Big Dad. Yeah, this is an interesting one. I don't speak Japanese, but what I take away from it is a woman has had a baby (probably first "warmth in my hands") and she is singing an ode to her father who taught her by turning his back. Can't really tell if it is in appreciation or not, but to me seems to be saying "as a father, you teach me no matter what you do, even if it is nothing" and accepting the lesson of absence and making lemonade out of lemons. Even though Miku didn't write it, seems appropo based on her childhood.

When You finnish Bocchi You must watch a show called "Sound! Euphonium". One of the best show I've seen in my life. It's about high school symphonic bands. Watch a trailer first of you like.

Also, fun fact. The Maids only played this song live 7 times in 2014, and once in 2015, all in Japan, with 4 of those in the same venue. So it was a pretty Big surprise when Miku played it solo with acoustic guitar in August 2024 at Spotify O-East. Oh, and of course, there's this... https://youtu.be/QMAjw0U1bb8?si=3ItkTCUquJ9mdlG0

Big Dad ... MIKU is singing to her father. BAND-MAID released “Big Dad” on January 8, 2014. Nearly all of the songs on this album are attributed to Kentarō Akutsu with an assist on this song attributed to G-YUNcoSANDY for help with the lyrics. If you want to think about it this way, it is the first "MIKU" song ... she gets one on every album. Of course the reprint also contains Summer Drive. Keep your back to me. Listen to me. I want to tell you everything The biggest warmth in the world Wave your hand now to the big warmth In the album, a child's smile The lens is like an eye, and it's been watching over me I can do anything on my own Since when can't I be honest? Even though I hate myself for being so small You never stopped scolding me. I listened to him with my back turned to him. Everything I live for I had the courage to go out Because I knew love I'll sing this song to my big bag I can't even hold back the tears because we're so alike I'm sure they knew I was holding it back Believe in yourself and keep going My dad's clumsy magic Keep your back turned and listen to me I'm sure you'll get stronger The biggest warmth in the world Wave to the big warmth Give this song to Big daddy Let the light shine on me forever Keep smiling even when he's not here And hold me in your arms someday And hold the little life that's about to be born I'll tell you exactly what I'll do So for now Keep your back to me and listen to me I don't want you to see my tears. I'm going to be a little more serious than usual. “Thank you.” Keep your back to me and listen I'm gonna play the future The biggest warmth in the world Cause I've got the biggest warmth in the world right here Big bag, big bag, this song Sorry, translated Kana (Kanji, Hiragana, Katakana) Lyrics from DeepL ... but I think you get the idea ;) . The song is quite poppy and probably could have been re-released under the "Cluppo" label ;) .

Kanami was over the moon beside herself

I would like to see Kanami get her hands on Big Dad, rewrite and arrange into a banger. 💚

We would have to leave it as a MIKU song tho ;) .

Japanese lyrics cannot be translated well by a translation application because the expressions are poetic, omitting subjects and objects, and using many metaphors. Please refer to my “free translation (not verbatim)” below. (Personally, I think the lyrics of this song are intended as a gift to her father from a woman about to get married.) ----------------------------------------------------------- Listen to me with your back turned. I want to tell you everything. I am now waving my hand to the warmth of you, the biggest warmth in the world. When I look at my childhood smile in the album, the camera lens reflecting me is like your eyes, and I am protected by you. I thought I could do everything by myself, but when have I stopped being honest with myself? Even when I was disgusted with myself for being so small, you never failed to scold me. You kept your back to me and listened to everything I did in life. I had the courage to go out because I knew (your) love. I give this song to Big Back (=Dad). I'm just like you in that I'm a bit tearful, so I'm sure you knew that I was holding back the tears. All of this was Magic that my clumsy (=not good at conveying things in words) dad used on me when you wanted to tell me to “believe in myself and keep going”. Keep your back to me and listen. I will definitely be strong. I wave now to the (=your) biggest warmth in the world and give this song to Big Dad. Keep shining your light on me. Keep smiling even though I am not with you. And one day, when I have a little life of my own (=my baby), hug that baby (your grandchild). I will say it clearly then, so I will say nothing for now but give you this song. Listen to it with your back to me. Because you will know I am crying. Let me say this a little more seriously than usual. “Thank you.” Keep your back to me and listen. I'll play the future. Because the biggest warmth in the world is right here. I give this song to Big Back (=Dad). ※ The official lyrics do indeed say “Big Bag,” but no matter how many times I re-listen to this part in the studio recording and MIKU's live singing, it still sounds like “Big Back” to me, so let me just say that I have changed it on my own. BTW, in Japan, even official lyric cards sometimes have incorrect lyrics due to typographical errors or mistyping.

Next anime - Frieren. I don't want to see you cry, but i would love to hear your comments on soundtrack.

Big Dad is a lovely (and first) Miku song. it sounds even more adorable with Miku singing it. Her voice is just perfect for it Po! See ya tomorrow Po!

Charlie Lucas

I 100% agree about "big back". You can correct me if you think I'm overstating this, but I've always made that same change and taken it as a key phrase. I think the subtext is that a big back is strong and dependable. A reference to a "big back" often comes up as a realization that a boy is becoming/has become an adult. (It sounds obvious, but I don't know that I've seen this as an allusion in any American/English media.)

Charlie Lucas

Love Frieren. Only concern is that it is a bit of a slow burn, and a bit long. (28 episodes, so far, and more coming soon.)

This song is about one woman who embarrassed to talk to her father face to face, she asks her father to turn his back on me and listen to what I say... as Japanese people, I can understand the meaning of this lylic very naturally. Perhaps you are well aware of this ―― In Japanese expressions, “back” is given a very important meaning. "His life is told by his back.” "He never said anything, but his back told the whole story." "Follow my back (= leave everything to me)." etc.
