This is an early access video! Graphitint Paint Pan Set

I was kinda lukewarm on the Inktense Paint Pan Set- the colors feel kinda dull and flat as they're India Ink Based.  This put me off purchasing the follow up set of 12, but when BomberBee mentioned that Derwent released a Graphitint set, my ears perked right up.

I really love muted colors and have reviewed several watercolor sets that aim to fulfill just that.  Recently, I was fortunate enough to get a sample from my friend Kabocha of the Van Gogh Dusk Colors, and I really liked what they had to offer.  This set intrigued me not just because of the muted, possibly granulating colors, but the notion that I might be able to erase these added a fun element.

Graphitint were available as pencils first, and in a follow up video, I'll compare the two products head to head.

Packaging:

The Graphitint Paint Pan Set and the Derwent Inktense Paint Pan Set are packaged very similarly- simple cardboard box, plastic case, removable half pans.  With a bit of struggle, the half pans pop out, so you can make your preferred palette.

Colors in this set:

Autumn Brown

Russet

Meadow

Green Grey

Slate Green

Ocean Blue

Steel Blue

Dark Indigo

Aubergine

Juniper

Port

Graphite Grey

The paint itself actually feels a bit like graphite- cooler to the touch and a bit more metallic than your average half pan.  And these suckers are REALLY prone to popping out of their half pans.

Comes with a cleaning sponge (I never use these) waterbrush, and built in palette

Swatching

These activate quickly and have good color intensity.  The color selection is nice as well.

there are some really pretty colors in this palette, and there's a bit of granluation from the additional graphite, which really adds a lot to these colors.  However, like graphite, they are a bit opaque, and combine that with the fact that Inktense tends to run a bit opaque as well.

The Lift Test

All colors prone to lifting

The Erase Test

Disappointingly, these don't really erase.  I was really excited about that potential aspect, so it would've been a cool use.

Pros:

I'm a sucker for muted colors

Nice granulation- this was really missing from the Inktense pans

Compact travel paletete

Cons:

Prone to lifting

Dont erase

A bit opaque

These are probably great for griselle and monochrome painting

Music:

On the Passing of Time
