I know this show has elements of magic and make believe. Not to mention it's animated, but there is something just so human about the show. It feels real. These are real characters to me.

I believe the voice acting and the script writing has a lot to do with it. Fern being upset with Frieren for telling her to just get a new staff, I imagine, was hard for Fern to hear. That staff meant a lot to her and the suggestion of getting a new one caused an argument.

A beautiful moment happens when it's implied that Frieren noticed Fern's reaction and decided to do her best to get the staff fixed.

This...that was so perfect.

Serie has also been suppressing her mana, despite her saying it was a waste of time. Her suppressed mana is probably equal to Frieren's full mana. Fern is the only who noticed Serie was doing it, which is why she wanted her to be her student.

About Denken, Ubel and some other, little spoiler but not too domageable, it's just that Fern passed the test before them, they haven't met Serie yet. You assumed that Fern was the last being tested, but it wasn't that. I won't say much, but you might have surprise with it ^^. Now, about the episode, i think i said previously that the show is like a big circle, there is a lot of thing that like to come back and take even more weight, the spell that cast a field of flower is the perfect exemple. It was first shown when Frieren casted it at the statue of Himmel in episode like two or three, i don't remember exactly, but at that time, it was just a spell like that. Now we know that it was the first spell that Flamme's parent teached her and her favorite, a spell that Frieren asked to learn from Flamme when she was already old after learning that (so it was already dear to Frieren), now we also learn that it was the spell that made Himmel fell in love with Frieren and made him want Frieren to be on his party, the spell that united the four of them together, started their journey to defeat the devil king and make that she is now the surrogate mother of two kids from her old pals. Serie call it "useless" because it isn't a spell made for battle, even if we know now that he could be used for it like we saw with Scharf, who cast it and turn the flowers into metal. But that because Serie is a mage that see magic as a tool to fight, Flamme described her master as someone that would never bring peace, i can assume that she like battle because it is a good soil for evolution, just like the cavemen invented fire to fight darkness, magic evolve to fight adversity and bring mages more and more powerful. We can see that in our real world, with so many invention made for military purpose at first, like internet for exemple. But, once again, don't be too harsh on Serie, wait until the last episode of season 1 to make your final opinion on her ^^. About the fluctuation, basically, when you conceal your mana, since you try very hard to compress it, there might be some part that try to regain their freedom and that the fluctuation. Imagine it like having to compress something between your hands, but sometime the thing you compress try to slip between your fingers. Frieren have dedicated her life to that, so here fluctuation are very minimal and very few have seen them, Serie must have learned to do it too (she talk about how many centuries you need to learn it after all), but nobodies have seen the fluctuations... until Fern. So yeah, Lernen said that Frieren mana without the restrain would be equal to Serie, but Serie's mana is restrained too, that mean that Frieren's mana in natural, is equal to Serie's mana restrained, that show how much of a monster she could be, but also prove how much of a monster Fern is to see the fluctuations that even one of Serie's top students, the one that spent decades with her, never saw. Sorry about the big block of text, but i had a lot to say lol.

No need for assumptions about whether they passed or failed; you'll find out next episode.

One big edit to put my comments into one :) Fate /stay anime is based on Fate/stay visual novel game. And they both cover different story routes (plus some spin offs and films). All that with different animation studios, and that makes watching order complicated. Plus I am not sure about where you can watch it legally. But it was one of my first anime and tsundere character. Its years ago but i think i watched it in release order - 1. Fate and 2. Unliited blades work. I cried at cinema watching end of Suzume, movie i watched 3 times before, and felt no shame. There is a beauty in sharing (or just not hiding) emotions. And now for fluctuations. Fluctuations in mana shows that it is suppresed, its not on constant level, but shows some changes that should not be there. Hence that 1st class mage was praised for seeign through the Frieren suppression, but a minute later Serie revelled to us that he doesn´t saw those fluctuaction in her mana. Serie is also suppresing hers. And that lead to final scene when Fern looks terrified by Series mana, but thats because she can see her full power and not suppresed like others, and that is why Serie sudenly switched from Fern is ordinary to be my student.

Serie has been suppressing her mana this whole time. You have to keep in mind most of what serie says isnt what she actually believes. She has this front she tries to keep up. She says its a worthless skill but she spends her life doing it just like frieren. Lernen says frieren has about the same mana as serie when frieren isnt suppressing her mana. But he never noticed that serie is suppressing hers. All to say that frieren's full strength mana is the same as series suppressed mana. And serie is much older and much much stronger then frieren. We just dont really know by how much

Sorry for the length in advance. Serie is suppressing her mana as well. She’s from the mythical era so she’s been around since the Goddess was supposedly around so she has just by living probably 10k years or so has way more mana than probably any other being in this universe hence why at 27:39/40 she smiles when Lernen says Frieren’s mana is the same as hers. She was “proud” that Lernen detected Frieren’s mana fluctuations since only the Demon King and Lernen noticed it at first glance. However, disappointed that in the 50+ years, he did not notice Serie was also suppressing her mana. Fern has an innate talent for mana suppression and detection. She clocked Serie right away and Serie said in episode 25, she only wants to train talented mages. Her face was so excited about Fern it always makes me laugh. First class mages are ones she deems worthy it’s her club and her intuition is always right per Frieren. First class mages aren’t about potential, they are the pinnacle of magehood. They are the best of the best already and can continue to grow but it’s not a participation trophy. All the humans who failed so far— Kanne—can’t visualize herself as a 1st class mage, can’t escape from the clutches of a bird monster, can’t detect Mana well. Laufen—can’t visualize herself as a first class mage, leaves traces of mana behind when she uses Jilwer Blei—can’t visualize himself as a first class mage, barely can fight Ehre—can’t visualize herself as a first class mage, has more mana than Wirbel but can’t visualize herself beating him, lacks confidence, carries literally and metaphorically by Wirbel Scharff—can’t visualize himself as a first class mage. Homemade spell lacks fundamentals, always gets taken out, carried metaphorically and literally by Wirbel. None of them deserved to be a first class mage. Now with Frieren, she failed her for a lot of reasons. First and foremost, Serie is basically Frieren’s grumpy grandma. Frieren’s lack of ambition really irks the grumpy grandma. And think about it, after Flamme died, Frieren literally just collected herbs in the forest for most of her life with a 10 year detour with the Hero’s Party to defeat the demon King. In episode…13 I believe, there was a flashback of the hero’s party asking her to join them and she thought it was too late to defeat the demon King and didn’t fight a demon for 500 years. For living as long as she has, Serie said Frieren is relatively unskilled for her age. So she didn’t pass her because while so freaking awesome at killing demons and being generally great at magic, she should be more impressive at her age. Lastly, after Serie passed Fern. She said “Next” so there are still more mages to test. The remaining test takers are Denken, Übel, Land, Wirbel, and Methode.

Frieren does know of mementos she had that suitcase with stuff like that ring that she got from himmel so after the fight she knew that it meant a lot and asked to get it fixed

LoneStar Avenger

Serie is saying that Frieren is not as powerful as she could be if she hadn't spent so much time devoted to suppressing her mana BUT she is also suppressing her mana and none of her students saw through it. This means she has probably devoted even more time to mastering suppressing her mana. Which implies that she has mastered it to such a high level and has come to the conclusion that it is a pointless skill and you would be better off mastering a different skill, like, say, not dropping your mana detection when casting a spell.🤷‍♂️
