The original Nosferatu silent movie (1922) wasn't supposed to be big and famous. It was a small production company in Germany who were trying to do a movie adaption of the novel Dracula. They thought by chaning the location from London to Germany, the name from Dracula to Orlok, and making him ugly instead of endearing that it would be fine. Bram Stoker had since passed so is wife had inherited the estate. Money was running low so when she heard of this random German silent movie she tried to sue them. They didn't have any money so the court ordered every copy be destroyed. They'd already send a few copies internationally, and that's the only reason the movie exists today. To explain the end, Orlok has to return to the soil he was buried in (which he keeps in his coffin) before the cock crows, i.e. before the sun rises. Her role was to make him believe she wanted him to distract him long enough that he wouldn't notice the sun coming up. Fun Fact: Nosteratu is responsible for the Vampire lore that sunlight kills them. Even in Dracula he can move around during the day, it just irritates him.
