1.) height comparison of honey and her brothers. Honey is average dog height, Topher and Toffee are just unusually tall and lanky- though Topher slouches a lot.

2.) family drama from Topher’s teen years. Topher was never the straight A student that Toffee was, but he still did the best he could to measure up to their father’s expectations. He thus feels it’s fair to ask dear ol’ Pop to be allowed to choose his own classes for once. Music and metal shop class are simply calling Toph’s name, not the sewing and childcare classes Merry chose to be his electives. Topher is gut-punched when Merry not only refuses, but also reveals he isn’t planning to pay for Topher to go to college, despite funding Toffee’s extensive studies at an expensive private degree program. It’s just not a sensible decision for a young woman, says Merry. Especially, he adds, not one with Topher’s middling grades and lack of any substantial talents. It’s been clear for years that Toffee was always meant to be Merry’s true heir, and now that Merry’s busy with his perfect new family (young wife Maple and tiny tot Honey) there’s really no place for Topher.  This is why it’s better that Topher focus on shaping that prickly personality into a prim and proper young lady, so he can focus on getting a husband, having kids, and, uh-ahem- officially not being Merry’s problem anymore.

It doesn’t go well when Topher chooses this moment to furiously, tearfully announce that he will never be a proper young lady- and that he’s not a lady at all. Never has been. After all, if playing by his father’s rules only ends in pain, what reason does he have to keep up the facade? Topher is a man- and he never wants to speak to his father again.

Toffee, meanwhile, has been dutifully suppressing his own dreams and desires to conform to his father’s wishes for years. While he’s upset at the fracturing of the family, ultimately he cannot ask Topher to compromise his identity the way he has. It feels cruel. He may not presently understand what it means to be transgender, but he does love Topher, and feel a kinship with him in his own feelings of loneliness as a closeted gay man in a hostile conservative space. Toffee will try for some time to bridge the gap between Topher and Merry, but when the time comes that Merry demands he make a choice…..well, he picks his little brother. And so, both Topher and Toffee are cut out of Merry’s will and permanently estranged from their father. This is still the case when Honey reaches out to them, many years later.

Trans topher yeeees 🏳️‍⚧️

tricoloryn

this lineup is so cool to compare shared traits between the three of them!! you can tell they're all related, but they each look like a fairly distinct type of dog, and you can also pick up on the fact that topher and toffee share a bit more traits than honey due to having the same mom. i've always loved how you design siblings, excellent work!

Oh... Ohhhhhhh..... Yeah, that would explain Topher's city block sized chip on that shoulder of his. That Toffee fella is a pretty decent sort. Also that bit about Toffee not quite understanding what Trans actually is but still supporting his babby bro is an amazing insight into Toffee's innate Empathetic nature.

I could see Merry's kids turning out the way they did even before learning that Topher is trans, but it makes a *lot* of sense that he is. Toffee's church being so open and loving (vs what I would imagine would have been a struggle vs Merry's ideals) and Topher being so outspoken and furious (especially towards Honey, who is...a great big tangle of all the things Topher was struggling with when his little sister was born) - I wonder if Honey knows that he's trans? As a side note, I love the ear-ponytail that Topher's sporting! This whole family is about ears disguised as hair.

I’m curious what the brother’s relationship is with their mother. Is she any more accepting? Or did the brothers have to cut out both parents to live their true lives? This definitely hits as a nb (aro? Lesbian? Still figuring it all out) who grew up with a conservative family who are definitely not accepting of who I am and I’ve been debating cutting them out for a good long while.

Topher my beloved. This story really strikes a cord with me as a trans person from the deep south. Lotta church business down here. On a related note, would loooove to see Topher in a full goth/punk outfit >:3

Robo87

*gently holds Topher* shhhh you are my son now. No more pain

She's not at this particular dinner scene, but she's definitely around. Merry divorced their mother to marry his office assistant when Topher was about 8 or 9 years old. Their mother was, unsurprisingly, the same sort of friendly bigot type as their father. Had Merry not dumped her for a younger woman, she likely would have refused to acknowledge Topher's trans identity, pushed him to become a nice wife, etc. Fortunately, this wasn't the case. Their mother, just like Topher, is carrying a massive chip on her shoulder against Merry. After this disastrous dinner, the boys go to tell their mother what happened. Admittedly, as a small town church lady she definitely doesn’t understand what it means to be transgender (or queer), but she will be DAMNED if Merry thinks he's going to tell HER daughter what she's going to do with her life. She becomes the pinnacle of "a little confused, but has the spirit", an overbearingly supportive mom that starts to dismantle her die-hard beliefs because she loves her children more than concepts. If Topher wants to "dress like a boy", then let her! If Toffee tearfully admits to being gay, she will hear NO apologies from him about it. She will embarrass the hell out of him trying to introduce him to every potentially queer man she knows. When Topher begins his transition, she might accidentally use the wrong pronoun in the beginning, but she learns to correct herself without fuss, and eventually becomes a trademark doting "boy mom", always gushing over how handsome Topher is and why won't he wear the nice ironed polo shirt she bought him and when is he going to find a wife/husband/whatever and give her grandpups? Topher and Toffee love their mom, even if they act a bit embarrassed by her it's largely a front. They're a family of 3 and deeply devoted to each other.

A mother so vindictive and petty towards her ex it leads to positive character development and growth? I love it!! Topher: "Mother, I'm a man" Mother: "Uhhh, I don't know, ya sure?" Toffee: "Dad isn't thrilled ☹️" Mother holding Topher in a bear hug: "Her pronouns are he/him😡"

lopoddity

Ha, the ear ponytail would probably ache if you wore it too long. Honey doesn't know Topher is trans. He's long been at a point in his transition where Merry would just sound like an idiot if he tried to spitefully keep misgendering him, so Merry has been referring to him and Toffee as "his two wayward sons" for as long as Honey can remember. Toffee will talk about his own struggles growing up gay to Honey, but he knows Topher being trans is not for him to disclose. Topher doesn't make a secret out of it and is proud to be trans, but he doesn't like Honey and can already predict her naive and ignorant reaction, so he's not planning on telling her.

Violetattack

Augh this hits, poor Topher :< It feels like this schism definitely informed the way Merry reacted to Honey coming out, it adds such a sneaky manipulative layer to Merry's whole deal too-It's not that he wouldn't kick out his kids for being gay, it's that he's running out of heirs. I can imagine his pressuring getting so much worse when/if he finds out Honey's been reconnecting with her brothers, or if her act starts to slip at all.

lopoddity

Exactly! :3 Merry, scoffing: Hmph, we need to have a talk about how you've been raising Tiff- Mom, already picking up a rock to throw: She prefers to be called Topher, actually

Scyllarus

I mean, regular hair ponytails hurt after a while if they're tight, so I can imagine it would be a short-term thing. And yeah, Topher is already dealing with Honey's uninformed (and unasked for) opinions - the last thing he needs is to try to explain being trans to her. That being said, I would love to see Honey's reaction - here's someone who completely rejected the life that she's currently trying to lead, and who could absolutely point out every reason why it didn't suit him (and maybe doesn't even suit her) I also absolutely love that the boys have a super-supportive mother! It's unfortunate that sometimes it takes some awful shit happening to you to reject your old beliefs, but I'm glad she chose her kids and not like...doubled down and latched onto Merry.

Corinne Stephenson

I know you said you didn't want to go deep into their mother's development because we're working with a large cast filled with dogs already, but uh... Yeah we're gonna need to meet this fine woman

Robo87

God this reminds me of my own mom 🤣 like dead ass when I came out to this woman as bi in high school she said “well maybe you’re not gay, you just support gay people” 🤣🤣🤣 We’ve both come a long, long way since then and now she’s very comfortable telling people I’m bi (I’m actually very happily ace with some other assorted queer spice sprinkled in but hey it took me like 5 years to explain to mom what exactly “bi” is so ya know baby steps). I will say that my mom was one of the first people besides myself that my cousin came out to as a lesbian a few years back and she was super supportive and treats my cousins’ girlfriend like another niece, so I’m proud of her progress ❤️

nighthawk0913

I'm curious, because it seems like Topher's dead name is Tiffany or something similar based on the second picture, did he choose a new name that sounded similar to his brother's intentionally? Or did it just end up being a coincidence that the name he chose was similar to Toffee's?

lopoddity

He liked the name Topher, and he especially liked that it sounded a lot like Toffee (and also Toffee’s actual birth name, Tobias). He looks up to Toff a lot.

knickknacks

Golly! every new thing we learn about the Meadowsweet fam makes me despise Merry more and more. He's just. terrible in every way The fact that, even not fully understanding what his brother was going through, Toffee chose to stick by him.. gaaah I love these siblings man. I'm glad that the boys are doing better now that they're away from their father. Did either of them ever internalize/go along with Merry's beliefs to the extent that Honey has? Or is that kind of a product of her being the last "proper" chance at an heir he's got left/her trying to measure up and not disappoint Merry?

lopoddity

Thanks! :) And yes. Topher’s always been a bit of a rebel and never truly bought into his family’s beliefs. Toffee, however, tried terribly to be the son his father wanted, which meant he went through an aggressive religious zealot phase, complete with loud performative prayer and trying to convert/recruit people and protesting the things his father said were evil (eg. modern music, public schools, social programs, women’s reproductive care, etc). He was homophobic and sexist and classist and outspoken about all of it, and he goes to a private religious college so he can follow in his father’s footsteps….but instead he and another student take a shine to each other, and Toffee has his first experience with another male. The thrill of it is quickly outpaced by the shame and guilt, and he decides to ask Merry for advice. That goes about as well as you’d expect, with Merry chastising Toffee in disgust and urging him to pray for forgiveness. What follows is an ugly period in Toffee’s life where he tries very hard to follow the divine plan, punishing his inevitable queer forays with heavy drinking and fasting and other acts of self-harm. The guilt and shame eats him alive, he forgets the self-righteous anger he once knew and only feels suffering. He never wants anyone else to feel the way he does. He begins exploring charity work, little acts that bring him momentary reprieve from his heartache. And when Topher has that final fight with Merry, Toffee knows he can’t let Topher suffocate the way he is suffocating. In choosing his brother over Merry, Toffee slowly learns to set himself free. The brothers encourage each other to explore aspects of themselves without shame. Toffee no longer has to be the perfect son, instead he can pursue the things that make him happy. Theater, the arts, helping the community. Baking, dating, building soft, close relationships with men both romantic and platonic. Supporting his brother and watching him bloom. This is why Toffee is so patient to Honey- he used to be a lot like her. He worries that underneath her ego and ignorance, she’s hurting rather badly.

cactus bastrop

lmao at merry not being able to misgender topher anymore. that tweet thats like "at a certain part of your transition misgendering becomes funny, like i have d cups grandpa the waitress thinks you have dementia"

FROSTBURNE

damn, I just realized that ALL of Merry's kids are queer. talk about a twist of fate by the way, does Honey know that Topher's trans? how does she feel about that?

AsTheJayFlies

i love their nicknames,,, from tiff and toff to toff and toph 💙 the boys

AsTheJayFlies

Lop already answered this question from scyllarus further up in the comments! short answer no she doesnt

FROSTBURNE

lol how did I not see that? I get the feeling that is not gonna be fun for topher if/when Honey finds out

FloweryFruitFangs

Topher: "(Not) sorry dad, I'm a trans man" Honey: "Dad, I've told you before, I'm a lesbian." Merry: *growing more frustrated, while not realizing/understanding that Topher is also pansexual* "Is there anybody in this family who likes men!?" Toffee: *raises hand* "I do!" :D

Cam

The sweater vest shirt combo that young topher and Honey share is sooooo- I know Honey’s style is most likely based on what she was encouraged to wear as a kid but if she was toddler at this time I wonder if she is dressing somehow based on someone she vaguely remembers and possibly cared about a lot as a wee tot. Or she found Tophers old wardrobe and robbed it

Corinne Stephenson

Topher being trans and pan makes it near impossible for Merry to ignore his queerness and I'm smugly here for it.
