The palette takes up a lot of space, but you can also easily get a large brush in there. You will want to make a color map that accurately reflects the color and placement though, because the masstone for several of these, esp the blues, makes it challenging to identify hues at a glance.
Colors mix together easily and stay in solution, they apply easily, and while they do dry a bit lighter than you might expect if you're using professional-grade, they aren't too bad. They diffuse nicely, so wet into wet techniques have a really nice soft subtle effect.
After allowing everything to dry overnight, colors reactivate easily from a premixed form, and stay fairly consistent. Able to glaze colors over existing layers without much, if any, reactivation. Even really light glazes that are mostly water don't seem to disturb prior layers if they're allowed to fully dry.
These are fun. I keep forgetting to take notes, bc I become absorbed in just painting, or trying out different colors, or doing different mixes.
Able to mix a clean skintone from several diff colors. Able to do some gentle wet into wet on the kimono, and plan on continuing the pattern and developing it further once these base layers dry.
They don't get overly soupy. They granulate just right. They play nice with wet into wet. You can layer them, do surface design, glaze them, do wet into wet techniques- they handle quite well. The paint will get used up really quickly due to the weird chicklet design, but the paints themselves are decent quality.
Compared to Meiliang, MIYA, and Schpirerr Farben:
Best Pan solution: Schpirerr Farben
Funnest Pan Solution: Superior
Best actual watercolors in the set: Meiliang
Most disappointing: MIYA
Pros and Cons:
Pros:
These are so much fun!
Great for students who have limited space for storage, but can make space for painting- it folds down compact
The colors themselves aren't bad at all, and the optical brighteners are minimal- I didn't even have to reink this piece
Colors handle quite well, and are up to most watercolor techniques- i haven't tried them all, but they didn't throw any issues
Colors dry fairly bright, saturated, and brilliant
Pans are nice and wide, easy to get a brush in without damaging surrounding paints
Wide color selection to choose from
Cons:
The paints seem to get used up fast, and shrink when you add water, and crack over time, so this is a somewhat delicate palette.
Superior DOESNT SEEM to sell refills for this palette, so when you use up your favorite colors, it's going to become increasingly hard to use this set
While you COULD pour and smooth your favorite w/c into this set, I'm not sure how well that would work or how well they'd stay in, esp since this set would see a lot of wear and tear from folding and travel
They take up a lot of space and aren't really great for travel, perse
Very little mixing space
Palette cannot support its own weight, so be careful when moving it while open
Pallete should not be closed until the pans have had a chance to dry, otherwise they'll leak and damage surrounding paints
Not a lot of room for color mixing, so I recommend providing your own mixing palette
The Verdict:
Not bad at all! The gimmick is a lot of fun, and an improvement on the fan format they had earlier. I REALLY want to see Superior offer refill chicklets- I checked Amazon and AliExpress- if you know where they sell the refills in the US, please let me know. Refillability would give this palette an extended life. Pans are removable, so you can move them around to suit you. This isn't really a space-saving palette when fully unfolded, it's 9"x12" and not self-supporting, so it's going to need table space. I would also recommend not using this for plein air painting (one of the selling points on AliExpress), as this palette is not self-supporting, should not be shut until it's dried, and takes up a lot of space. This could be a great watercolor gift for a younger artist, or a fun treat for yourself. Superior often thinks out of the box when it comes to watercolor, and I'm excited to see what more they have in store!
