Hey Artnerds!

How has your week been?  It feels like once we hit Back to School, the time just flies!  It's about to fly even faster as we zoom into fall!

Upcoming Shows:

Cartoon Crossroads Columbus- October 6th-9th- https://www.cartooncrossroadscolumbus.org/I'll be part of two programs at Cartoon Crossroads Columbus- cohosting a make a minicomic workshop with Pranas Naujokaitis, and part of a panel on webcomics on Sunday.

Andouille Festival- October 14th-16th- https://www.andouillefestival.com/

Louisiana Book Festival- October 29- http://louisianabookfestival.org/ I'll be presenting a short panel about 7" Kara and signing books!

What I've Been Working on This Week:

Coloring Book:

We've got the book MOSTLY laid out, but there are still several things to tweak before we can print it.  I'm currently working on a couple possible cover designs and an interior cover- the goal is to get them penciled, inked, and scanned this week, because even if they don't cut it as cover stock, I would still like to include the lineart in the book!

Cover Version A

The text would be in the upper left.

Cover Version B:

The text would be in the center

Interior Cover:

Text would possibly go around the perimeter.Which do you like best?

Friday's Livestream:

I'd hoped that Friday's livestream would be more watercolor questions and demonstrations, but we ended up mostly swatching paints and testing out Etchr's new cellulose watercolor block.

In case you missed it, you can watch it as a VOD here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D5M35LQ-rogDuring the rest of August and September, I'm returning to (hopefully) weekly Friday night livestreams.  During October, I'll be pretty busy doing shows, so while I may livestream from the shows a bit, I probably won't make it to Friday night streams, but I hope by November, I'll be back in action!

Fall Art Squad Advanced:

We're changing a few things about Art Squad, and introducing an Advanced session once a month for more serious artists looking to learn new skills and build their portfolios.  I won't be joining Art Squad for the younger artist meetups, but I'm looking forward to going back to what I really enjoy and working on my own portfolio and sketchbook.

Chapter 9 Pencils

Still working on penciling Chapter 9- getting one page a day done until the chapter has been penciled.  It's slow, often boring work, and I'm making corrections as I go, but it will result in a stronger chapter!

Making Art a Habit in the Mailing List

For the Studio Mailing List, Joseph and I are working on a series about how to make art a habit in your life.  I would be more than happy to share those 'posts' here- unless yall are already on the mailing list, and would prefer I not double up?So far we've got:

"Make art a habit"    I hereby dub thee an ARTIST

“I’m too busy to make art”    Artist's most common excuse

“I need supplies for my art project”    Art without two pennies to rub together

“I don’t know where to start on my art project”    Don't bite off more than you can draw

“I don’t feel like making art today”    Mood is a thing for cattle

“I’m ready to make art, but my collaborator isn’t”    When your friend is artblocking you

“Another artist already made a better version of my idea”    Maybe you aren't the bestDo you have any stories or suggestions about how YOU've made art a habit in your life?  Please send them in!At some point, I'd also like to do a series of videos/video essays/tutorials on this topic, because it's one I dearly love- maybe once I get past October's con crush.

In the Mail:

Molotow Sketcher Markers- someone on Youtube compared these waterbased markers to Copic, but from what I've seen, they're more comparable to the OLO markers.  Since I had so much fun reviewing the OLO markers, I used Patreon funds to order a set of the Sketcher markers to check out!

Jackson's was having a watercolor sale, so I took advantage and ordered a few things I've been meaning to check out!

Schmincke's Haze watercolors

A Gallo Watercolors

Isaro watercolors

The Watercolor Crash Course has wrapped up!  All seven installments are now live to the public!  Those of you who checked it out during Early Access- thank you!   If you'd like to learn how to use watercolor, you can check out the playlist.
