Shownotes:

Used these earlier when watercolor painting eggs b/c I wanted a semi opaque palette that had a lot of good florals premixed.

Preactivated watercolor with a spritz of clean water.  Notced that many half pans had shrunk, even those that saw little use.

When mixing up color, it really globs onto your brush, even softer brushes.  This makes saturation control more challenging, especially if you're working directly from half pan to paper, but even if you're mixing, it's still more of a challenge.  This also leads to a lot of wasted paint when you clean off your paint brush.

This is also why student grade watercolors are not necessarily more economical- you waste a lot of paint

That said, these handle really well for student grade, even better than much of their competition (Sennelier L'Aquarelle, Winsor and Newton's Cotman)

Even dried out in a ceramic palette, colors reactivate and mix cleanly and easily.  You're not going to have to rinse off  and restart.

Theres are fun to use.  Good granulation when you want it.  Ability to layer, ability to mix  colors.  Not overly opaque and chalky.

Pros:

Very affordable

Handles a lot like professional watercolor

Colors are bright and saturated- a little can go a long way, and allow for clean physical and optical mixes.

You get a LOT of color, so this could be a great set for folks who dislike doing a lot of color mixing, and would prefer to just pick from a selection (so good for comic artists, commission artists, ect)

Cons:

Half pans are very close together, so it's very easy to pollute colors accidentally

The half pans are a bit smaller than traditional half pans

You're going to work through these pans pretty quick.

Verdict:

Great for student grade watercolors.  There's a lot to love about this palette that punches well above its paygrade.  It's a lot of color in a compact form factor- ideal for traveling artists.  It's very affordable, and you can find it at many brick and mortar stores, or online through Amazon and AliExpress.  It handles much like it's big brother, the Paul Rubens tubens, at roughly half the price (depending on where you buy it)

Basically, I really like them and I highly recommend them.  For years, I’ve tried to encourage American artists to just spend the extra and go pro- bc usually student w/c in the US is only slightly cheaper than their professional counterparts, and the professional watercolors handle better and last longer.  But with these?  These are great.  They handle A LOT like the Paul Rubens, and depending on where you buy them, they’re half the price.  These are a great option for artists on a budget, infrequent watercolor artists, younger watercolor artists, or anyone who appreciates great cheap watercolors.
