After your comments and looking up some explanations of episodes 1 and 2, I sort of get it.

This show is so obscure and confusing, but it has a hold on me. I want to know what is going to happen next.

It feels a little like the Matrix as well...but...weirder?

Yep, when some other elements will come, it will help you understand the show a little bit better, but the show is confusing on purpose, so it's part of the experience ^^. Also, since you talked about the Matrix, if you remember, Neo is supposed to follow the white rabbit and that when he go to the night club. The funny part is that Lain goes to the club after her classmate ask her, in particular the one called Arisu, which is just the japanese way of prononcing "Alice". So we can say that both like to reference Alice in wonderlands, which with it idea of another world behind the mirror, is perfect to talk about the ego and the self, what define us, who are we really ect ect, a common theme in cyberpunk.
