*Sigh* ...can I just be good at bass already?

I would prefer not to be the one to say it, but Serina (ba) has been with the group since the beginning in 2016, just like Asaka (vo/gt). Junna was the former drummer (now with Hagane), and Nagisa, who we don't see enough of here, is her highly capable successor. 😉 Okay, enough nitpicking. 😇 Ambivalent was my gateway drug to TRiDENT back then, and I still haven't gotten off it today. 🔥🤘🏻 I know they have their loyal following, but I still think they fly far too under the radar and should be much bigger.

In fairness to your learning frustrations, Serina has been playing bass for well over a decade, having first founded Girls Rock Band Kakume in 2013 at the light music club in high school together with TRiDENT singer/guitarist Asaka, Lora (who left in 2015) and drummer Junna (who you're familiar with from her recent work with Hagane amongst others). So she's been playing professionally since at least 2017 when the first GRBK album came out. They turned into TRiDENT in 2020 after GRBK disbanded in March following Junna graduating from the group and with the addition of Nagisa as their new drummer in May. Junna might be more flashy in her style, but Nagisa is still no slouch technically and seems to make for a better musical balance with Asaka & Serina in a trio format, as well as a good fit personality-wise. Slap & pop is definitely not a beginner technique, with your fingers you're snapping the string for a more percussive attack & sharper note envelope (you have it hit off the metal frets in some instances). It has it's roots in the late 60s/early 70s where bassists like Larry Graham were figuring out how to cover for the lack of a drummer in certain musical formats (IIRC he was playing with an organist when he first started to experiment). That's without even getting into the double thumbing technique of ultra virtuosos like Victor Wooten.

Powerful band.

F Chopper Koga of Chacharic spin has a series of tutorials on bass and slap specifically. might want to track them down. Koga has specifically been mentioned as the inspiration for Serina of Trident and Kanede of Neki. And while i haven't seen interviews specifically calling it out, Mina and Wakazaemon (currently and formerly of East of Eden) and Fami of Lovebites all play in a style that seems inspired by Koga. might want to see if you can find it

Gacharic Fan has posted a few the FCK tutorial videos on his YT channel. The subtitles are automatically generated and may not be particularly helpful in places, but I think the close-ups alone are very educational. Pictures speak louder than words, right? :) These are some of the first ones I found. There may be more out there. • [Slap Bass Super Guide 2010] » https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bMIyBaEip0U • [Slap Bass Easy Phrase Collection 2011] » https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SQ-SeQwMcZs • [Live & Lesson 2011] » https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2UgiUcDKP5s

Sadly still an underrated band ... it was JUNNA who left and was replaced by Nagisa. I'm sorry if that was unclear :( .

Hot pop songs flow through the streets All I want is hard rock sounds I feel like I'm tied down But I'm just clinging to this boring everyday life Trivial news The endless barrage of boring conversations is depressing My hidden feelings are growing I scream from my heart and the best fake smiles overflow It's so frustrating, no matter how much time passes Everyone is so annoying They're all so good at pretending to understand Is this the time to challenge them? Come on, reset your reason Time to go, from here now Go away, don't worry Be myself, I'm me Don't worry, I'm fine alone In this twisted love, we What are we protecting and believing in? We've become tangled up in hypocrisy and can't be untangled Time to go, here I am I want to escape this crowded world Just licking our wounds Nothing will change Aren't we just stupid, telling lies and niceties and excuses? "All humans are equal, and God only gives us trials we can overcome. It's hilarious how you pretend to be right without any basis." Trapped coward, I have no interest in vague common sense Time to go, from here now Go away, run away, hey Be yourself, you are you Don't worry, it's fine to be alone In this distorted society, What do we rely on to survive? We've become tangled in hypocrisy and our place has become Time to go, even though I know I can't escape, what should I do? Ah, I want to live more freely, Why do I still worry? Ambivalent spirits are rampant Time to go, from here now Go away, don't worry about it Be myself, I am me Don't worry, it's fine to be alone In this distorted love, What do we protect and believe in? I know it's a productive future Time to go, but for now I can't be alone, even in hypocrisy Written by: Asaka, TRiDENT

Nagisa was already in the band when I discovered TRiDENT, and she's what drew me to their music. Her energetic style of drumming is amazing to watch.
