This was interesting since I feel like I was taken back in time through BAND-MAID's older works.

When I recorded "Don't Let Me Down," I immediately noticed that this was older. The sound was more simplistic than that of what they have now. I then realized that "Real Existance" was from around the same time frame. The difference here is that I got to hear Kanami and Misa actually showcase their abilities. This was exciting and I imagine it was exciting to hear for the first time as a fan of their works!

I really liked seeing the blossoming of the band in this one.

...I am sticking to the motto: "Love Maid is best band maid."

You are correct, they did not write the songs on New Beginnings. However, Miku did write the lyrics for "I Can't Live Without You," which is just as spicy as DLMD, though a little bit more subtle.

Tiny Hato trivia time. Tiny hat was actually worn my MISA first (see Maid in Japan album cover), and was retired after New Beginnings. The whereabouts of Tiny Hato since then is shrouded in mystery...some think it is in Hamburg under the protection of Pillar-san, but this is mere conjecture.

You will understand the "energy" when you watch the whole concert. This song was at the end of the concert, and they were on a big high from Freedom right before this.

Hey Princess NittPicc - loved the reaction - you are correct that this is "old" Band-Maid when they had little creative control and were not writing their own songs. This song was written by Miwa Sasaki & Koji Goto - I think the members of the band would have had some input into their individual parts - like Akane's drum pattern, Misa Bass "solo" and Kanami's guitar solo - but they were definitely being "managed" at this point in their career. I think it's time for you to experience some more "old" Band-Maid but actually hear the first song that Kanami wrote that was accepted by the record company - it comes from the same album, Brand New Maid, and is the last track on it - "Alone". Kanami composed and arranged the music and Miku wrote the lyrics with help from Saiki. There is an official music video on Youtube but no official live version. It's a killer song and shows the seeds of potential that we all now know bloom in their later works.

I never really liked the MV, because it seems to me that the management was leaning a lot into the sexuality of the women. This ends soon, though, when Band-Maid starts to rule their own empire. Interesting to me, though, is the fact that these lyrics have several dual language puns (a phrase means one thing in English and something different in Japanese). I wonder if this is where Miku got the idea to do this in her lyrics, and she does it a lot now. I believe the Kanamai you were hearing in the live version was actually her on the backing track playing a synth. I can't hear this on the studio version.

Bandmaidfanatl

There is, however, the "alternate" OMV if you can find it out there in the web verse...

Bandmaidfanatl

Perhaps this will be the six Indiana Jones movie...Indiana Jones and the Quest for Tiny Hato...but given the last 2, I hope not, unless they bring Shia back for the lead role.

My Opinion, the difference in sound (besides time and tons of practice/work) is a couple things. Miku has gotten so much better in her playing that they can expand her parts and fill in the soundscape. Kanami plays the rhythm parts in the studio recordings for the albums. Don't know if that is still happening or not going forward. Different instruments sound, well, different... as you know better than I. Kanami is still playing her Addictone in the vid, but is on her PRS live. Miku goes from her Rickenbacker (I think it is) to Zemaitis. MISA had I think a Squire but moved to her Black Cloud. And Akane (beside the disappearance of the fan fav tiny hat RIP 2018 😭) is well, Akane. And goes from Sonor to Tama. All of that plus all then energy. Having seen them 4 separate times live, Live Band-Maid really is the best Band-Maid.

Another great reaction/Band Maid Sunday! Thank you for your efforts and love for our Ladies! Did you notice that in the OMV, Misa is playing a 4 string bass and in the OLV she is playing her Black Smoker 5 string. Also, yes, the energy of them live is noticeable. Wait until you get to see them live live! Another fun thing about live Band Maid is all the fun they have. Of course, it takes a lot of hard to work to make it look easy, but they do have fun on stage.

Charles Coleman

If you are looking for more "old" Band Maid, may I suggest "Non Fiction Days" "Freedom - Official Live video" Also, "Before Yesterday" the video of which features their first visit to the US in Seattle in 2016. "Alone" is still old Band Maid, but it is the very first song they wrote all by themselves. Kanami (aka Mincho) was writing a lot of songs even from the start, but the record company kept rejecting them. But the band, especially Saiki, kept encouraging her to keep writing and we see the end result.

Charles Coleman

If you want to see Misa "unleashed" so to speak, if you have Band Maid Prime, go check out a video called "Silent Band Maid - Don't Laugh" I think it's the very first video they posted on Prime, so it will be at the back of the list on videos. Click "All" and find the last one. It's only a minute and a bit, but it's very funny. Misa is hilarious!

Ok, so in the live version, Saiki lost her shoes after jumping into the ladies section of the crowd...... She comes back to sing, and Misa pokes fun at her for being barefoot. Misa dances around Saiki looking at her feet then they both share a moment kneeling down together. .... Now, during Kanami's solo, Saiki got her shoes back and was putting them on. You'll see Kanami looking back during her solo to check if Saiki is ready or whether she should extend the solo to give Saiki more time to put her shoes on. ... Whilst these girls are fooling around, Miku gets serious and tries to keep the song going where it should...

Eno L

In Moratorium live, Miku's whisper directly into my ears always sends shivers down my spine.

Excellent comparative video!. Real Existence (and while we're at it, Don't Let Me Down) are from 2015's New Beginning, a strangely eclectic album. It almost seems like their Production Label hadn't decided what to do with them yet. It has excellent rock songs like "Freezer", "Thrill" or "Shake That", mixed with others that are more predominantly Pop Punk. A poppy song in the chorus like "Beauty and the Beast" has the most decidedly metal bridge and solo of the band's entire production. Or for example the "Price of Pride" bridge which is totally Jazz. All very strange. They had no part in either the songwriting or the lyrics, their music was still far from being accepted by the production company. Then came "Alone" in 2016, the first song entirely produced by Band Maid, and from there to now no one told them more where they could or could not go. A couple of details: In the video you can see Akane's old style playing drums (like Animal, from the Muppets), she had to change it because she injured her back. The current one (as seen in the live version) is much more technical and energy-saving Saiki does wear heels in that live. She lost them into the crowd on the previous song, "Freedom" (that was an epic version, Zepp Tokyo 2018). Thank you!!

I'm with you for Miku's "what can I/wa kan ai", it's always the part of the song that I look forward to the most. Maybe it's because I've known and listened to the group every day for four years, I've seen the documentaries and interviews many times, but Miku ended up becoming my favorite I admit, so hearing her talk about love (Ai in Japanese) in her sweet voice, I melt.

M.and.PofB-M

If you see recently live of REAL EXISTENCE from Spin-Off with VERY POWERFUL Saiki Voice. You will be amazed how ….you know right? Not gonna say it. Hope you will see them live soon. Maybe you have more chance then ME, bcuz Our MAIDS really like US. AUSTRALIA! Here, live here a bit SUCK!. (“You got only TWO Choice, ‘Save $’ & ‘Japan Go’, you are TRAPPEEEEDO”🤷🏻‍♀️- By Miku KOBATO).

Bandmaidfanatl

And let's not forget Saiki has a new instrument as well in the live. 😁

Bandmaidfanatl

I like the whisper too, but prefer Miku's vocal stylings in Why Why Why

Thanks again for continuing to react to Band-Maid and yes, LIve Maid is the best maid (you actually wrote "Love Maid best band-maid" :D

Charles Coleman

LOL! That was a very cool moment when Saiki went into the crowd and Miku had to finish the rest of the lyrics! LOL! But she nailed it!

I'm enjoying your journey into old Band Maid. It will be interesting when you get to "Alone" which as others have mentioned is their first song totally written by them. To me it definitely has a more sophisticated feeling versus the songs that were written for them. BTW, I love that you tap into your inner girly girl and aren't afraid to talk outfits and makeup.

Tay

We need “freedom” it has amazing interactions between members and it’s just perfect Great reaction as always

Yes, this is some very "old maid" :p . The instruments are also the giveaway. None of the girls had their sponsors yet. While Kanami had a good relationship with Addictone, her sponsor PRS would come on board in 2016. MIKU - (Rickenbacker) Zemaitis, MISA MISA MISA - (Fender) Black Cloud, Akane - (Sonor) Tama. I can't find any documentation that Saiki is sponsored by either Sennheiser or DPA but she has used both. Yes, MISA MISA MISA has a Hendrix decal on her bass ... but the other one says "Sweet Potato Pie" The whole shoeless thing is because this was recorded in an actual temple and taking off your shoes to enter is a sign of respect. The cameos of each girl are great but my favorite part is the MIKU smirk at the end ... like she knew something great was happening. ... so yeah, the latter is the infamous performance of the lost shoes ;) .

Eno L

Before yesterday is a little different from typical Band-Maid with a nostalgia like feel, but I absolutely love it!

Eno L

Ah yes, the melodic tongue roll... Very impressive... Too bad she doesn't do it often. Just like Saiki has the most beautiful falsetto voice but rarely goes into it.

Eno L

You're right, Akane used to play hunch backed and it wasn't good.

Eno L

The amps they use were different too, right?

Bill Hallisey

We're all on a journey WITH Band-Maid now. Boy, it's fun!!!!!

P in D

Yes, Blackstar. Now MIKU plays EVH and Kanami plays Mesa Boogie. MISA MISA MISA was playing orange but I understand she has switched on the most recent lives.

Bill Hallisey

Imagine going to a Band-Maid concert for the first time and experiencing that!

Bill Hallisey

NittPicc, If Miku's whisper got you, image how many guys melted right there!

So when I joined the Band Maid bandwagon in mid-2017, they hadn't really toured the US yet, I read a lot of the show reports from their domestic shows and Real Existence was at that point one of their signature songs. Oddly enough where Thrill was the big song from New Beginning in the US & Europe in Japan it was Real Existence that was the more popular New Beginning song. New Beginning also still had the "Twin Vocals" with Miku & Saiki trading off vocals within a song, actually if you really wanna hear the true of "Twin Vocals" give a listen to Maid in Japan (the first album, although some members have disowned it and refer to New Beginning as the 1st). Anyway it's been fun going down memory lane with you NittPicc......thank you for that :-)

If you want to hear just some straight up , pure hard rock, I recommend 2 tracks from the Unseen World cd - Flying High and Chemical Reaction. Kanami insisted on Akane playing a cow bell in Chemical Reaction, no sample or any other effect. Akane didn't own a cow bell, so she had to buy one. It really adds to the song. I believe I read it came about from a riff MISA sent to Kanami. In Flying High, Miku's cat scream really makes the song. I think you will enjoy both tracks. Both are highly underrated songs in my opinion.

Bill Whitaker

Sorry, I just realized Flying High is off of Conqueror, not Unseen World. At any rate, it is a pure rocker.

MrMette

Probably my favourite track that they have done before they wrote their own music. There are some other contenders, but I have always loved this one a lot and I can't say that about all of their early tracks. Edit: Btw, as far as Saiki's makeup goes I absolutely know nothing about makeup, but I noticed a bunch of Japanese bands where members had those colored streaks under their eyes (also check Toranoko Rammy, who have this but pushed to the extreme) so I looked it up and apparently it is a Japanese style called "Igari" and it is trying to mimic someone being drunk if I remember correctly. I just noticed it on so many people that I was curious and there was no way it was a coincidence and it wasn't a style.
