Timeless Comic Set

Seem to activate very quickly with just a little bit of water.

Swatching on their paper:

Swatching on Blick:

The color selection is really pretty, but doesn't necessarily 'make sense' to me as a comic palette? Like, it has a very antique or morandi feel, but not necessarily a comic feel? These also don't seem like colors that will mix well.

Forced Granulation Swatches:

The forced granulation on some of these colors is really pretty- like Juniper splits really nicely, and the Indigo clay has an interesting split, as does cold forest, and even sap green has some pretty granulation. Red grape has some pretty granulation as does flat peach. But again, none of that screams 'comic' to me, although I DO think those are lovely for atmospheric backgrounds. It could just be how I approach watercolor comics though.

Antique green is awful, I'm really struggling to get it to activate, and I wish they had included another blue.

Color Mixing:

Wet into Wet

Fieldtest:

Antique style hydrdangea round on the Hahnemule? The colors are rather nice for that. something with a morandi vibe? Maybe with a little face peeping out to utilize the peach and red?

Fieldtest notes are in the full Shownotes.

Pros:

Handmade

Small Business

Eco friendly options

Has a large range of colors- not just earthtones or mica based watercolors

Cons:

Expensive

Limited availability

This set:

Muddy colors

Not much ability to layer

Not much movement

Not much mixability

Name doesn't suit the selection IMO

However:

Might work beautifully as granulating watercolors for backgrounds

The Verdict:

These are not a greate fit for me. While I'm happy I could support a small business, and I personaly know how much that support really can mean, A lot of artists are on a limited budget, and I'd hoped for more flexiblity from a color palette named after Comics. As a comic artist, I find these watercolors not up to my standard for watercolor comics, however, you may feel differently! Let me know if you love Essee watercolors, or if I just purchased the wrong set!
