Drawing Class Notes:

Class 1: Skill Building- freehand drawing basic shapes with confidence, drawing geometic shapes- this also allows me to check where they are RE motor skills, and helps get everyone at the same starting point

Where we're starting today

Goals- what would you like to learn how to draw during this class?

Don't throw away bad sketches- we need them to judge our progress.

Our materials & how to comfortably hold a pencil

Drawing is like a sport, and what do we do before sports?

Stretch!

Talk about good drawing habits- draw from the shoulder as much as possible, draw larger, don't worry about erasing, warm up before drawing

Basic drawing Drills

Circles of various sizes

Parallel Lines and parallel cross-hatching

Squares of various sizes

lines with ellipses

S curves

Diagonal cross-hatch

zig zag getting larger

circular spirals

curled spirals

long s curves

Geometric shapes from various views and at different sizes- and we'll get into how to do that later in this class- mainly cubes

Spheres (same thing)

Cylinders

Tight spirals both directions

Loose loop de loops

Exercises taken from this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ibbV3OOWUMI

Let's Practice

Parallel Lines- vertical

P Lines- Horizontal (and give definitions in the presentation)

Exercises taken from this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EWdCpU-IAKo

As you draw these different types of lines, what sort of emotions do they evoke?

Goal is not to be fast, but confident and deliberate

Speed comes with practice and confidence

Trick for drawing a straight line

Basic shapes they should be able to draw- spend class practicing

circles

Squares

triangles

pentagons

hexagons

Emphasize that it does not have to be perfect!

Learning how to see the world- lets step outside, and I want you to select a real world object and tell me what shape it is

Artists do this all the time to learn how to break down what they're seeing in 3d and turn it into 2d

Have them do this with simple objects

Your Homework this week!

Practice your stretches and drawing warmups

Practice your basic shapes until you can fill a sheet of each with confidence

Practice drawing objects from around your house as basic shapes

Practice drawing 3d Geometric Shapes

thank you so much for the class, i am so happy that you are sharing these classes with us. I figure i have very good grasp of drawing but i will love to learn to about more structured drawing fundamental especially in areas of perspective, 3 dimensional drawing and when i am drawing from my imagination i struggled with colour selection. I am hoping that future you will touch on colour selection.
