have with each other! If Sunny and Honey are childhood friends(or at least. were neighbors as young adults?), presumably not((?) living in the same area as Skye's family, what circumstances would they meet under? Summer attending some sort of protest or strike in Honey's area, or vice versa? Do you have thoughts on how far apart they live? This isn't a super character-oriented question but I am a bit curious hahah

DragonCookies

We love ourselves a true disaster lesbian honestly, it’s fun to see Honey’s worldviews consistently get chipped away at as she realizes she’s gonna have to pick a side eventually. Also, I’m genuinely curious, what is Honey’s general stance on transgender rights? And does her stance affect how she feels about Summer in any way?

lopoddity

Good question! I really do need to make a map of the FB world one of these days. Basically it’s a copy of America, except it’s not. It’s smaller, cities are closer together, there are no fifty states, and there’s actually a decent railway system so travel is easier. The cities are very much like they are in Equestria, being either entirely fictional locations or punny named versions of existing US cities. Skye and her family are from Dogdale, a city located within mountainous west not-quite-Montana. Sunny and Honey are from the wealthy suburbs of not-Wisconsin. Both Skye and Sunny (and most of the cast) presently live in the sprawling and vast Critter City, where Honey happens to be pursuing her degree. How she and they and Summer collide……Iiiiiii still have to figure that out, sorry. I had the idea that Honey tags along on a trip with Sunny and Skye to Dogdale so she can interview “hardworking real salt of the earth farmers”, and that’s how she meets Summer for the first time.

lopoddity

This is a good question with a complex answer. I hope to draw it eventually. For now….yeah, I’m not even gonna pretend Honey wouldn’t be a transphobe. But she’s transphobic in a different way than we usually see in our world. It’s more “innocent”, not so much hateful as it is incredibly patronizing and dismissive. Honey‘s upbringing emphasized clear cut gender roles and expectations, so to her the idea of someone transitioning their gender is as impossible as a rock becoming a fish. Men and women are simply different, almost like two separate species, existing in a divide that cannot be crossed. Honey was raised to believe trans people were delusional and spitting in the face of the divine plan, but she never fully internalized this because of her. Well. Curiosity. Honey is fascinated by ALL types of queerness, being gay herself (and forced to be stealth about it), she is painfully interested in people who fly against societal expectations, which include trans folk. She would definitely be dismissive and insufferable to a trans person if she met one, buuuut were they to talk of their experiences (and not just rightfully tell Honey to fuck off), Honey’s own feelings of loneliness and isolation would very quickly punch the first hole in her bigoted assumptions, because “oh, this person is just like me”. Honey is an ignorant transphobe, but she is also well,…. a dog, and eventually the need to pack-bond will win out.

DragonCookies

Thank you for the reply! I love how complex Honey is, and how much people (myself included) are interested in her personal growth despite all her current flaws. It’s no easy feat to write a character like that.

lopoddity

Thank you!! ❤️🧡💛💚💙💜

Skye: you are absolutely NOT tagging along to visit my family, I- *a pause, wherein she gleefully envisions how out of her depth Honey will be* -actually, I take that back. welcome aboard! I'm sure my family will be ~delighted~ to meet you.

shisokuu

Summer is super cool! Both of them actually. Their designs and characters are sooo creative - love it! I'm just wondering (since you also drew Summer with blue eyes a few times) which eye color she has? Or if you aren't sure yet, because honestly...I like both options. :D Although the green eyes really suit her.

lopoddity

I flip-flopped for a while, but I think I’ll go with green. :3

Res Hound

I really love that Honey, despite having obviously problematic world views, isn't a villain or one sided.
