As an artist, using Instagram to attract new customers- readers, commissioners, and paid client work, promoting conventions and classes- used to be a huge part of my social media strategy, and a great way to help ensure a convention, class, or Kickstarter was a success.  Instagram has changed A LOT over the years (and recently, is about to change a lot more), and for many artists, it's not nearly as useful as it used to be.  Algorithmic changes ensure that those following your account no longer see what you post, and this is a massive source of frustration for many artists.

At one point, Instagram met with artists and influencers to give them the skinny on what they REALLY want from users- what sort of activity will ensure that your followers actually see your posts.  RaineyLune (linked below) was kind enough to share that scoop, and many artists went nuts- it's at least 4 hours a day!

After a year of hemming and hawing, and after watching Swell Entertainment's Instagram challenge, I decided to try and tackle it myself, to see if doing Instagram's dance actually meant more engagement, more follows, and possibly, more business.

The Long Version (just under 4 hours OMG) includes analyzing my Instagram and analytics, developing a content and posting gameplan, using Canva and scheduling, generating batch content, and of course, the actual challenge!  The Short(er) Version includes the challenge and setting goals, but much of the prep has been cut out to save on time!

All About Instagram:

Reels can tell if you have borders or Tiktok watermarkers

Best reels have vertical format that takes up the whole screen, high quality

IGTV

Longer videos, deeper content

Utilize closed captions

Instagram live

Seems like it works well for interviews

Can add up to 4 creators on the screen- will alert other creators

Might be fun for like, hangout and chat?

Main difference b/w features is

Length

How it's Discovered

Ratio- (how the content is presented)

Promoting your Patreon on Insta

Have to make Patreon seem exclusive

Share what your patrons are getting that isn't available to the public

Can provide casual updates on stories

Can also do monthly highlight reels to share- can just be a sneak peek of what you've been working on that went out to Patrons early

Share your story- talk about how you started, art school, your goals, ect0 be transparent about the journey

Tips for how to grow

Think about who is your audience currently, and who do you want your audience to be?

You're not just talking to yourself

Be considerate of where you think your audience is coming from

To get people to cross the platform, you need a REALLY strong voice and personality- how are YOU going to do that, as someone who's angry but gentle??

You can be open with your audience and ask for their support (like Kara, or with shows, ect)

Don't forget to promote your Patreon on Instagram from time to time

holy heck, this made me tired. Not the video itself, but the amount of work you had to put in to do it all. O__O

Becca Hillburn

Yeeeppp. They really are asking a LOT from original content creators, and even trying to give them what they asked for didn't really work. I'm glad I gave it a shot, bc at least now I know.
