Notes:
Some of the paints have dried out a bit in the palette. I think the area on the side is meant to hold a sponge or something?
Applied b/g toning wash of yellow.
The b/g was taking awhile to dry, so I turned on the fan. I left the palette open, so when I returned, I spritzed all the paints with a little water.
Mixed Hooker's green dark, Vandyck brown, and Prussian blue to start the pond water.
Using a sweeping, dancing motion with a small flat brush- using it to create thin strokes and trying to leave room for light reflections. Occasionally dipped in Indigo or VanDyke brown, wet into wet, to create shadows. Applied several layers this way
Left the pallet open all day, going to spray it with water to activate
When painting the Waterlily:
Worked pretty thickly with some colors- a really thin layer of the opera rose (ish) then dabbed in the red-violet (thickly) and the cool yellow (thickly) then dabbed in the orange (thickly) When colors are worked thick, they're a little bit more resistant to flowing on the paper- a bit sluggish, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. Paper buckling caused the orange part of the lily to travel.
I actually really like the layout of the palette. Easy to use, easy to pick up color, not much color pollution. Kudos.
In reference to the lilypads: Color laying is really beautiful with these. Both optical and wet into wet blending are really nice.
Spritzed it with water to get the pigments to move around a bit more/see if the pigments would move at all, just sorta loosen things up a bit. Nothing seems to be moving with the spritzing Used a clean brush to encourage more color movement.
As I apply more layers, in some areas it seems almost like some of the color lifted up in some areas, like with the hair, or on the water, or on the lilypads. It could just be how I've layered the colors
Pros:
Very easy to activate- just a spritz of water is enough
Easy to mix
Very easy to use
Colors are occasionally a bit opaque, which allows for interesting layering and reworking (waterlily, lilypads)
Cons:
It's a little strange that there isn't a true purple in this set, although the ultramarine and red-violet mix quite cleanly
Colors are a bit opaque, so I needed to reink some areas for clarity
I probably overworked this a bit to try and achieve what I had in mind
Verdict:
I really like these watercolors, and while this piece doesn't shine the way I'd hoped, I think these paints would really be wonderful on a paper that invites more granulation and used with a looser hand. But even if you work as tight as I do, you'll probably enjoy the Paul Rubens tube watercolors, particularly as the beginning of a larger collection. They're affordable and a joy to paint with, the palette is well built and works quite well, and in general, these are great watercolors that I highly recommend to fine artist watercolorists as well as illustrators and comic artists like myself.
