100% correct when I was told that this was the opposite of "Life."

I was so sure that the NEMOPHILA I heard play "Life," was a completely different band. So sure that I had to look up the song again to make sure I wasn't thinking about another band!

The vocals are sick. The unisons are killer...overall, a great sound and an amazing time!

The first song I heard from Nemophila was G.O.D, was impressed. I then dug into others and discovered a very talented band. As for their diversity, one only has to look at Hazuki - also a guitarist with Koiai ( formerly the Li-sa-X band). The one thing that does not surprise me anymore is the talent level of bands from Japan.

Someone should have mentioned that ZEN is not very zen :p . Every time I listen to Mayu I worry about her voice.

Juan San

The same thing happens to me. I always feel like she's on the verge of breaking.

It is said that their bassist wrote this song to listen to while meditating...

Haraguchi-san (bassist) credited as writing both music & lyrics for this is a total nu-metal kid, though in fairness both Mayu (vocals) and Tamu (drums) also have a soft spot for that side of things. Back when the band was still a five piece they released a cover EP called 'The Initial Impulse' which contained Slipknot, System of A Down and Limp Bizkit (as well as Metallica and one original). Former guitarist Saki is more j-rock/metal and classic hard rock in her tastes and continuing guitarist Hazuki (also of Koiai) likes 90s European metal like old school Arch Enemy & Children of Bodom, though she also has a weakness for jazz fusion and Polyphia (the latter is more apparent with Koiai). I've been following the band since their second single Raitei in 2020, which has the heavy instruments but only a bit of the heavier vocals. Because of the first lockdown happening not long after they formed, doing covers through their YT channel was really a way of raising their visibility and establishing a fanbase when it was impossible to do so the traditional way through regular live shows. Must admit I've been less in interested in their more recent material, probably going back to before their last album with Saki, 2024's 'Evolve', where they used more outside writers and the song quality felt somewhat variable, the best songs were great but others felt kinda by the numbers. Didn't help that Koiai were getting more active & focused in their sound at the same time. Since becoming a quartet they have taken more control on the songwriting front, but their sound has also moved in a more metalcore direction, which isn't bad per say but is less my thing personally. Other than checking out early-Nemo with the MV for Raitei (also featuring the novelty of Mayu pre-hair dye, Tamu pre-1st daughter and Hazuki pre-Ibanez guitars), if you want more Haraguchi-san penned songs I'd recommend Hypnosis, or if you want something that has both sides of Nemo's sound, then you can't really go wrong with Rise or Adabana (the latter featuring the novelty of Saki not allowed to headbang whilst recovering from a head injury).

I suggested Rise because of the lyrics and music is amazing 🤘🏻🫶🏼🤘🏻

Hypnosis is great. Arabian nights metal... And Rise and Adabana are heavyyyy......

That's exactly my kind of ‘Zen’. 🤭 Yes, the many sides of Nemophila are actually totally crazy, but so much fun. 🔥🤘🏻 For many reasons I'm already looking forward to the video with your brother for ‘Given Up’ by LP. Because yes, for me too, LP was one of the most important bands in my musical life, and Chester will always remain unmatched for me, but on the one hand, Mayu always reminds me a little of Chester with her vocal abilities, and on the other hand, Nemo's covers are almost as strong as their own songs and also such an important historical part of the band, in my opinion. They only got together in the second half of 2019, so it didn't take long for the pandemic to throw a massive roadblock in the way of their joint journey. And with the covers they released (almost without exception, I think) every Friday, they've already built up a solid fan base around the globe during this time. And there are some real gems among them, always with great respect for the original, but still Nemophila style. :) The two covers of Maximum the Hormone, X-Japan's ‘Kurenai’, Babymetal's ‘Megitsune’ or even Journey's 'Seperate Ways', just to throw a few of them into the ring. But also just fun songs from completely outside their genre, such as NiziU's ‘Make You Happy’ or the ‘Banana Song’. Yes, the one from the Minions. :) (It's only just under 2 minutes long, but highly recommended) As ‘Life’ and 'Zen’ already impressively demonstrate, the range of what they can do is almost limitless.
