featuring Angel, Carmen, and their daughter Primroooose

A long time ago, when their daughter was still a newborn, money became very hard to come by for Carmen and Angel. The healthcare system didn’t look too mercifully on a sickly disabled infant in need of many medical procedures, nor on her working class parents. Worse yet, Carmen was still recovering from the rough birth and unable to work much. To help fund his daughter’s medical care, Angel secretly did what many poor canines do. He turned to bloodsport. Underground dogfighting.

All behind Carmen’s back, of course….she had enough to worry about already. At first Angel only bets on matches, but growing increasingly desperate, he decides to step into the ring himself. Quick, low stakes matches at first. He trains for them in secret. It won’t do for him to come home battered and bruised- he sets out to inflict far more damage than he takes in.

Over time, he gets good at it. Very good at it. Everything begins to escalate- the size of his opponents, the money riding on the fights, the stakes. Angel becomes something of an underground legend…and he gets his name. The Angel of Death.

Carmen isn’t stupid, she knows something is going on. But Angel is so evasive to her questioning, on what exactly goes on at his “night shifts”, and they need the money so badly. She forces herself to have faith in him, to trust that he knows what he’s doing.

She's rocked to her core the night police bust a local dogfighting ring- and Angel, her husband, her best friend since childhood, is arrested.

Angel goes to prison for a long time. Carmen is left to pick up the pieces- left to raise Primrose alone. She has never, never forgiven Angel for this.

Not for forcing her to watch the father of her child be sentenced to prison….not for making her raise Primrose alone while she struggled to earn her degree. For the lies, for the secret cruelty, for shattering her trust, for missing so much of their daughter's childhood. Carmen hates Angel for a lot of things, and one thing she especially hates him for is coming back.

She hates his stupid, one-eyed face that gazes at her so sadly….his painfully earnest, awkward attempts to reconnect with Primrose….but most of all, she hates herself for still loving him. Because sometimes, when he makes her laugh, things almost feel the way they used to be. When she sees that Prim has, in a total brat move, superglued a googly-eye to Angel's eyepatch, and he amusedly wears it anyway while Prim huffs in the background- it almost feels like they could be a family again, maybe. When Angel speaks to her in a low voice and puts a deceptively-innocent hand on her knee, she still feels an involuntary little shiver before she thinks to push him away. Proximity is tortuous to both of them, but they can't avoid each other totally, as they share custody of Primrose. No matter what, Carmen cannot bring herself to deprive her daughter of her father, even if Primrose (who considers her dad a particularly annoying semi-stranger) doesn’t often appreciate the sentiment.

And so, Carmen and Angel keep drifting back together….and jerking back apart. It’s a very familiar song and dance….but it doesn’t mean Carmen isn’t allowed to vent her frustrations every once in a while.

~~~~~~~Carmen is tol, Angel is smol. Love the idea of her sometimes getting so mad she shakes him around like a baby rattle. Angel’s pretty into it. Primrose was staying at a friend’s house during Angel’s scheduled visit, so he sits down for a civil cup of coffee with Carmen, and stuff ends up happening between them because of course it does, their interactions are like 60% antagonistic sexual tension. Carmen’s pretty peeved this keeps happening.
I was originally holding off on revealing Angel’s sketchy past cuz i wanted to build up the mystery, buuuut i’m pretty strapped for time these days so i figure there’s no harm giving y'all a little taste. >:3 Despite his grim dogfighting moniker, and for as gruesome as bloodsport can be, Angel has never actually killed anyone……..probably
I wanted to request more primrose content but wasnt sure what exactly I wanted! Just seeing her brightens my heart! She was my favorite filly and now my favorite little pup! Would love to see more of her social life! Is she active in school clubs? Does she have some hobbies? Or any fun memories of her dad that she hates to look so fondly on? Also maybe Im projecting but she looks like a Thomas the tank engine child
YEEEES PRIMROOOOSE
Queenie
I'm so unbelievably excited to see more of her in the future. Either of HER in the future or in general, I want to know more about her and how she feels about her dad in more detail and her condition and UGH
I was not expecting to find myself rooting for these idiots to come back together, but I'm discovering that I'm weak for: 1. Idiots who break bad for their families 2. My boy stanning for strong wife (and being shaken like a maraca) 3. Good dad doggos 4. Get you a partner who looks at you with the sort of gentle tenderness that Angel looks at his family with I know Angel definitely still has his paws in some concerning stuff, but I want to just...slam these kids in a therapist's office and make them work through their issues. I want redemption (or resolution) dammit >:c Aside from that - I would love to see more Primrose dynamics! She doesn't like her father - and I guess that has to translate, at least a little, to how she sees herself given that she's unhappy about being short and bald like him, and not tall and gorgeous like her mother.
I’m glad! :3 Primrose is a very typical middle-schooler, she likes boy bands and vampire novels and anime and grabbing pizza with her handful of nerdy friends. She’s a straight A student that does indeed attend an after school art club, she’s a pretty talented artist! Lately she’s been interested in learning to play guitar, this may end up being a begrudging bonding activity with her father, as he can play quite well. Primrose is deep in that adolescent phase where it becomes uncool to like your parents, so that feeds into her rejection of Angel. She feels she and her mother have gotten along just FINE without him all these years, so she’s resistant to this man popping back into her life and trying to be a parental figure. On the flip side, Prim LOVES her mother, her mean pre-teen facade crumbles instantly around her, Prim is very much still milking her last few years of getting to be babied by her mommy, she’s spoiled and she KNOWS it. She and Carmen are practically best friends, and she is thus protective and suspicious when Angel comes around making her mom sometimes grow sad and quiet. Still, she has a natural interest in him she can’t really help, and tries not to look awed over his sketchbook full of tattoo designs, or the vibrant, sprawling murals he’s painted on city walls.
God I LOVE the visual opposites that Angel and Carmen are. Tol/smol, fluffy/nearly bald, slender/stocky, vivid colors/dark pallet. They really do look striking contrasted together (ain’t gonna lie they both got my bisexual heart doing a little pearl clutching here) The way Angel looks at Primmy 🥹You know when she was born he was the most affectionate/overprotective new doggo daddy that would sometimes just stare at his widdle wrinkle and just like cry cause he MADE A PERFECT THING LOOK AT WHAT HE DID!!! And probably sent hours just snugged up against a sick, pregnant Carmen and just quietly pet and talked to her pup bump while she got some rest. I am HERE for this family drama let’s goooooooo
Angel: *knows what it feels like to sink his teeth into the jugular of a dog twice his size* Also Angel: *licking a napkin* Baby wait, you have cookie crumbs on your face, let me get it Primrose: DAD
I adore Angel so much. Can't resist the short kings 🫡
Did. oh my gosh this is unrelated to the family drama at hand but I'm having a brainwave. did Angel meet Virgil in prison. tell me they didn't meet in prison oh no tell me he's not tryin to bond with his family again while still diving into sketchy business on the side... this HURTS, I knew that learning about what broke up their family was gonna hurt but. goodness, ouch. Angel attempting to provide for his family in the most brutal way possibly... man. MAN. The fact that he and Carmen still love each other but she's still angry about it and he doesn't know how to begin making amends but wants to... ow. Has Angel directly apologized to them yet? Or is he like. trying to atone through his actions/feelin a verbal apology would kind of cheapen things? Is there any hope for Carmen to forgive him? I definitely get her anger and shock and also desperately would like to see their family heal :')
lopoddity
Oh no, Angel didn’t meet Virgil in prison…..Virgil has never been to prison. In fact, around the time Angel was arrested, Virgil (who is younger than Angel) would’ve been setting out for the big city with Savannah, the both of them still wide-eyed and optimistic about making a difference in the world, haha No, Angel met Virgil years later, through Gio. Angel is in debt to Gio, and since Virgil is Gio’s right-hand-man, he’s sort of in debt to Virgil by extension. Angel tries very hard to keep his nose clean, but old debts must be paid, and Virgil makes some pretty tempting offers sometimes…. Angel has definitely apologized to his family before, or tried to, many times. Carmen doesn’t want to hear it, because 1.) words are cheap, and 2.) Angel is surprisingly good with those cheap words, they tend to stir up some old emotions in her that she’d really rather bury. :/
Robo87
I just suddenly thought of a question for my favorite lil dog here…did Angel always have one eye (or lose it when he was younger), or did he lose it in relation to the dogfight? I always assumed it did but now I’m thinking that’d be a pretty hard thing to hide from Carmen unless he got it damaged during his last fight?
FloweryFruitFangs
PRIMROSE DESERVES THE WORLD, I'M SO HAPPY SHE HAS FRIENDS AND A DOTING MOTHER AND A RELATIVELY NORMAL CHILDHOOD DESPITE EVERYTHING. Also yeah, I can totally understand how Carmen feels. It is such a unique, exausting blend of emotions when you feel furious at and betrayed by someone you still deeply love and care about so much...and then you get frustrated at yourself for still caring. Even if Angel got into dogfighting to help his struggling family, was it something he eventually grew to secretly enjoy by the time he got arrested? Even if we know he's genuinely remorseful for what he put his family through, how honest is he with himself about the whole thing?
lopoddity
I'm still sorting out the details, but Angel loses his eye the same night he's arrested. Carmen is horrified when she finally gets to see him and he's wearing bloodied bandages over half his face....and then she's sure to slap him on that side of the face when she learns what happened (....that the dog who did it to Angel may have done so in self-defense.)
lopoddity
Not honest enough. :/ You’re right on the money
FloweryFruitFangs
I thought so! Maybe when/if Angel finally admits that to himself and Carmen it'll at least provide some closure for him and his family.
lopoddity
well yeah, we haven’t even gotten into the nature of dogfighting, or Angel’s relationship with Gio and Virgil >:3
Alight
Why is dogfighting illegal in a world where the dogs are sentient, consenting people? How is it different from wrestling?
lopoddity
Wrestling in legal, but knife fights are not. Dog fighting is bloodsport, with the aim being to maim and maul one's opponent. Betting is a heavy component. As the sport is impossible to regulate, and is historically connected to mob crime, drug trafficking, and gambling rings, it is illegal.
