Rougarou in Progress (Patreon)
Content
Rougarou (roo ga roo) or loup garou is kinda like a Louisiana werewolf.
My definition is based on the display at the Audobon Zoo in the Louisiana section and my Cajun Louisiana History/Hunter's Safety teacher, Mr Meachem, and may differ from other folks from other parts of Louisiana. These things tend to get watered down sometimes and evolve with time and telling. i havent been to the zoo in years, but there used to be (and may still be) a creepy, mouldy sculpture of a rougarou with Spanish moss and shells for nails and glowing red eyes half hidden in a corner by the white alligators, ready to jump out at distracted four year olds. He creeped me out so much as a child, I didn't want to go near it, as sometimes in Louisiana, adults think it's funny to scare kids by pretending to be a lifeless scarecrow or sack doll.
Ok so if I was terrified of our swamp treading werewolf as a kid, why am I painting Kara as one?
Because I enjoy the Rougarou Festival in Houma so much, and wanted to do my own take on their poster- a little fanart.
This piece is still very WIP- I have the sky gradient in, the moon and logo started, and have started to create contrast with grisaille, but this is far from finished. The Fest is next weekend, and we plan to go for fun (and hopefully see the cultural exhibits). I hope to finish this illustration by then, but I seem to have caught a cold and still have other work to do, so we shall see. I thought this was a neat stage to share though- you can see things coming together while still seeing behind the curtain to understand how its made.
