can u be a cat person if u are, in fact, a dog

i just wanted to scribble mal stretching her leggies so her toes do the 8 gold doubloons thing, but I ended up cleaning and coloring it. At least Topher is amused, but he’s probably high too tbh

Absolutely adorable. I may or may not have a crush on Mal.

Cats and dogs? Living together?!? Mass hysteria! Is catnip considered drugs in this setting? Cats go berserk for that crap

boreanSlumber

idk if this was intentional, but the way mal doesn’t have her hand claws distended sent me down a rabbit hole of “well sometimes well meaning pet owners get their cats declawed even if it’s very bad for them, and oftentimes they won’t do the back ones because they don’t use them to scratch stuff as much and is thus unnecessary.” THEN i was like well…imagine if mal had her claws removed by her herbivore parents in order to “allow her to play her instruments to her fullest.” anyway im sure this wasn’t on purpose but i thought i’d share my rabbit hole

I’m physically fighting for my L I F E trying to not say “OOOOOOO BIG STRETCH.”

Declawing is outlawed in modern day FB except in extreme circumstances (say, a psychiatric patient that uses their claws to self-harm). However the procedure hasn’t always been illegal. In the past, it was used on criminals (convicted or suspected), and populations deemed to have “severe behavioral issues”, so most commonly the mentally ill and cognitively impaired- individuals that couldn’t fight back. Declawing saw a slight uptick in popularity around the time predator and prey populations began to integrate in large cities, with some schools requiring it for very young feline children, who could easily severely injure prey children by accident. Some schools even went so far as to perform this procedure without parental consent or knowledge. Proponents of declawing argued the dangers of letting the feline population walk about freely with essentially hidden knives within their hands, while felines everywhere railed against the practice, calling it barbaric, an unnecessary and cruel act of mutilation. Declawing was officially made illegal in the mid 20th century. There remain a few scant declawed feline folk alive today, they are typically elderly. Mal’s parents wouldn’t have done it to her, however. Mal was a very obedient child, and her parents would’ve known better than to surgically remove bones from the fingers of a child they were trying to turn into a champion cellist. At least, not when the surgery’s recovery period was known to be so lengthy, anyway…

Topher being violently disemboweled at night when Mal stretches her murder toes against him: ooo BIG stretch

Really makes you wanna just... rub that tum... I've been wondering, does Mal's gigantism cause any health or mobility issues for her?

lopoddity

Fantastic question! She's got some early-onset joint issues, her knees and hips ache when she physically exerts herself too much, and her lower back hurts almost all the time. She stays fit and stretches constantly to keep herself limber, but she still has the occasional bad day, especially when it's cold out, where her joints hurt, her muscles get sore and tight, and she suffers from headaches. This is part of the reason she smokes pot, it helps her manage her pain. Topher has also gone with her to her physical therapist and learned massage techniques to help her on her achey days. As Honey is employed as a "helper hound"- a service dog for the elderly and disabled- Topher is Mal's unofficial helper hound, fetching her things on her bad days, running errands, and bringing her heated gel pads.

"At least not when the surgery's recovery period was known to be so lengthy anyway..." So would they have done it if it was an easier procedure? They don't sound like the greatest parents so I wouldn't put it past them

oh, I LOVE her. I think if I could stretch like that my quality life would improve vastly. (I understand appreciate how judicious you are with tagging relevant content on your posts but in this case specifically it is making me laugh a little bit given that the drug in question is. catnip) Is catnip something that, in this world, affects felines only/to the largest degree? Is it something other species can partake in, or do other animal folks simply not get/not have the same reaction to the stuff that their feline friends do?

lopoddity

As in our world, catnip only seems to affect cats. Not even all cats- many report feeling no reaction to catnip whatsoever. But for others, catnip induces anything from a euphoric high to a sudden burst of frenzied energy. Mal experiences increased sensation (her pillow probably feels mild-blowingly amazing rn), mild euphoria, and a distorted sense of time. It also makes her pupils dilate and she sometimes drools. For a feline like Priscilla, catnip usually causes paranoia, and she'll stare unmoving at the corner of the room, possibly witnessing eldritch horrors visible only to her. For Perry, catnip does the equivalent of slamming a couple shots of espresso, and he too will experience euphoria and distorted reality, with the addition of zoomies.

Yeah when I stretch like that, I just throw a Charlie horse in my calf and crave the sweet release of death

lopoddity

Yes, catnip is a drug, but it's effects are not consistent in all felines. Some cats do indeed go berserk (experiencing euphoric bliss like Mal here), but some feel only a very mild calming effect, similar to a warm cup of chamomile tea. And some cats have no reaction at all. Catnip is a moderately restricted substance in FB, concentrated catnip toys and teas can only be purchased by customers over the age of 18. It’s difficult to regulate though, as catnip can be easily grown at home- Mal keeps a couple of catnip plants in her balcony garden.

It's the worst when you do it in your sleep and startle wide awake from the pain. Leg cramps are usually caused by potassium deficiency, try eating more bananas. :3

Random but have you seen the mlp infection au going around on tiktok? There are some unique ideas (I really like unicornic's stuff) it would be cool to see your take on it. Obv big ask just curious especially if you feel like drawing ponies again 😅

m0nk3y_m4n

I was wondering: When did Mal discover she was trans? I could imagine it first came about after she and Topher started fooling around. They're up late one night, having some pillowtalk (aka deep, existential conversations), and she admits that she never felt right in her body. Not because of the gigantism, but because of...other reasons that she can't quite understand. She's never liked being viewed as a man; whenever her students call her "mister" it sends a bad chill down her spine; and she has found that she's always wanted to lean into the world of femininity, putting on makeup, dresses, growing out her hair, etc. Is this normal? Is something wrong with her? Que Topher just giving her a blank stare for a solid minute before saying: "Yeah, I think your trans. Welcome to the club". And then how did Mal's parents react when she proceeded to transition?

Bigsmile

Just say no Mal, only losers do relatively harmless drugs! Yall need cat Jesus!

lopoddity

I’m far too ancient and withered to learn new technology like tiktok. But I did see uunicornic’s infection concept dump on deviantart, and yeah, I thought it was pretty cool. :3 Unfortunately zombies and grim dark AUs were never really my thing. I do feel the itch to draw ponies every now and then, but I can’t say I’m interested in that infection stuff.

Lammergayier

This is a bit of a weird question so forgive me if the wording seems off but. Mal is a leopard with gigantism yeah? Does she ever get mistaken for a jaguar due to this? Ik jaguars are quite a bit bigger than leopards irl but I'm not sure how drastic of a difference it'd be in fuzzbutts

Scyllarus

What's killing me is just...clipping?? Or claw caps??? Are even easier to put on when your cat is a person who can understand reason. And I'm sure it's not uncommon for feline folk to do so in modern FB, which - the mental image of lion-sized claw caps are hilarious. I assume there's probably some discourse (tm) around clipping or capping, though? Like whether or not it's a choice vs dehumanizing

TheTabbyBadger

Now I’m picturing little kitten toddlers getting their little claws stuck in like blankets or the couch and freaking out but absolutely NOT letting mom and dad help get their claw out, they can do it just fine you know!

lopoddity

In FB, leopards and jaguars get confused very frequently. Species confusion is common in general, the average person just isn't deeply knowledgeable on the many billions of different animal species. Clouded leopards get confused for ocelots, amur leopards get confused for african, and yes, Mal gets asked if she's a jaguar sometimes. She is much bigger than a jaguar, however, closer to the size of a tiger.

lopoddity

This is a question with a looooong answer. I'm still working on figuring all of it out. The jist of it is, Mal thought she was a man that liked to do a bit of gender experimentation in the bedroom. It was her shameful secret until she met Topher, who not only enjoyed it, but encouraged it. Mal spent her entire life bearing the burden of other people's expectations, so it was almost frightening to finally have a safe space to explore what SHE wanted for once. To experiment (privately) with her appearance, how she wanted to be addressed, how she wanted others to perceive her. It makes her feel so at peace that it begins to feel wasteful to restrict it to the bedroom. Topher is eventually able to convince her to spend a night on the town as his "ladyfriend", taking her out to dinner and serenading her and dragging her to a queer nightclub where the folk there don't bat an eye at Mal's deep voice or broad shoulders or how her dress doesn't fit quite right and call her "gorgeous" and "queen" anyway- and yeah, it hits Mal like a brick through a window that she doesn't want to go back to before. That there's a whole damned world out there beyond the person her family expects her to be. Mal's journey takes years (and it's still ongoing), but she considers Topher her best friend because he was her first TRUE friend, the very first person to encourage her to be herself (and love her all the same).

AsTheJayFlies

How does this combine with your most recent post abt mal? does this self discovery happen before they lose touch when toph drops out? since you said that mal is already out when they meet up again years later at a music festival? or is this bit no longer canon? :0
