Dainayw 48 Watercolor Paints
Shrink wrapped plastic
Cardboard packaging
Plastic wrapper inside contains the plastic-wrapped watercolor postcards and metal palette
Metal palette is ok, basically the same as I use for my daily driver palette
Included brushes aren't bad either. Pretty standard golden taklon synthetic brushes
Halfpans are BRIGHT
These are definitely NOT the Superior Master Level watercolors I thought they might be, maybe Seamiart? It'll be interesting to try to unravel who made these.
Swatching on Blick Studio Cottonrag Watercolor Paper:
Colors are vibrant, but the color tone is very even, flat and muted. No granulation, a LOT of very bright, neon colors. This set is probably dye-based, thus, probably very light fugitive.
Lifting:
Almost everything lifts uniformly, which is pretty indicative of cheaper, dye-based paints.
Color Mixing:
Atomic:
These mix pretty easily and the colors are fairly saturated, but they do feel flat. It's pretty easy to find the primaries (since there are a lot of optical brighteners in the mix)
Optical:
Decent at optical color mixing, although there are harsh lines towards the edges of the under stripes.
Wet Into Wet:
While colors go down bright and vibrant, they fade out into nothing in all the water. Gives kind of a tie-dye effect, but pretty similar to other cheap dye-based watercolors
Testing out their paper and brushes:
Their paper is kinda a joke. It's like painting on packing paper or light-colored cardboard. Not terrible, but definitely not good. Not a watercolor postcard I would recommend for people interested in watercolor postcards.
The flat is...fine. A stiffer flat. Definitely usable.
The round is VERY drippy- water control is really important with this brush. It's also really stiff.
I glanced at the reviews on Amazon, and it's weird how positive they are, and how many people refer to these as their go to watercolors.
Pros:
The price is very appealing, and frankly, you could just gut the watercolors and the palette would still be a fair price
The brushes are ok- a lot better than the pack in brushes included in most cheap sets
Cons:
The paints are low-quality, cheap, dye-based watercolors. They're going to fade quickly, and lose saturation in water quickly.
The paper is a joke. It would have been better if they didn't include it, because it's not really a good representation of watercolor paper, and someone might be tempted to buy a better paper if this weren't included
The Verdict:
I've reviewed a lot of dye-based cheap watercolors during the Student Grade Showdown- with the good, you get the bad. I find them uninspiring and boring, but they may be a fun fit for you and how you paint- it's really just a matter of what you want from the paints.
