I asked myself the same question; why can't the deaf lady just write it down? So I did some research and found out that most lifelong deaf people who learn ASL as their first language, typically learn English reading/writing as a second language. ASL has its own syntax and structure, meaning a deaf patient's written English may follow ASL grammar patterns, leading to medical history or symptom descriptions being misconstrued by hearing doctors. So for that reason they prefer to wait for an official translator.
