NOTE: I was (and still am) taking some cough medicine that apparently made me seem like I am lost, but I swear I am okay. I'm sorry if I seem a little loopy.

In this video I was NOT expecting these styles of music from these ladies.

Maybe it's just me, but both of these songs have a failry stark difference in style if I compare them to the other songs I have now listened and reacted to. Now...as someone who likes to believe that they have no genre barrier, I was pleasently surprised.

Manners has such a weight to it that made me feel like I was in my grunge era. The lyrics though didn't reflect that though. These lyrics are super uplifting and are something I would need to get me through the week. Lol.

Black Hole takes a whole new turn in what I like to call hardcore punk. This was blazing fast and in your face, but Saiki's voice was like a clear voice of reason through all of it. I was just so blown away!

This is proof that BAND-MAID can play in ANY genre. mic drop

Both of these songs are from their latest album ... I think ... along with Influencer, it is the most recent material you have heard from our MAIDs. While you can draw a parallel to the older stuff it is very different (no, not the song :p ). The band has come a long way and listening to their music out of chronological order can be very ... confusing ;) . Yes, the studio version of Manners belongs on YouTube ... where inevitably people will ask for this :p .

Anyone else have the Blackhole analysis chop off on Miku's Lalalala :) I have heard a few folks refer to Manners as "Stoner Rock, good Stoner Rock... with lyrics". The grove does have that feel from the early 80's for me, up updated. Let me open my genre list... punk, no... grunge, no... Band-Maid, yes. Much easier that way.

Bandmaidfanatl

Yeah, just after Black Hole analysis starts. I think upload cut off early.

Spadeas

Yep. Manners and Black Hole are from Unseen World (latest album) Influencer is from Unleash (latest EP). From now On is also from Unleash btw.

Your reactions (and facial expressions) make me giggle - please don't take that in a bad way, haha. This intro for "Manners" is an extended intro for some live performances and it does have a unique, cool, swaggery feel to it, for sure. Love, love, love your immediate reaction when "Black Hole" began - many reactors have had that exact expression on their faces, which is why I've said this song is not for everyone. To me, "Black Hole" is blissful chaos held barely in check by Saiki's vocals. Great reaction, love. 💗✌️

I see no one has addressed the whole J-LOD thing. Please note that this "live" was recorded during the COVID lockdowns with no audience (2021). J-LOD was an effort by the Japanese government to buoy the arts and offer grant money to keep artists afloat during this difficult time. J-LOD (Japan Content Localization and Distribution) was the effort to fund video projects that would have worldwide appeal and promote Japan. There was a requirement to qualify ... that the video submitted must be a minimum of 5 minutes .... and since they did not really have any songs that long, they simply put 2 together :) .

I get more 70's classic rock vibes from Manners, think Eagles-Victim of Love... Black Hole I can see the Hardcore Punk comparison. I also get Speed & Black Metal vibes from it though, especially with the intro riff & tremolo picking.

NittPicc Reacts

Okay! Yeah! I actually have been listening to the Eagles a lot recently mainly because I’m a huge Don Henley fan. Lol. I can hear that now that you put that in my head.

Charles Coleman

Sorry you are feeling a bit off, but honestly, you sound and look fine. I do hope those nasty allergies leave you alone, soon!

Prutgardin

Lots of 'Gurru Gurru' in Black Hole ;) hehe

Charles Coleman

It's actually funny to see you struggle to find the words to explain what you are hearing and seeing- but not in a bad way. It happens to us all! This is what they do. Band Maid doing Band Maid things. They are their own genre and whatever they do, they are going to do it well. We just expect to have our minds blown and our preconceived notions shattered to our ultimate thorough amusement and joy, po! It is the Religion of the Pigeon, Po! LOL!

Charles Coleman

The lyrics to this song are their mission statement, po!~

Juan San

Exact!. That's what usually happens with Band Maid, you don't know what to expect when they release a song. What's more, you don't know what to expect throughout the song!. They are tremendously versatile when it comes to the musical genres of the rock family, but they are also tremendously original when it comes to the development of their song writing. They never tire of throwing curveballs. In terms of rhythm, this Manners - Black Hole combo traces the extremes of their music quite well from Stoner Rock to Punk Metal more or less. In terms of complexity between Bestie and Giovanni, for example, they cover the entire possible field between Soft Pop and Progressive Rock. No matter what coordinates you choose, they always have something to offer in their pop - prog - rock - metal - jazz - grunge - blues - whatever... music. Take care NittPicc!

To me, these 2 songs are a showcase of Misa and Akane. For Manners, it's interesting that Misa took lead and Kanami mostly played rhythm. Misa got to show off her groove...... We got the simplest ever drum fill Akane has ever played ( haha )! For Black Hole, did you notice Miku's evil smirk right at the start of the song? It's like she's thinking " now we're gonna smack you and shake you like a ragdoll " ! .... Oh, and "Band-Maid" is a genre.

Glen Kelley

First, great reaction. Second, the band talked a lot about the "Unseen World" in an interview ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JKvQ34ZYT9A - be sure to turn on CC) and they talked about what "Manners" means for them. For me, Manners reminds me of 60's 70's rock - maybe James Game, SRV, Rod Stewart's 1971 hit "I know I'm losing you" - live version ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uP4CEPaiAzU ). "Back Hole" (220 BPM) is just them flexing. Lyrics co-written with Stephen Hawkins.

Xenos

Your initial reaction almost perfectly matches mine lol, just completely shocked when I first heard it

Bert Speckels

Blackhole is 220 BPM, you were absolutely correct 👍

Glen Kelley

He visited Miku, while she was flying around, from the event horizon

Glenner7

Cool reaction! I'm glad you were able to pull the end of your video out from the black hole... You had me in stitches at the start of Black Hole - I thought your chair was going to spin you out into orbit! I believe the maids identified this tempo to Akane as "Hell". So, you may have heard that Band-Maid has a song called About Us (which many of us are counting on you discovering soon), but it has seemed to me since Manners came out that it could just as easily have been entitled "About Us", as it tells the story of their aims and their progress so far. On the Limited Edition version of the Unseen World album, there are two discs, with one representing the progress so far and the other representing moving forward, and the same version of Manners appears on each disc. As you said, constant surprises are the keystone of Band-Maid songs.

Glenner7

The Unseen World interview you linked to in your comment is great. I love it when they talk seriously about their music. And Saiki made Kanami cry, so there's that.

Bill Hallisey

Princess Nittpicc, I do hear a little bit of that congestion in your voice. Please get better soon. I love reaction to Band-Maid music. It reminds me of my first few times of listening to these SO TALENTED young women. Manners/Black Hole was one of my early favorites and it still is. These two songs together immediately shows their musical versatility. I swear Black Hole will leave you sweating at the end!

Eno L

I'm sure you already know this, but I'll just put it out there... "About Us" was a letter that they wrote to their fans. As in, about their relationship with their fans.

Mike Holmes

There's a lot of R&B in Manners throughout, too, if you think about it. To say nothing of the ending. In Black Hole, there's some ska in there. As we Madiacs often say... the genre is Band-Maid. What they remind you of is EVERYTHING. :) Oh, and by the way, you said to turn them up... yes... like some of the best music out there, Band-Maid is better when LOUD!

Mike Holmes

A continuation of Domination... their mission to take over the world continues... neverending!

Juan Lee

Great react NittPicc, just joined the Patreon club so this is very cool :-) Glad you enjoyed Miku's vocal sound effects on Manners (one of my favorite parts!!), the Miku Sound Machine (as it's called) came into prominence on the Conqueror album where there was no Miku song but she's all over the album with vocal sound effects....It's fabulous. Black Hole is banger and an exclamation point to the Unseen World, kind of a reminder after wandering all over the Genre board that they can still bang it out with the best of them...btw, check Rinne from Conqueror almost a companion song to Black Hole.

Juan Lee

Oh I and as I'm typing this the Maid's are preparing to do their Day Of Maid show in Tokyo, reviving it for this year after a 2 year absence. The Day Of Maid shows are somewhat legendary in Band Maid lore, as the Maid's see this as THEIR day and REALLY bring an extra intensity to these shows, and these are reports from long time Band Maid fans who all have reported the Maid's really, really "Just Bring It" of these Day Of Maid shows......seems they really take the day seriously :-)

Glenner7

You're right, Juan, and of course what did they do? They started the show with Black Hole.

Rick

The genre that Band Maid is, depends on what song you are listening to. Manners is like groove rock or stoner rock. Black Hole is like speed metal-punk. They could probably do a great Bluegrass song if they wanted.

Bekka NoyB

Manners is top tier Band Maid! ♥

I read, an interview of Kanami on ‘Black Hole’ (I can’t site the source I would have to look for it) in which this was to represent the chaos of COVID. Unfortunately that time was hard on Kanami especially being away from her band mates. I think (this is me) that ‘Black Hole’ was the void each of us were experiencing being apart from other people in our daily life.
