Unboxing:

Cardboard packaging

Tape dots are my enemy

Packaging was just the box and the palette

The Palette:

Palette is kinda large and chonky- not really pocket size, kinda sorta purse-sized.  However, it's the insides that count.

Need to remember to maybe do a big travel watercolor palette overview?

Inside:

The Swatch Test:

Looking for:

Optical Brighteners

Granulation

Opacity

How the colors wash out

Liftability

Colors lightened up quite a bit when spritzed

No real opacity, not even with the white

The black granulates, but no other colors really have any granulation, even when we should be seeing granulation

Colors rush to fill areas that are indicative of dye-based watercolors

Lift Test:

Everything kinda mixed the same

Color Mixing:

These seem to get used up kinda fast

Not Preactivating allows for better color control

Can mix some decent colors, especially like misty purples, but I think we'd be better served by not including the white (it's basically transparent) and including a burnt sienna instead.  If you buy this set, you may want to sub it out.

The color mixing area is pretty limited, and I'm not really sure how this palette WANTS you to hold it

Colors go down like they should have some granulation but dry relatively uniform- pink is the most interesting color here.

Can glaze colors on top of each other

The Mud Test:

While wet:

Colors go down misty and blend out well.  Dots of color diffuse.

Comparable Watercolors:

Schipererr Farben/Superior

Van Gogh Watercolorsnacks Palette

Superior Folding Palette

Paul Rubens Travel Palette

Mont Marte Watercolor Palette

Meiliang Pigments

Mungyo

Mondo Llama

Arteza

Meeden Watercolors

Sakura Koi

Pros:

These seem to be superior watercolors, and I really like superior watercolors.  It also means if you like this style of travel palette, you can pop in Superior Student Grade watercolors to either refill or replace some of the colors

The kit itself is handy and has most of what you need- a pencil, a water4brush, mixing surfaces

The paints can be easily rearranged to suit your own preferences

Cons:

While the paints are good, the color selection, to me, a watercolor illustrator, is lacking.  It is definitely bold, I don't know about brave, but it would be a challenge to mix good greys and browns, and challenging to mix a variety of skin tones and hair colors.  If you like to paint people, even cartoony people, this set isn't going to facilitate your needs- but the other set, which has slightly different colors, might prove to be an easier mixing palette.

The white in this set is absolutely useless.

A lot of space dedicated to kinda duplicate colors- like the warm yellow and the light orange, or the two reds- not enough difference b/w them to justify both, and could have been replaced with other bold colors.

The palette itself feels cheap and flimsy, moves around while you try to mix colors, the mixing palette has very low walls and is kinda flimsy- it just feels kinda low budget.

The accessories, while passable, are also just kinda eh?  THe waterbrushes are standard Superior waterbrushes, my waterbottle totally sealed, and while the sticker was cute, it wasn't beneficial or useful- it was just cute.
