I am still struggling to fully understand, but this episode was actually frightening.

I thought Lain would be the only one involved in this show with "the wired," but I was wrong.

I am maybe starting to understand that people get involved or experiment with being in "the wired" and possibly become frightened of the game that are played within it. There are others that choose to take their life and live within "the wired" forever...I think.

Why is her sister being tormented? Why was there 2 of her???

When VR first came out people would play it almost like in the wired ..some people when they take the headset off couldn’t differentiate what was real what was just a game if you look it up they have been many cases about

I say last episode that the title may have some clue, since it was "religion", now that this episode talk about a possible god of the wired you see what I mean. The whole thing that was talked in the very first episode, abandoning your body to live in the wired, like a sort of afterlife/reincarnation, add the wired that seem to have more and more power over the real world, the talk about a god of the wired, who is really Lain, the prophecy ect ect, I won't say much, but this imagery that take inspiration of the religion is made for a purpose, which is pretty comon in the cyberpunk genre i will say ^^'.

Considering when Lain was produced, it seems to be a dystopian look at what the future would be like with the internet, ala 1984.

"Kami" is a deity or spirit. "-sama" is an honorific like -"san", but it's reserved for people who are vastly superior to you - gods, nobles, etc. But when they say "Kamisama", they're usually referring to the Christian God, or at least the concept of a single all-powerful being. I'd say the show is slightly futuristic. I don't think you ever find out what year it's set in (they do keep telling us it's "present day, present time"), and honestly it doesn't matter. Weirdly enough, it's common for people to hand out little packets of tissue in Japan. They'll have a company logo or a message or something on them; it's a promotional stunt. If you watch enough anime you'll see this come up again.

11:03 "This isn't supposed to take place in the future, right?" Serial Experiments Lain takes place in Present day, Present Time lol.
