Hey folks, it's Jon. Nine episodes into The History of Charging the Mound, it is finally time for The Big One.

I originally planned to make a single episode out of the encounter between Robin Ventura and Nolan Ryan, but as so often happens, I found a lot more story than I'd bargained for. Accordingly, this story will stretch across two supersized episodes. The first, which you see here, runs about 44 minutes and takes us through 1990. The second, which will drop right here on August 3rd, will probably run another 40 minutes or so.

Since you're a member of our Patreon, of course, you get to see both parts well before they eventually release on our YouTube channel in October. Thank you so much for being here, and I hope you enjoy my half-movie. While I'm busy squaring away the second half, I invite you to take a look around if you're a new subscriber. You'll find about four more hours of this series, as well as tons of other early releases and exclusive stuff we've been cooking up.

Dr. Katz

This is my Roman Empire and Super Bowl wrapped up into one

Phil

Never clicked on a post faster

Cody Janak

“How do you pronounce Refugio?” Well, if you ask most (white) people from that area, it’s Ra-FEER-ee-o. I’m commenting immediately after you posit the question, and I’m assuming you’ll mention it later in the video, but it’s always been weird to me so I ran to the comments to make sure it gets said

Parker

only jon bois could begin a mound charging video with a photo of john hancock and make it make sense somehow

Cameron Smith

Damn kinda crazy that literally no one else in the rest of his career ever charged Nolan Ryan again

Fox Doucette

"A transcendently hard thrower with control issues." I had a slider that on its best day was Dave Stieb and on its worst day broke late across the plate and caught the batter right in the nuts. Whoops. Still a source of amusement among the guys I played baseball with when we were kids. (ETA: Also, the best athlete in the history of sports is Milo of Croton. I will brook no argument about this.)

Boreal Tempest

Practicing good Wife Guy doctrine by saving this for when my wife gets home from work, which is a sacrifice unparalleled in modern history.

jon you can't just not post the music credits! i GOTTA know what the song at 23:30 was

Kylie McInnes

This is the most epic setup in the history of sports documentaries.

Wingcap

Jon I think it's pretty silly to produce a video about so many Nolan Ryan baseball records. I mean, he's just not into records.

Wingcap

I see Milo of Croton and raise you Gaius Appuleius Diocles and his inflation adjusted $15 billion dollar lifetime earnings

jay butler

I dont get why he said gams lol, but shout out to the random street noise

Harrison Hodges

no wait i found it! thx jon loved the video 💕💕

woof august 3rd feels like it’s in forever after that

Alis

Nolan was showing off his long muscular legs, which are called "gams" in somewhat outdated American English slang.

quick personal story that didn't make it into the episode: as a kid i dumped uncountable hours into RBI Baseball 4 for the Genesis. i usually played as the Sox since i was a big Frank Thomas fan and unconditional Bo Jackson loyalist. as such i took a ton of at-bats with Craig Grebeck, and despite his terrible stats he would so often come through with huge clutch hits. he became my main man despite me knowing basically nothing about him. my totally unfounded and probably-false theory after researching for this project is that the programmers gave him a little bump solely because of that first career homer he hit off Ryan. -jon

Thank you so much for all the work you've put in, for years and years now, making these absolutely incredible documentaries. I think you're genuinely the best documentary filmmaker in the world, not just the best on the internet. And so I really hope that one day Netflix or Amazon or someone will pay you millions of dollars to produce something for them so you can finally get your due

Thomas Beuster

Pretty weird of Jon to write baseball fanfiction

AJ Losey

Hearing your local paper get name-dropped in a Jon Bois video about two players who were never in the market is certainly interesting

Gray K.

My favorite sleeper pick for greatest athlete of all time is Jackie Robinson. Guy was a four-sport athlete at UCLA with professional-level skill in three of them.

Do we have official SB review of the Contreras Cavali incident? It's probably a low scoring one if it counts at all but the helmet toss and the context and attitudes of both players makes it worth taking a look at, in my opinion.

Charlie Fellows

How are we grading Contreras vs. Cavalli?

Robert

My hypothesis is that all this stuff is to highlight just how glad Nolan Ryan was to throw hands with Robin Ventura. Dude loves signing pictures of him throwing punches and the Rangers considered it the greatest moment in their franchise until the three pennants from 2010 to 2023.

Romain RUAULD

The Conga line of hold me back killed me. Also does the recent Contreras-Racist pitcher incident count ?

Eric U

the wildest thing this story revealed to me was that newspapers has so much money in the early 70s they paid a guy to have the little leauge beat.

sarah

coming to you live from july 27: it STILL feels like an eternity away

yessirskiii

vid is amazing, I've watched it like 10 times leading up to the episode tmr. I'm not rlly a baseball fan and never saw the Ryan Ventura fight and I'm holding out, not looking it up to see how you tell the story

Eric Wildsmith

Oh! My grandfather is Mike Jorgensen and to hear him tell it the Perm he just got done at a salon saved his life, not his helmet. He also got his ribs broken by Bob Gibson after hitting a season ending home run off the Cardinals. He got hit by so many pitches (as a lefty who stood inside) I was waiting for you to mention the headshot.
