Jambalaya Festival Poster, Earth Day, and Youtube Woes-Patreon Newsletter April 24th (Patreon)
Content
Hey there Artnerds! Long time no chat! It's hard to believe it's been A MONTH since my last Patreon update.I really missed you guys and wanted to update more, but I've been busy and migrainey. I've finally wrapped up a couple of long-term projects and wanted to check in with yall!
A lot has happened, so I will share a little smattering of what's been going on.
Make Art a Habit Mailing List
I'm announcing a new weekly art motivation mailing list for my artist friends struggling to make art!
Are you an aspiring artist who wants to make art a habit but struggles with procrastination, perfectionism, lack of resources, or low motivation? Do you feel like you’re not good enough or that someone else has already done it better? Do you wish you had more time, energy, and inspiration to create?
If you answered yes to any of these questions, this mailing list is for you. Every week, I’ll email you with motivations to overcome some of the many plights I've faced and hear echoed from other art nerds. I'd love to help you overcome your art blocks and access your creativity.
The Make Art a Habit mailing list is not about teaching you how to draw, paint, or sculpt. It’s about helping you become an artist in mindset and action. It’s about showing you that art is not a talent but a skill that can be learned and improved. It’s about empowering you to make art that matters to you and the world.
Finishing up the Jambalaya Festival Poster:
So yall might remember me mentioning the Jambalaya Festival poster a while back. I've finally finished the tee shirt and festival poster!
This isn't the final version, but I feel like I can probably share it with yall.
This project has gone back and forth since February, and has been really time consuming. There's been a lot of back and forth regarding revisions and even a whole redraw. That said, I got word today that the poster has gone off to the printer, so I'm really looking forward to seeing how the finished tee shirt and poster turn out.
If you asked me how I landed this job, the closest I can figure is they saw my name attached to the art classes at the Gonzales Public Library. I'll share the whole story behind this project with Patrons once the Festival is over.Swamp Tour:
For my birthday (way back in March) I wanted to take a swamp tour and get some photos of the Louisiana irises blooming. A string of inclement weather meant our tour kept getting rescheduled, but we were finally able to hop on a boat and glide down Bayou Segnette in mid April. I really enjoyed the swamp tour, and would like to go on another in Jean Lafitte later this year.
Ponchatoula Strawberry Festival:
This is an unusual sort of Louisiana festival, as it sprawls all over Ponchatoula. Yall know I had to pose in front of the giant strawberry.
Art in Progress:
Now that I'm finished with my part of the Jambalaya Festival poster, I can work on personal projects again. My Louisiana Food prints do well at shows, so I wanted to add more local and regional favorites!Andouille Sausage
Pecan pie
Zapps Cajun Crawtator Chips
I'm also working on a Hubig pie illustration, although I admit I don't really like them! They're well known in the area, and have quite a fan following, but I prefer Randazzo's hand pies.
Youtube Issues:
I mentioned this on Twitter, Discord, and my Community tab on Youtube, but just in case you missed it:
Some of yall have let me know recently that Youtube is not allowing you to turn on notifications for my channel, stating that you can't do that with content made for kids. Youtube also seems to be unsubscribing people. My channel is set to a case-by-case basis where I select the age rating for each update independently- it is NOT set to For Kids, and I'm trying to resolve this with Youtube. If you can send me screencaps or video clips of these issues, it would be a huge help. I've been passing them along to Youtube, and while I have spent years trying to resolve this with no change, I haven't given up.
These ridiculous issues make your support here on Patreon even more meaningful to me. Thank you so much for having my back all this time. Fighting Youtube can be so discouraging.
Trying Some Things with Instagram:
Since Youtube is so frustrating and Twitter is in the process of dying its slow and painful death, I've turned my attention back to Instagram. I received the enlightened suggestion to link my tutorials in my stories, and I loved that idea! This allows me to also curate tutorials and reviews into highlights, and should hopefully make it a bit easier for someone looking for painting or art supply ideas to find them! If you follow me on Instagram, you should definitely check your stories for updates and behind the scenes, as I'm trying to make it a point to use Insta more.
Food Truck Friday:
Last Friday, I tried something a little different! One of the local churches organizes a seasonal food truck social- Food Truck Friday, and this was the first time they opened up vendor spaces, so I bought one. I'm trying to figure out my outdoor display so I can start selling at the Farmer's Market and hopefully earn more money at my events.
Earth Day Illustration:
I've already shared the printable lineart with you guys, so if you missed it, look below- I've linked it for Patrons again!
The video tutorial is up, but due to the nature of YouTube and timelapse, it goes by VERY quickly. I would love to do a written Backer Exclusive tutorial for yall- please let me know if that's something you'd like to see!
Back to working on comics:
