Superior Watercolor palette

I've reviewed quite a few other Superior watercolor products here on the channel:

Watercolor Fan

Watercolor Watch

Travel Palette

The palette itself comes in a nice blue gift box.  Unlike the watercolor watch, it does not come with additional paperwork or information, just the palette itself.  And unlike the 'fan', it does not come with a waterbrush.

The palette folds accordian style, and has a thumb loop on the back for plein air painting.  Some of the panels click into place to provide stability.

58 'pans'- pans are shallow and removable.

Quick to activiate

Saturated color

Muddy the water fast

Sopme of the pans have already started to shrink or buckle

In terms of quality, reminds me of the Meiliang watercolors

Definitely student grade, but not a bad student grade

A lot of colors, so you pro9bably aren't going to need to do a lot of mixing, which could be useful

the palette wiggles a little as I swatch, but not nearly as bad as the fan palette did

Still takes up a lot of desk space

Colors have some fun granulation

Color pollution is definitely noticable- I try to swatch an entire row b/w water changes, and it's definitely muddy and polluting the other colors by the end of the line- you would need frequent water changes with this palette

The pastels REALLY pollute the water (to noone's surprise)

Color Mixing

These muddy the water QUICK- which tells me that a lot of that paint is just gonna go down the drain, and that you're wasting a lot of paint every time you wash your brush.  These things are probably FULL of optical brighteners BUT

Atomic:

Easy to mix pretty clean color blends, and there's just enough of variance in granulation to keep things interesting.

Glazing/Optical:

Why is it that my cheap Chinese student grade watercolors handle optical mixing like CHAMPS and a lot of other brands DONT.

Lift test:

Pretty much all of these are lifting, with the only exception being periwinkle and turquoise blue.  Be careful with how and when you layer them, they can take some glazing, but not too much.

Pros and Cons

Pros:

Whole lotta color going on here- if you aren't into color mixing, this could be a great palette for you

Similar, tonally, to a Gansai palette, including pastels, so if you like the look of gansai watercolors, this might be a great cheaper alternative

Folds up very compact

In general, a nice color gamut- a lot of color to choose from

Colors mix decently well, and layer decently well

This is just a FUN palette

Cons:

Maybe too many colors?  Some colors are really similar, especially some of the yellows.  Could do with more variety in the earth tones.  Also, two almost identical olive greens

Have to wait until the paints are fully dry to fold it up and put it away- many other palette designs don't require this, but a lot of the Superior palette designs seem to

The paints themselves dont have refills, so basically once you've used your 12 fav colors, you can either refill from a tube and color match, or replace the whole thing- could result in a lot of waste

These pans are SHALLOW- maybe 1/4 of a half pan?

These paints shrink after getting wet

Paints are full of optical brighteners, and get used up FAST- you can tell how much paint you're wasting by looking at the rinse cup

Verdict:

This is a ridiculous, kinda big, bombastic set that's definitely different (in a good way) from many of the other student grade watercolor sets I've reviewed here.  This set's layout is downright weird, but not necessarily bad, and while it takes up a lot of space, it also offers a lot of colors, including pastels.  It's just plain fun, and I'm struggling to come up with who this is for, because I can't think of who it isn't for, other than too serious, only fine art artists who can't stand a little whimsy.
