The Pencil:
This one has a grip! We've reviewed Pentel Sharp in the past, and will compare the two in a moment
1.3mm lead is pretty heft- it's ALMOST at lead holder level.
This really probably isn't designed for your average student/artist. It sounds like this is for a speciality use, but it was stocked with all the other mechanical pencils.
You would need a lead pointer to get a sharp point on this
Compared to the Sharp:
I wish they'd put this rubber grip on all theri mechanical pencils- it's a big improvement!
The Sharp HD has a round body, the Sharp has a squared off body. The two mechanical pencils use different eraser refills, and the clip on the Sharp HD is shorter and possibly sturdier.
Honestly, these are probably two totally different pencils in Japan, but in the US, it seems like they were branded under the same branch.
Reminds me a BIT of the Pentel Multi 8
Multi 8 uses 2mm lead, so the lead isn't interchangeably (sadly, that would be really cool)
Keep an eye out for the Multi 8 Review, coming soon!
Also sorta similar to the Pinkfoot mechanical pencil (review coming soon!)
Writing Test:
Note: This is designed to mark on porous surfaces, so glazed and non porous surfaces like glass or plastic won't work.
Easy to write with, and very comfortable! Some give in the feed to help prevent snapping.

GOing to switch to the original Sharp:
Not abad at all as a sketching pencil. If you want finer, more nuanced lines, sharpen using a lead pointer. The lead itself is easier to handle and less prone to breaking since it's larger, and this would really lend itself to sketching at larger sizes, particularly on canvas or wood.
At some point, Pentel used to sell the 1.3mm lead in colors, but now it's only available in B lead.
The Verdict:
Not bad at all! There are some elements I wish Pentel would apply to the regular Sharp, and I wish there was a wider variety of colors available for the refills. A red or blue lead would make this pencil even better! Obviously, this isn't really a pencil for your average student- the refills are a bit harder to come by, and the lead size is huge, which would make writing a bit difficult, but for artists, this pencil could be a great in-between from mechanical pencil to clutch style lead holder.
