This episode was intended to feel like a cross between science fiction and soap opera. Actually, they hired a soap opera writer who had also written for Doctor Who to write this one specifically for that reason. The main purpose was to make it campy and funny, but I believe that's why this ongoing "love-triangle" element got pulled in again, since that is a very soap opera thing to do. I totally agree that it really is the one thing in this episode that ruins it. If they'd left that out this would be a hilarious banger of an episode. Don't get me wrong, I do really enjoy this episode, but like you guys the Gwen and Jack thing makes me uncomfortable.
