Hey, it's Will. Two equally important notes off the bat:

Everyone at Secret Base is good, no job loss here, this was just a topic of interest that got stuck in my brain this spring after reading a book about Roger Neilson. Hope I didn't cause a brief panic in your heart.

Looking ahead, I may have put myself on the chopping block after referring to Bobby Clarke as the Flyers owner instead of the general manager. Whoops. If that fully ruins your experience, I understand and will continue to work on myself.

All that out of the way, we had some fun for today.

I've had this Roger Neilson story lodged in my head for some time and finally found a place to put it. But, talking about cancer and job loss sounded like a drag on its own, so Seth and Ryan joined me with tales of their own, both pulled from our tireless best friend, newspapers.com.

We also went long to see for ourselves how it would feel as a potential podcast format. What do y'all think? If we had a theme that wove through a few stories, does that make for a compelling listen to you? Either way, I hope you enjoy this one specific thing, and sorry again for calling Clarke the owner. I've got nobody to blame but everyone else who allowed me to make that mistake.

Thank you for creating a new video for me to eat my dinner to. I like the idea of a podcast where everyone brings a story to the table!

Ramsey didn't just do well, he rallied the Flyers from a 15-point deficit in the division to the 1 seed in the conference and a 3-1 lead in the East Final. A lot of those games were without Lindros, who everyone knew was gone at the end of the year. It was a really shitty thing to do to Neilson, but Ramsey made the decision itself harder than you are making it seem. Clarke is still an asshole for saying what he said. He said stupid shit all the time back then. According to the Flyers "good, bad, ugly" book, the year before, Lindros was recovering from a collapsed lung at the same time Roenick was recovering from a shattered jaw. Clarke looked at assistant GM Paul Holmgren and jokingly said to Lindros "You're not going to let that American come back before you do, right?" Lindros was furious at Clarke joking about a life-threatening injury.

yeah you're right, appreciate you calling that out! I guess to me it doesn't really matter how well Ramsey did from the perspective of Neilson re: losing his job. i'm sure Roger was very happy for his pal, but Ramsey's performance wouldn't have lessened Neilson's tough experience (in my opinion), so that's why i leaned in that direction

Thanks for the reply, and I completely agree with your position. The fans and players loved Neilson. The Flyers circa 1998-2003 were a circus for a multitude of reasons. One thing that most situations had in common: Even when you understand why the Flyers made the decision they did, Clarke would find a way to step on a rake and make himself look bad.

i love this format! i had enjoyed the general discussion over one storyline but it was uniquely engaging to listen to three different silly tales. I am hoping more of this is to come!

Baseball is stupid and isn't a proper sport, so don't use it's terminology for your silly time talk.

Ryan, I think the Star might have buried the lede entirely because I am boggling at this detail from UPI’s reporting on the Bagnall case: “Bagnall's former boss, Lisa Baltz, said many people who worked around her complained about her smell and inappropriate attire. She said Bagnall came to work sometimes wearing a cowboy hat and pigtails that clashed with Calvin Klein's classic image.” Pigtails! A cowboy hat! At the Calvin Klein perfume counter! I love this so much. There’s that Calgary charm school education at work. Also this video was great, love the format, please do more.

Secret Base

oh... my.... god. Meredith, thank you for your service -wb

Guys. Guys. The headline is “Stink Slip”

Wow, that is NOT the direction I was expecting the Tag story to end 😳

Bobby Clarke is still alive. And I was surprised to learn that Calvin Klein is ALSO still alive. In fact, he's a lot younger than I thought he'd be -- he was born in 1942! I would have sworn that brand was one of those classic turn-of-the-century brands that still exist out of inertia...
