I have two reasons for posting today. One is to tell you what Secret Base has been up to and also what's ahead on Patreon, and the other is to ask for some parenting advice– it’s basketball related parenting advice so, it’s relevant.  Oh, and this is Clara. Hello!

Okay if you have no interest in my children (monster) please scroll past this section.

Non-monsters, please weigh in: Should I take my kids to a high school playoff basketball game next weekend?

Some background: The kids are age 2 and 4, and if you’re unfamiliar with those ages, going somewhere new is either a wonderful experience, the stuff core memories are made of. Or. It is a crying festival that tests the limits of your patience so severely you can feel the rage in your inner ears. It's like a deep pounding/ringing/swirling, parents you know what I'm talking about. So, I would love some opinions on a high school bball outing for toddlers.

As I see there are a lot of pros: Cheap! Close to home! Free parking!

And a few cons: Loud. Will likely dredge up personal high school basketball disappointments, which you’d think I’d be over at this point but I legit still have dreams where I prove my HS coach wrong. So we may be playing with fire a little bit.

Please let me know what you think the comments.

Okay I’m ready to get back to business. END SCROLL for those who were not interested in the trials of motherhood.

Here’s what Secret Base put out in February that you may have missed while celebrating Groundhog’s Day (watching the movie, exchanging gifts, eating roast groundhog):

Will told us how Lake Placid ended up hosting the Olympics. And he did it in a new straight-to-camera, no-friends-allowed format. I can only assume he did it that way because he's mad at the rest of us (we’ve been putting gum under his desk for several months). Though it’s possible he wanted to try something new which he thought would be compelling. Do you guys think it was compelling or retaliation for the gum? Or both! Give a watch and let us know what you think via comments.

Episode 4 of Jon Bois’ The History of Charging the Mound hit the (digital) presses. This episode covers one of the few overlaps between karate and baseball (kicking). Give it a watch!

Jon Time

Seth told Ryan and Will about the saga of the 1970’s Atlanta Hawks search for a competent GM. The lesson of the story being, I believe, talk to strangers. Learn all about it here:

Seth Time

Seth learned this bit of Atlanta history while researching his big new project. Which brings me to what’s coming to Patreon in March:

The very same Seth has been crafting a deep dive into the history, the how, and the why of the NBA scouting, recruiting, and drafting international players. He and Ryan built a Draft Cavern for the project, and I think Seth might be lost in there because nobody’s heard from him for a bit. Episode one’s coming at the end of the month, hopefully he’ll find his way out by then.

I’ll be releasing more notes, journals, and audio interviews from my season embedded with the Las Vegas Slots, a VERY REAL basketball team I did not invent for a fun fiction project.

Jon’s releasing episode five of The History of Charging the Mound, which features a baseball game with last-day-of-school energy. Once on the last day of school I threw the cover of my TI-83 in the trash, which I mention just to remind you how the last day of school feels.

So if you’re not too busy celebrating the Ides of March (watching the movie, betraying people, eating Caesar salad), I hope you enjoy all that is the Secret Base Patreon.

My wife and I have been having the same discussion! I have a 3 year-old and she's a bundle of energy and a 1 year-old who's close to walking. I wouldn't be able to take them to any sporting event, much less a high school sports event where they have to stay in bleachers around others. Short answer: if they show the capacity to at least watch or stay in one place, then it's worth it. If they need to move around constantly, then I would wait.

The ringing in the inner ear as anger grows is so real. For me it starts around 9pm when they decide that bed time is optional and it’s still a great time to be a wiggly worm trying to break through the crest of the earth. We do a lot of dodger games here in LA. Best method is headphones, snacks, and having “sanctuary” zones in the concourse you can escape to when needed. Our little one loves people so she loves watching the crowd go wild at big pops too so while she watches the crowd we get to watch the game…it’s a battle worth fighting though! Good luck Clara!

Sounds like high school basketball is the perfect way to have a low commitment event. Even if the kids give up early, it’s a nice quick escape and you’re back home!

“Cheap, close to home, free parking” is how we decide what to do with our 4 and 1.5 year olds so yeah, seems perfect!

I'd say it depends on the kids, you might want to bring a book or Nintendo or something for them in case they get bored of the basketball, definitely try to sit near the exit, but probably low risk?

Can you enroll them on the team yet? I’m not a parent.

okay wanted to follow up, we went, and it went pretty well! stayed til halftime, climbed bleachers, tried cotton candy, the kids danced in the hallway, not to music, just kinda freeform. Which I think means they were having fun. 0 meltdowns, 5 stars
