Hey, it's Jon again! My series "The History of Charging the Mound" keeps on rolling with an episode on one of the best and most accomplished fighters in Major League Baseball history, the one and only George Bell. You saw glimpses of Bell in the last episode. Now, we'll get to know a guy who's often remembered for his most disappointing moments, but is a more complex man and ballplayer than he's typically given credit for.

If you'd like to catch up on the rest of the episodes in this series, you can find them right here. Since you're a member of Secret Base's Patreon, you get to see them all ad-free, months before they land on our YouTube channel. And if you're new to our Patreon, there's tons more in the way of ad-free videos, experimental projects, and Patreon exclusives waiting for you.

Thanks so much as always for deciding that projects like this one are worth your bucks. I'll be back in March with another episode in this series about grown men who fight and usually look pretty stupid doing it.

it's finally here ‼️ the 31st refresh is the charm

Dr. Katz

George Bell might be one of the most interesting players in baseball history

Derek Monk

Thanks for the spit take: "Move on, move on, move on...Mo Vaughn!"

Timothy Richardson

I love that you showed him as a round and complex character.

Brolty

So happy I got to see Jon break down Bell/Sele, and also glad to learn a lot more about George Bell! Great work as always!

Caleb B

welcome back jimy williams. the only man who could spark three straight CGSOs from his staff ace out of pure spite

Kiaayo

Stieb mentioned, where my Stiebheads at?

vlopper

Laughed my ass off when Jon made that joke/pun. He has such a way with words to make situations such as this uniquely funny and memorable.

Samuel Brown

So exited to hear Jon say the words "Asheville Tourists"!

Fox Doucette

Present and allegedly accounted for.

Fox Doucette

Did Bell wish everyone was good enough to hot dog or is that just one isolated example in MLB?

B

In the Peña/Holmes fight, is that Joe West behind the dish making taking the world’s slowest stroll to the mound while grinning ear to ear?

PsyMar

I can only imagine if we'd got prime Bell against prime Carlos Zambrano, who once knocked Michael Barrett out cold with a single punch... while they were teammates!

Efren Echavarria

That story about McGlothen was a literal gutpunch. Damn that was heartless but in a way that's just how karma works.

sandiegospirit

Praying for an ‘84 Padres retrospective when he finally drops the Braves/Padres video

2026-09-05 14:00 the question i have for the forum is... is the sammy sosa trade a WORSE trade than the vikings Herschel Walker trade ? I think I still lean on Walker being worse because while he did have some performances of note he was in a much more impactful position thats much harder to replace.... but Sammy Sosa IS Sammy Sosa

as an atlanta native i NEED that. jomboy covered it a while ago but i crave the boisian version

Griffin Cain

the move on / mo vaugn transition is one of the greatest moments in content creation history. this series is a treasure, i love baseball history in particular and the little tangents and stories of the game ive never heard of before i was born really make it great. can’t imagine how much research goes into it

Mylo Grams

No way. The cubs got a slugger in the heat of the 90s sure. But the cowboys directly won 3 super bowls as a result of that trade. Gotta be worse for the vikings

Mylo Grams

2nd only to Lonnie smith

Horace 'Jack Dudebrother' Hogan

I see that Jon is a Super Nintendo man, run/attack on Y and jump on B. Or a Sega Genesis guy. I’ve never had a Genesis, I don’t know how their controls are usually set.

Adam

“It’s… probably a direct flight.” Nailed it bud

CS

Man, I feel bad that from Bell's perspective everyone else was a villain, at least in part because a great many of them just weren't communicating with him at all. That's such a miserable way to live.

David Dyte

I was umpiring a vintage game once and that "duck the pitch, ball hits the bat, lobs up, catcher snags it" play happened, just like that. I called it out. Players on both teams protested that as the hitter didn't offer, it didn't count. No idea what the 1864 rules had to say about that, but I was forced to reverse the call.

Robert

The Cowboys got Emmitt Smith out of that trade, who alone is better by football standards than Sosa is by baseball standards.

Brandon Rahhal

“No way they can stay alive.” That’s going to stick with me. Not because it’s cold, but bc of the opposite.

Brandon Rahhal

I read this first. Should’ve seen it coming. But just like the explosive speed of Mo Vaughn this bit caught me in the ribs and a bunch of people in this diner are staring at me for laughing so hard.

Gray K.

To hold you over until then, sportswriter Jeff Pearlman has a great video about the '84 Padres on his YouTube channel. He's also the author of an excellent book about another excellent team with a crazy clubhouse, "The Bad Guys Won!" which is about the '86 Mets.

Brandon Toy

I’m not sure I agree that is was wrong of George to get mad about women being in the male locker room. If he isn’t comfortable with it, doesn’t he have a right to voice that? Now, yes, he was a dick about it. But so what?

LEGION428

Fucking Jimy Williams. 🤮

Dan Wright

Its not much to ask a grown ass man to act like an adult when a person is just doing their job.

SCJ

caught me so off guard it had me ass up in hysterics

trotnixon

Bell was a bad teammate & a bad person with zero self-awareness. What was it he said about karma?

DennardC27

There was a more mature way to do that than berating her like an asshole. Would you want someone berating you like that?

josh

Incredible joke

OPAL

never underestimate the power of the human mind to be completely and utterly unwilling to rethink holding prejudice, despite how much prejudice is lobbed in its direction.

Jimmy Keffer

"But he didn't need it anymore. It was just another baseball." 💖
