How does it Erase?
Ehhhh- care must be used when erasing on this paper-
Before painting, this paper needs to be supported. I used washi tape to adhere it to a chipboard support
Fieldtest is done with Qor watercolors- I use these paints frequently, so I know how they generally handle on both cellulose and cotton rag. Typically, they’re vibrant on either, so they should play well on this mixed fiber paper.
So even with support, this paper wants to Danger Pringle up when water is added. It also does not handle additional water well, color moves a lot and unpredictably- it’s not fun, it’s just kinda annoying. I generally dislike mixed fiber watercolor papers as they tend to have the worst tendencies of both parent fibers. It also makes it more difficult to predict how the paper will handle- cellulose papers handle one way, cotton-rag another.
Seems kinda slow to dry- even compared to some of the cotton rag papers I regularly use.
Wet into wet is also kinda eh on this paper.
I really like the little bite-sized round format and while this paper has limitations, I think this would be fun to do small floral watercolor illustrations on. It’s not a GREAT paper, if it were more common, I could more easily recommend you try it, as it’s not bad either, but it’s not really worth chasing down.
Colors seem to dry kinda muted on this paper. It’s difficult to build up the kind of color intensity I’m used to with Qor watercolors. The color mixes also look kinda muddy, even though I know Qor usually mixes really cleanly.
I’m still kinda disappointed by how small these rounds are- the tin itself seems a better size. The end result is a cute, little watercolor piece, but I would’ve preferred the slightly larger size.
Hydrangea
Painted with my pastel opaque set- a lot of Holbein
Colors go down vibrant, and dry kinda dull, as mentioned in the iris segment, but it's always disappointing to see in a wet into wet application, especially when painting florals.
Funnily enough, colors don't really move on this paper, which is kinda unusual, as colors will move A LOT on cellulose papers. Even while still wet, even when spritzing, they'll move a bit, but not a whole lot.
on the plus side, can handle repeated layers of paint without turning to total mud
might be a good one for gouache, esp if it were larger?
Because Opacity can sometimes read as muddiness, I wanted to reink a bit and the curve of the danger pringle makes inking a bit challenging.
Cactus blossom
In ways, it handles a lot like cellulose when wet, if you try to dab in more pigment, it just pools out, it won't even accept the pigment. It's a bit temperamental too- it can't really decide WHAT kind of paper it wants to behave like- this is what I mean by worst of both types.
Opaque colors start to look muddy on this paper
