I fixed the commercial in the middle of the reaction...sorry!

I wasn't expecting to enjoy this performance and explanation this much.

DeYoung's explanation of how the song was supposed to be an description of a woman who is aging and needs to reevaluate herself and who she is in this world. He personified America. Pretty neat.

I love DeYoung. I need to listen to STYX now.

Dennis certainly seems likeable, and I appreciate his sentiment about how we all have to try to get along and compromise. On the other hand, according to the rest of the band, he tried to be the boss too much and that's why they kicked him out of the band. Just seems funny.

Saw Styx in concert with Tesla and Joan Jett and The Blackhearts, and it was one of the most epic shows I've seen!

Styx is seen as kind of a cheesy joke band known for songs like Mr. Roboto and Come Sail Away, but I think they're actually quite good, especially if you like epic 70s synth freakouts. edit - That held note is wild. Holy crap.

Thank you so much! I have more to say, but real quickly- you commented you thought Dennis could do musical theater- that was part of the creative differences within the band. As is clear, Dennis has a more traditional singing style. He also had more of a tendency to write ballads, and was more interested in doing concept albums and involve more theatrics/production in their stage show. (ie..the Kilroy album and tour) Anwyay... in 1993 Dennis was asked to participate in the 20th Anniversary stage revival of Jesus Christ Superstar, in which he tallied 268 performances as Pontius Pilate. It was also suggested to him that he record an album of Broadway standards, which he did in 1994- works by Gershwin, Lerner & Loewe, Andrew Lloyd Weber, etc.. He then composed a score and musical of his own- The Hunchback of Notre Dame, which was first performed in 1997 at the Tennessee Repertory Theater.

There are certainly people who hold those criticisms of Styx but that is not a universal view. Some people feel that same way about bands like Journey, or anyone who makes what is considered "radio friendly" music, but of course that's an unfair take, and usually an uninformed one by people only familiar with a couple songs.
