I wanted to see if there was anything real behind the hate for this guy... Pitchfork gave Benson Boone a 3.7 rating for his album "American Heart". That just seems blatantly hateful especially with some of the excerpts that have been shared to socials. See what I decided to rate this album and let me know your thoughts :)

Thank you Juke for always giving artists a chance, you are very special 🥹

I really loved his album Fireworks & Rollerblades. He has such a powerful voice on that album and his lyrics is great too. Don't understand the hate, he is just being himself and ppl can't handle that i guess.

The criticisms outside of his music are frivolous. He's hot, talented, and seems like a genuinely nice guy— so of course that annoys people lol. That said, he and his team wrote and recorded this entire album in two weeks... and I do think it feels rushed in terms of production, lyrics, and song structure. I also think he needs more time to figure himself out artistically so that his songs feel less generic and connect with listeners on a deeper level. Nothing here truly hooked me. I sincerely hope that he works with some different writers/producers and takes his time with the next album, because I think he can do much better.

I don’t think rating this 3,7 like Pitchfork did is fair at all. I do feel like benson has a lot of potential and i really like some songs. However as an album it does feel a bit generic and lacks in structure. But not to the extent that it would earn him such a low score. I think benson is in the ”figuring out” stage of his career to as of who he is as a musician. Unfortunately because of the huge hit ”beautiful things” was he’s in that stage very publicly and getting unnecessary hate because of that. A lot of artist has that stage but when they are lesser known. I think his voice is amazing and he is a genuine person with talent. I hope he keeps working on putting on music! As for this album i have a fee songs i will add to the playlists a few i wont, which is not uncommon at all. Thanks for keeping an open mind as always

I really like this album. Ive actually saved every song and in my opinion, it's a none skip album. I also loved his first album, Fireworks and Rollerblades. Love this reaction 🥰

I'm just gonna throw some fuel on the fire here, but you really should start giving a rating to every album you react to. Just sayin’ 🙉🙊 I mean, I actually liked this

Jade

I agree with the critics this time unfortunately 💀

I really enjoy hearing your commentary. It’s insightful and grounded, and you give everything a chance. Your heart really showed through in this reaction. I think it’s an OK album, nothing particularly specially in the back half, but you made me think and reflect on the songs a bit more as I listened to you react. Thank you for that!

Liam Mcfarlane

Sure, he’s not doing anything groundbreaking here but it’s certainly not the worst album I’ve ever heard. Also, I feel like as a society we need to get past the notion that every album/song needs to be ‘the best’. If we look at music the same way we look at movies - sure, an Oscar-bait movie is good now and again for some good storylines and performances but if every movie was like that it would get tiring pretty quickly, we also need the trashy movies like Mean Girls, 50 First Dates, 40 Year Old Virgin etc to balance everything out. If everything is incredible then it makes incredible boring, you need the baseline to determine the peaks and troughs. I need the “moonbeam ice cream” and the “shake it off” because if every album was an Adele album I’d lose my mind 😂

I will say if you look on genius and some other places he is credited as song writer. He’s talked about writing his songs so I’m not sure why Spotify didn’t put his name on them also but he did right his songs with Evan and Jason.

Thank you for this! I don’t understand the hate he's receiving and genuinely worry about his wellbeing—I can’t even begin to imagine how it must feel for him. The guy really does need a break from it all: he’s young and extremely talented, and he writes his own songs. Sure, it’s not really my cup of tea and some of the songs feel a bit formulaic, but it's a decent album. I certainly couldn’t do what he does—I wish I could—and if I’d been able to produce a body of work like this, I’d be so proud of it. Not every album has to revolutionise the industry, and critics putting that sort of pressure on artists is immensely damaging—I'm sure it would make artists think twice about putting themselves out there and releasing their work, which is very worrying. I really do hope he has support—I’ve seen interviews and he seems genuine, decent, progressive, and thoughtful. I really appreciate you calling out the hate and criticism for what it is, and for giving the album a listen on its own terms. Some of it isn’t for me, but it’s still good and Benson deserves every success with it. I saved ‘Mystical Magical’ to my playlist—that’s a gem! I loved ‘Momma Song’ too, because I’m unashamedly a momma’s boy—she does so much for me and is my favourite person in the world, and I love hearing someone else feel the same way about their Mum too.

This is a very big downgrade from the first album.

I don't think it's a masterpiece but it's not bad either. I feel like people just like being mean to certain people. Ei. Benson and Katy Perry.

I just love the tones in Benson’s voice. He has so much talent and I don’t think he’s fully aware of just how good he actually is. He loves to perform, he’s an athlete, and he’s still figuring out who he is and what direction he wants to go. Meanwhile he’s just out there entertaining us all and being funny as hell. He may decide to act, he may decide to keep singing, he may decide to do something else with his life. But there’s no denying his confidence or his genuine tongue-in-cheek enjoyment of life. For me, it was hearing his acoustic In The Stars on The Wishbus that cemented his natural vocal talent. It was moving and beautiful and I’m invested in whatever he does in the future ♥️.
