Air! Huh! Good god y'all, what is it good for? Absolutely... everything??

In this episode, Seth takes a journey to our AIR level where our scientists* are working diligently on studying and consuming all things air in our laboratories and complimentary air bar. We'll learn about cyclists' EPO, cooling vests, deep diving, smelling salts and more. Take a deep breath, we're headed for rarefied air.

By the way, we've been asked how listeners can enjoy episodes of The Annex outside of the Patreon app. The good news is, every subscriber has a personalized RSS feed that you can plug into any podcast player of your choice! You can find it in the "Membership" tab on desktop, or in the three-dots menu on mobile - more details available here. And if you're looking for a transcription, our Secret Base elves are diligently working on it - when it's available in the next day or so it will be attached to this post within Patreon. Thanks for listening!

My favorite part so far is Seth cutting off Will when he’s tryna talk about nerd stuff 😆

so many fun (and dark) interpretations of "air" in sports!

TinyPineTree

I had to do a project on Argon in school, great to see my favorite noble gas getting some love

So one sports-adjacent use of the term Air: Chess. Usually, when a player castles their king early in a chess game, the king is behind a solid wall of pawns. Sometimes, this can be a problem: if the opponent gets a rook to your back row and you can't capture it or block it, the king is stuck behind the wall of pawns and it's checkmate. Thus, sometimes a player will move one of the pawns one square *just to prevent that from happening* by getting the king some air. The technical term is "luft" because the Germans were the early innovators in the field of chess terminology (see also other German terms we use to sound fancy like Zwieschenzug -- In-between move, which is when it looks like you have to respond to what your opponent just did, but instead you make a bigger threat first, *then* respond to their threat -- or Zugzwang, literally "move-compulsion", which is a concept that comes up in endgames a lot where you'd be able to draw easily if you could just pass your turn instead of making a move, but the rules don't allow that and you are forced to make a move even though every move is bad. (technically you are not forced to make a move, you can also just resign) )

I can't wait until we get to the Argonian floor of The Annex
