This one made my brain go burrrrrr...!

I tried so hard to cover as much as I possibly could, but I feel like I still missed so much. Honestly this song needs to be broken down by layers. I need everything in layers like a cake. Lol.

Anyway, I tried my best. I feel like I may have to come back to this one again sometime soon with a more detailed outlook on it!

P.S. The acoustic version...HOW CAN IT BE THAT PRETTY?!?!

It's funny watching Kanami in the acoustic version trying her hardest to avoid eye contact with Saiki, she stares over Saiki's left shoulder most of the time.

Jonas

Yes Kanami has perfect pitch, if you have time to watch (or react to it maybe) to their US tour documentary there is a scene where Miku is tuning a 12 string guitar using Kanami's perfect pitch as a tuner lol

Daniel Morgan

This one is in the top 5 Band-Maid songs of all time. Well, top 10

Bandmaidfanatl

I called the police the first time I heard this cause I was sure I was assaulted.

Glenner7

Right!?!! The first time through the MV, you really really (hontoni hontoni) looked like a deer caught in the headlights of a very fast moving train! As Jonas said, Kanami has perfect pitch - in the scene he described, Kanami looks up at Tony Visconti in answer to his question about her pitch and simply says "human tuner"!

Prutgardin

I know how you feel: I also just had a nap ;) hehe

Bandmaidfanatl

I have heard Miku and Saiki be off pitch. Kanami, vocally, never

Bandmaidfanatl

There is a live (COVID era) official on their channel with Dice as well, Day of Maid, 2021

I have a very strange relationship with this song, firstly, the first time I heard it, I couldn't help but think of other openings like those of Overlord for example (which works, because Kanami wrote a perfect anime opening song then), but I always had trouble hearing anything else. Then the acoustic version came along, and unfortunately, I was so blown away by the one that comes right after (Manner), that Different in acoustic is just a warm-up for my brain that will be satisfied every time by the following song ^^'. But to pay tribute to the acoustic version, can we talk about how much Saiki's voice is sublimated in this version, especially with Kanami in backing. And then there is still a certain flow and we sometimes wonder where she takes the time to breathe, and she doesn't even seem to force, like, ma'am, can you please leave a little talent and presence for the others lol. I would also add that seeing Kanami and Saiki, just the two of them, is always a pleasure, we know very well that Kanami appreciates these special moments, but we can see in the video that Saiki appreciates it too, whether it's in her look or smile.

Kanami's riffs in her anime proposals tend to be very "carnival of Venice", yes. Glory, Shambles, Protect You, have very catchy and showy riffs but I would really like to know your opinion on the riff of Sense, the opening of the anime Platinum End, in my opinion the most carnivalesque of them all. The song Different had the difficult mission of replacing Database, a composition by Man with a Mission, which had definitely won the hearts of Log Horizon fans. According to most fans of that anime, the girls were up to the challenge (Miku's lyrics contribute a lot to this success story). Kanami composed Don't be Long as an "etude" for the tasks that Miku had to carry out in this song. The acoustic version is a masterpiece of musical arrangement by the girl of the perfect pitch, Kanami. Here you can hear her reaching a very high treble voice but you would be amazed to hear her in the song Anemone (ZeppTokyo 2018) harmonizing Saiki's LOW VOICES (or in their new acousitc arrange of Coralium in Line Cube Shibuya 2024 BTW) . Gracias señorita!!!

Ah the infamous Kanami “Shut up”. You need to watch the Audio Commentary version where the rest of the band make fun of Kanami through the song with way she looks at Saiki, you also get to hear Misa talk a bit to

It's songs like this where watching the "White wall" instrument only MV helps a lot in understanding what goes on.

I am glad you watched the acoustic version of this. Of course, it's just so damn good. How the Hell does Kanami do this? And it's not just once in a blue moon, the girl never misses. I'm not sure I've ever heard a better composer in my life. For me, not being musically educated, I just focus on whether I like a song or not and maybe pick out some things I really enjoyed about it. But with Band Maid, there is so much more going on. The beauty of the acoustic show besides the obvious incredible arrangements and the soft, relaxing sounds and atmosphere, is the interaction between the members. There is a funny interchange between Saiki and Kanami right after the song finishes. And then there is the audio commentary versions of this show (in 4 parts, just like the regular videos) available on Band Maid Prime. These are very entertaining in their own right, very funny in most of it and a lovely look at how these members/friends interact with each other. The funniest part of these moments comes in part 2 of the audio commentaries. I will not spoil it, but pay attention for when they begin discussing what Mincho may have been in a previous life. Trust me on this. 🤣🤣

I swear the sections that follow "let's go it's showtime" have a bit of a wandering tempo. It gives me the impression that they're all playing as fast as they can - except they're staying in unison. Maybe they're just wandering slightly off the beat to give that effect. I can't tell. Different is part of a subgroup of songs in Band-Maid's catalog that have a particularly fast, chaotic sound. If you want to hear the first song they did in this style, check out Screaming. For more "I can't believe they did an acoustic version of this" songs, look at No God and HGK. Especially the latter, because the electric version is nuts. As long as I'm tossing out suggestions, a request: check out Giovanni, because that's also kinda brain-breaking. If you can find the "white room" instrumental version, do a two-fer - a lot of people feel the song is so dense that it's easier to hear what Kanami's doing without Saiki in the mix.

frantaf

Check acoustic version with commentary. It something like : "Here comes the moment when you say shut up" Kanami: "Wait, did I?" :)

Vlad the Maidiac

Unfortunately, there is no instrumental version of Different... It may be disassembled into tracks, Alan from Dicodec is recently doing it with some BAND-MAID songs. But no "official" instrumental version... yet?

Vlad the Maidiac

Of course it's "Shout out," but yes, they were making fun of Kanami that in reality she told Saiki to shut up 😂

Vlad the Maidiac

One of the very few cases when BAND-MAID played an encore. Saiki made a mistake the first time they performed Different at that OKYUJI, and in the end she asked all other members if they can try it again, to make it better this time. So, Different was performed twice that day.

Vlad the Maidiac

Really? I can remember one case when Saiki was off pitch, and it was when she sang X Japan classic "Endless Rain" accompanied by YOSHIKI on piano during his TV show. I was under impression that she just did not know the words well, or she did not know what YOSHIKI is going to play. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G15ndc2_eo8

Every time I listen to the MV, I'm always out of breath by the end, and I'm sitting on the couch. It's just so frenetically perfect.

Xenos

This was the song when I realized how much of a genius Kanami is as a composer. The first time I heard this song I thought it was just pure chaos and didn't really like it. A year later it's one of my absolute favorite Band-Maid songs. One thing I love is just listening and watching Kanami go absolutely nuts during pretty much *the entire song*. For a song with no actual guitar solo you get a lot of Kanami in this song. I also have been extremely lucky and have seen this both original and acoustic live even though I've only been to 3 B-M concerts.

Bandmaidfanatl

Yes, I said I have heard them off pitch, just never Kanami.

Bandmaidfanatl

Kanami knows. She just didn't again in March.😁

picti_pixie

Your immediate reaction to the chaos gave me a flashback to your Black Hole reaction...🤣🤍✌️

Charles Coleman

Well said. As much as we all love Saiki - and we do! - Her incredible singing sometimes hides the equally incredible instrumental work going on. The Band of Maids Channel has some nice videos of just their instrumentals as well.

Bill Whitaker

I really love this song. It is one of their best energetic songs. BUT, if you want to hear just a good, old fashioned hard rock song, listen to Flying High off of the Conqueror CD. You will hear the best rhythm section performing today at their best, amazing guitar work, fantastic vocals and harmonies, and, as a bonus, Miku belting out an awesome cat scream. They have so many great songs in their discography, but for me, this one is outstanding. Nothing extremely complicated, but the musicianship is to die for.

Minchorules2809

You definitely have not lost your mind, you just realise genius and greatness 🔥🔥🔥

Rebecca Haigh

Kanami and MISA both have perfect pitch.

Rick

It's interesting that you brought up Bach, because I have thought that it seemed like Kanami was channeling Bach when she wrote that crazy guitar riff. It kind of reminds me of part of "Toccata and Fugue in D Minor."

David Cook

MISA MISA MISA!!!!! Sai-chan Mincho Sai-chan Mincho Sai-chan Mincho!

Drive Time

You are thinking of the Dec 13, 2020 livestream, which was just a few days after the release of the song.

Drive Time

You mentioned 2/4 time. I'm not sure if that's what Akane means by a "two beat" song or not but thought you might find these interview snippets interesting. Akane: "When I listened to the demo of Different, the first thing I thought was “Here came a song entirely with two beats.” It was the first song that’s two-beat from start to finish, while songs up until then often become two-beat only in important parts. Moreover, its tempo is fast, and the hi-hat hits throughout. In that sense, my basic training was very effective. I was focusing on finger training around the time when I recorded it, so my practice of getting used to the tempo by moving the sticks with my fingers took the best effect ever. Also, I wanted to bring out the melody above all, so I consciously tried not to fill it with too many sounds. Fast two-beat tends to sound noisy, so I intentionally made a simple section to emphasize the change, and I kicked only once every two bars. I thought quite a lot how to make it simple while keeping the speedy feel." You also mentioned chord progressions and some other things Kanami seems to have touched upon: Kanami: "I’ve incorporated my favorite chord progression. I’ve always quite liked progressions with diminished chords, and I also wrote many songs with tension chords like this when I was a singer-songwriter. I thought it would be a good time for us Band-Maid to use such a chord progression with a lonely feel. So, the song is more elaborate in terms of chords than before. Another characteristic might be that the guitar solo is not like “Listen to this solo!” I just play a short one behind vocals. That’s because my image of the anime Log Horizon is something like a picture book. It looked a little dark picture book for me, so I focused on the storyline rather than the rock feel and decided not to put in a solo that sounds a typical guitar solo." Kanami: "Around the time when I wrote it, I got stuck on riff making. I talked about it with someone, and I got advice to make riffs with open strings. So I tried to make such riffs, which was the starting point of Different. I added a little bit of quarter-note triplets to make the riff sound faster. When I wrote Different like that, I realized again how important riffs are, so during the stay-at-home period, I was a complete “riff-making machine” (laughs)."

Byron Iida

BAND-MAID anime tie-ins are all simultaneously about the anime, and still not about the anime. Log Horizon is about players trapped in a game “Totally Different World.” If they die, they respawn “Rise from the dead.” But each time they respawn they loose some of their memories from the real life outside the game “Lost your bearings” This was one of the first BAND-MAID song I heard, I’m embarrassed to admit that I really liked the song but didn’t dive deeper into the band until Zen years later. I know that there are fans of the old Log Horizon theme, but I thought that theme sucked, I was just happy to get a good replacement.
