Chapter 406 : Hunting the Hunter

While "fleeing," I continued to monitor the situation of the various slime blobs around me. The attack squad continued to pursue me while the gatherers seemed to not care and continued feasting on the dark energies prevalent in this area.

It's not like the eating slimes can't attack as well. I bet if I got close, they would lash out.

If I were going to locate the core, I needed to force it to move. Causing it to retreat was the easiest solution, but it also would put me at risk of losing the slime core. The ideal outcome would be for it to pursue me, and for that, I needed to be just out of range of its remote slime manipulation.

It has to have a distance limit within reason; there's no way it has the trait uncapped. Speaking of which, I really hope whatever this ability is, it will get incorporated into [Slime Mastery]!

Thus began my little game of cat and mouse. I would let the slime approach and then flee, ensuring I was just slow enough for the slime to continue pursuing me. Of course, I also lashed out with a few attacks, but only ones that wouldn't actually harm the slime, and since I was one, I knew full well which would be ineffective.

For example, even my mighty [Rift Rend] spell would effortlessly cut the slime in two. But, it was just slime mass and it could be easily reconnected. In fact, if the black slime didn't have a limit on how many individual blobs it could control, cutting the slime into more parts would actually increase its threat level.

The more I faked attacking the slime, the more deeply I desired this ability. It proved that if you kept the slime core safe, we slimes were effectively invincible to the vast majority of attacks. Of course, if I burnt the slime mass or froze it, it would be "defeated" and lose that portion of slime, but who cares if slime is quite easily replenishable?

Not to mention, thanks to [Blaze Slime] and [Cryo Slime], I don't have those drawbacks. Ignoring my slime cores, I'd say my greatest remaining weakness is not being able to easily recollect slime mass, so even useless attacks, if they disrupt or displace my slime, can cause me to take some losses. Sure, I could set up a slime domain, but then my enemies can just run away.

Being able to control slime like this removes the need to set up beforehand to collect slime and gives me greater control. I could have flying monsters under my control, heck, I could actually do that plan I had where I wanted to pretend to have a griffon under my control. Keldenar's golems would look like cheap toys in comparison to my slime minions, well, at least the grunt versions, I'm not too sure about his elite models.

I really needed to stop thinking about the ability as I was starting to get almost fanatical about acquiring it. If it were anything but a dumb slime, it might have even sensed my deep-rooted hunger to devour it. Thankfully, my fears didn't come true, and the slime kept trying to hunt me down as I dragged it further and further away from its location.

At this point, I'd even disturbed some of the gathering blobs, so I had a squad of slime blobs chasing after me. I wasn't sure if the black slime could feel anger, but it definitely wanted to consume my abundant lifeforce. I continued giving it false hope, letting its attack be just out of reach, as I lured it further and further.

Found you!

It was such a tiny movement I might have missed it entirely if not for all my [Sub-Cores] being on the lookout for even an ant crawling. In its desire to feast on me, it finally moved to keep its slime mass in range. I focused on its position and tore through space, immediately arriving in the room where the slime core was located.

It instantly froze, as if trying to hide, but I had already locked onto it. Under the gaze of my [Soul Sight], it looked lifeless, which was why I had such trouble locating it; it was practically an inanimate object at this point. The core itself was jet-black, while the slime it produced was a transparent shade of charcoal-black, making it very hard to spot naturally.

With the black slime core before me, I abandoned all pretext and lunged for it, trying to seize it with my hands. When those failed as it tried to dart away, the tentacles came out like a hungry maw and grappled it before it could slink away. My own slime ate away at its protective coat, trying to immobilize the core by taking away the slime mass it kept for itself. Surprisingly, though, the black slime core itself was trying to eat me, and it seemed to be draining the lifeforce in my own slime and using it to rapidly regenerate its own slime.

So that's why people don't keep their cores! Unlike normal slimes, even its core can feed and keep regrowing more slime mass. Fascinating!

However, I wasn't going to continue gawking at it, and with a mighty chomp, I greedily devoured the black core entirely. It tried its best to eat me in return, but it was futile.

<Compatible core detected. Integrate new core?>

Yes!

<Slime (Black) Core absorbed. Trait [Necrotic Slime LV 5] gained. Trait [Slime Puppetry LV 6] gained.>

<Trait [Necrotic Slime LV 5] has been automatically merged into [Primordial Slime LV 17]. >

<Proficiency gained. [Primordial Slime LV 17] improved to [Primordial Slime LV 18].>

<Trait [Slime Puppetry LV 6] has been automatically merged into [Slime Mastery LV 13].>

<Proficiency gained. [Slime Mastery LV 13] improved to [Slime Mastery LV 14].>

I did it! I finally did it! New slime abilities, new levels, new everything! Hahaha!

I started laughing with joy, my slime wiggling with delight as my form distorted. I was simply that happy about what I'd just gained that I could barely contain myself anymore. The traits were automatically absorbed, but thanks to the black slime profile, I could just reference them from there and see what exactly my new abilities were.

Let's start with the primary ability.

<[Necrotic Slime] This slime contains the power of death and decay, and is able to feast off the living and, to a lesser extent, the corrupted energies of the world. Necrotic Slime is highly toxic to the living and, with a mere touch, can instantly begin siphoning lifeforce, spawning more slime mass or feeding it back to the slime core to recover, akin to vampirism. Such an ability comes at a price, and the slime is highly susceptible to both Holy and Healing effects, being treated almost as if it were an undead abomination rather than a slime spawn. Conversely, the slime is extremely resistant to dark magic, quickly gaining immunity, and at higher trait levels can even feed off it entirely. Compatible with other slime traits.>

Interesting! Very interesting! So it's a bit like a slime vampire, makes me wonder what's the point of that sanguine mutation I had, this just seems far superior? Is that the power difference between a species evolution and a mutation?

I wasn't too happy about being weak to Holy and Healing. Still, since this was integrated into [Primordial Slime], which also contained [Heal Slime], I figured it was probably reduced, if not removed entirely.

Now I probably just need to get a gold slime to get holy resistance. At least, that's what I'm assuming. Still, with [Primordial Slime], as long as I don't activate [Necrotic Slime], I shouldn't become an undead abomination… I think?

What was interesting was that I saw no mention of anything that could hide itself, and looking through the profile, I didn't see any traits or abilities that would grant this. In fact, the only other new trait this profile had was [Slime Puppetry].

Maybe it's actually a side effect of being treated as an undead? Actually, that kind of makes sense.

Overall, I was pretty happy with this new slime trait; it seemed ideal for feeding on anything my [Acid Slime] couldn't dissolve. Which, admittedly, was probably not much at this point. However, it did give me the idea of trying to eat ghosts, since they technically count as dark, corrupted energies, right? It also provided the rare ability to heal my own core through life-stealing.

And now, onto the main event… Which is kind of weird that I'm more interested in a sub-trait rather than the primary ability, but hey, that's life for you, it's full of surprises!

<[Slime Puppetry] While all slimes naturally seek to further improve their ability to control their body of slime, others seek to go beyond the normal confines. At the cost of losing some precision and strength, this trait allows the slime to retain a link to any separated slime mass and continue manipulating it. This link has a limit, and if exceeded, the slime mass will return to its regular inert state of helplessness when separated from the core. While there is no hard limit on the amount of separated slime mass a slime core can control, each instance increases the mental burden, and if the core is overwhelmed, all loose slime will become inert. Further trait levels will reduce the manipulation and strength penalties applied to separated slime, while also allowing it to be controlled over greater distances. There is also a slight reduction in the mental burden of controlling multiple instances of slime mass from additional trait levels. Compatible with other slime traits.>

Yes! Yes!! Yes!!! It's finally happened! Oh gods, pinch me, I must be dreaming…

It was everything I could've wanted and more. Whatever drawback it had was likely entirely circumvented by my uncapped [Slime Mastery] trait. As for the so-called mental burdens, they would be greatly diminished thanks to my glorious [Sub-Cores] and [Core Collective], which buffed all of our processing ability.

Usually, I would speculate a bit about a new ability, but I wanted to dive right in, so I cut off my arm and let it fall to the floor. I thought I would need to activate the trait, but it seemed to have an almost passive effect as I could feel my severed arm still linked to me.

I had the arm begin to move, which it did without any issue. I then had it start transforming first into various objects, then into small creatures. There was no issue at all in my ability to manipulate it, which was exactly what I had been hoping for.

It was a bit hard to define the experience; it was definitely not the same as being directly connected to my core, despite [Slime Mastery] doing its best. Numb was the only word I could think of to describe how I felt about the separated slime, as if I knew it was my arm and could still move it, but there was a tiny disconnect.

It feels a bit like an upgraded version of [Hydrokinesis]... I'm a little surprised it wasn't called [Slimekinesis], to be honest.

I produced more slime and began manipulating and separating all of it. I had a multitude of tiny blobs of slime bouncing around and shaping into various forms, none of which caused me any significant issue. I had the blobs join together and take on bigger forms, then divine and make smaller, all of it was well within my capabilities.

There's got to be some limits…

I created a small bird and had it fly away from me. I was genuinely shocked at how far it was flying, and it almost seemed like I wouldn't reach the maximum range, until eventually I felt my control over it fading. I roughly estimated that I could fully control slime within a radius of just under two hundred meters, but I could probably push it to two-fifty if I was okay with reduced control.

Rather than having the bird return to me, I tried to detonate it, only to find that I couldn't, which was when I discovered my first limit to this newfound ability. I created another bird, this time intentionally using [Nitro Slime] before separating it and sending it out. This time, I had no issue causing it to detonate, which was exactly what I suspected.

Okay, so I need a slime core to change the composition of the slime mass. That's not too much of a drawback, to be honest, as what's stopping me from including a [Sub-Core] to act as the "alpha" of the slime pack?

I created another larger bird and included a [Sub-Core] into it. I had it meet up with the slime bird, incapable of exploding, and when they touched, I effortlessly reconfigured its slime composition. This was great as the [Sub-Core] bird didn't even need to be [Nitro Slime], just its mere presence was enough to reconfigure the properties of my slime, likely thanks to [Core Collective] treating it as the primary core in this circumstance.

I had the bird fly away, ready to detonate, when I made a startling discovery. It was over three hundred meters away from me, yet I could still control it without any issue whatsoever.

My [Sub-Cores] act like relay points! Oh, this just gets better and better!

Truthfully, I had suspected this might be the case, but I almost didn't want to say it, as the disappointment of it not being true would be immeasurable. I wasn't sure if this was a feature or an oversight, but I certainly wouldn't complain, unless it was suddenly taken away from me.

With this, I need even fewer cores stationed at the island… I don't need tendrils wrapped across the land, which is also great!

I quickly activated [Split Personality] to send over some information to my personas, updating them on the situation and my current discoveries. While keeping it a secret might have been fun, especially to surprise Vee, I wasn't sure how long I'd be down here, and I wanted my personas to have all the tools at their disposal.

Plus, who knows, they might think of a way to use this ability that I haven't thought of yet. Might as well brainstorm together in this case.

I recalled the slime core and the bird, and then began formulating my plan to conquer this labyrinth once and for all. With [Slime Puppetry], I could send minions across every twist and turn, uncovering the final destination through sheer numbers.

I cackled with delight just thinking about it. This was quickly becoming the best day ever!

Kasamuri

Thanks for the chapter!

Profile Name

Tyftc Trixie is gonna be worried for real now

Wensber

Thanks for the chapter!

Kasamuri

The sub core in the Alpha of the pack of slime could probably be used to carpet bomb an area. Use the rift to teleport slime mass up to it, turn it into primed nitro slime that explodes on contact with the ground.

Tekbox

divine -> divide > I had the blobs join together and take on bigger forms, then divine and make smaller, all of it was well within my capabilities.

Arnold Grobler

The labyrinth master seeing the previous elvish mage go full eldritch horror to devour the slime only to start spawning explosive birds: Yoooo! WTF!

enderman

Trait [Heal Slime LV 2] gained. I think this was supposed to be [Necrotic Slime LV 5]

Nemesis

The black slime had [Heal Slime]? Its antithesis? Interesting...

Nemesis

All of a sudden all I can think of is that Syl has moved from a cabled LAN to WiFi 😂

Nemesis

If the labyrinth master wasn't aware before, then it definitely knows now that Syl is a slime, and a crazy one at that

Nemesis

One last thought. Does Syl not get to choose uncapped extra powers for the traits she integrates? There is no way a previous slime has selected anything for these, but Syl doesn't receive the prompt...

Malphir

Initial notification says the core gives Heal Slime instead of Necrotic Slime. Also you used divine instead of divide when Syl was experimenting with puppetry.

enderman

I think this is better than needing to use 10 skill points to uncap every new slime trait.

enderman

Umm Syl. Your real body is a slime core so did you check if just your slime going to places will update your map? Also do the sub cores update map?

enderman

Feels like a Disney twist villain revealing itself.

PickledTink

More like an evil Disney princess.

Choronach

And Syl is still on it's best behavior. I can't wait to see the reaction of the Labyrinth Master when all pretenses will fall 😂

Disclancer

So just golden left to go of all known slime types?

Touch

Edit then divine and make smaller divide

Touch

Can she control it through personal rift?

Nemesis

Like finding out Snow White was actually the wicked witch all along 😂

Tsorov

You could do that without a slime core too now. Just make it Nitro slime from the beginning, and then make kamikaze birds. A normal falcon already dives at ca. 120 km/h, a magical one will be much faster.

Kasamuri

True, but having a massive bird drop basically an unlimited amount of bombs has some style

Davi(d)

pretty sure there was a copper one as well, no? or at least syl commented how it should exist bc there's golden and silver, either as reasoning or as a complaint

Tsorov

That is the ultimate proving ground for Supervillains. Say it with me: PRESENTATION!!!

Ivy

Oh no… she could really just take over the world with clones of herself now.

mapts

I feel like the holy slime should be white and golden should be something else cool, but yeah I think the only one she knows about for sure is the gold slime

enderman

I think in the original folklore snow white does make the witch dance on hot coals.

Disclancer

Ahh, yes! Now you mention it I seem to remember something along similar lines! So not quite the omnislime yet!

Alexander Andrews

Well now Syl can REALLY establish that all her personalities are different people... Just have all of them "meet up" at an adventurers guild.

Vorthod Wiler

"Oh no, the invader now has black slime properties. Quick! Send that slime that uses holy magic at it!"

Vorthod Wiler

Slime (Black) Core absorbed. Trait [Heal Slime LV 2] gained. I think this was supposed to say [Necrotic Slime LV 5]

Vorthod Wiler

Why use a rift? The cores literally share a spatial storage.

Kasamuri

Yeah, I meant the storage, not the rift :D

Colton Horton

Hahaha! The scene in Shrek two where she sics all the woodland animals on the guards just popped into my head, and its PERFECT for this situation! 🤣

Magnus

Wait... she hasn't tried it yet but her rifts should basically make her range infinite. She can just keep a rift open and puppet any slime on the other side no matter the distance. The rifts could probably be really tiny too, since only the signal needs to keep coming through it. Also just made me think, I wonder what Sylvester can do by combining this with his ice golems. And maybe if they could put a subcore in a golem, since they were carving enchantments on the cores anyway.

Azurite Paladin

Syl: Oooo a gold slime thanks for the meal DM: wait what

Cathsaigh

"With [Slime Puppetry], I could send minions across every twist and turn, uncovering the final destination through sheer numbers." Practically speaking could have done that anyway if not for the need to not be outed as a slime before getting the black core. She has plenty of slime mass to just send a tendril down every tunnel.

Cathsaigh

Could've done that before anyway. This might make it slightly easier, but she could already have multiple disconnected personas.

Cathsaigh

White is already taken by cryo slime, if holy was white what would ice be?

Vorthod Wiler

I would guess that subcores do since they are extra brains that can use skills, but the slime itself would basically be like stretching an arm out and expecting the map to update, which seems unlikely

Vorthod Wiler

I think copper had some of gramps' dev notes in it so I don't think it's implemented, but I would have to check. There was also some slime that could change its weight, i think

BlueMage_VT

Labyrinth Master: "Oooooooh sh*t. This was NOT supposed to happen! Black slimes are supposed to be limited to the biggest dungeons, not free roaming!" Mutation Dungeon Master: "Basically what I said about orange slimes." Labyrinth Master: "Wait, orange? This one was making explo- OH NO." Mutation Dungeon Master: "OH NO."

BlueMage_VT

Jokes aside, Syl SHOULD be able to access the subtrait while the primary is toggled off, yes?

Ben Bailey

Wow. Syl has basically become a God Slime. The Core Collective prevents anyone killing her as long as she a Slime Core hidden somewhere and no she has WiFi connection Slime. Please let the next chapter be a Gods POV. Speaking of which I think Gramps and Mother are going to be in big trouble when the other gods find out the Gramps had made a super slime and Mother gave Syl those magic skills!

Gus N

Gold, copper, and cloud left I believe. Was there also a Grey slime or something? I don't remember.

N/a

The grey slime is the one that can change its weight. It serves as an ambush predator. Or rather a living trap, just falling from the ceiling to squish an adventurer. If I recall correctly, it's neither common nor very rare.

yumri4

Why? Trixie is a being of pure mana so 0 life force to begin with. I think the pixies in this story work like that or is it just spirits?

yumri4

To which Syl will just absrob it too though for how this is going a Holy Slime Core is most likely not int this place as it would want Holy stuff not to absorb negative energies.

yumri4

Yeah but now much less slime mass used to do so as it just has to be slime mass instead of slime mass + a sub core going to explode

BlueMage_VT

I think Trixie is gonna be concerned about the slime puppetry and being in so many places at once

BlueMage_VT

I NEED Vee to make this joke!!

Quinton Thornes

Awesome. Last ones left to get are Cloud, Gray and Gold. Copper was a proposed species, not an official one. That one could be a wire based slime? Anyway, I unironically believe that Gray may be one of Syl's best weapons against the Dragon. It's weight shift ability gives would give Syl immense physical force in striking attacks as well as grappling moves. I can't help but imagine a slime pile driving a dragon out of the sky.

Quinton Thornes

Additionally, I believe you, and a lot of people forgot about the Cloud Slime. They are known to be highly fragile. So it makes sense for Syl to discount them. But a good way for her to even get that one is by aspecting the rooms of her Dungeon to different elements. She could have gotten one from a cloud island, assuming it survived long enough for her to find one. The real advantage of the cloud slime is that it can probably control atomized slime mass. Something Syl cannot do.

me blue

'when separated from the core'

Hayden Leech

I wonder how Syl knows about vampires but not sharks.

Vorthod Wiler

Considering the range limits, it feels like its more a visual change than functional when it comes to split personalities acting independently. This basically just replaces the need for the visible slime web, but it still requires them to stay close to each other if they want to remain in the same Core Collective network.

Davi(d)

there's also sanguine!! i actually can't wait for her to have her own dungeon and be able to create her own slimes to eat

Napalm078

'I started laughing with joy, my slime wiggling with delight as my form distorted. I was simply that happy about what I'd just gained that I could barely contain myself anymore.' Mmmmmmmmm. That's not gonna be terrifying. 'However, it did give me the idea of trying to eat ghosts, since they technically count as dark, corrupted energies, right?' :D Thank you for the chapter >:D

Ph34r_n0_3V1L

Trait [Heal Slime LV 2] gained. -> Trait [Necrotic Slime LV 5] gained.

Ventus

Slime golem!!!

Ventus

I dont think we even know all types yet. I most certaimly hope so. Ohh and with all the inspirstion from syl gramps is probaly making new ones this instant.

Ventus

I wonder if syl will get gravity affinity/magic from the grey slime.

Ventus

Yup the world is doomed. Trixie will probably faint to. I mean at this point world domination/destruction is totally possible.

Ventus

Isn't there stil a dragon searching for her?

Harrgoth

I miss Trixie I'd really like to see her return soon. To answer your question I don't think she would be concerned about the necrotic slime but the slime puppetry and split personality now make it so that there are quite literally multiple Slys which was something she was always very concerned about begging her to never become a Queen slime.
