You're right this was definitely divisive amongst the fanbase when the reveal of the timeless child and infinite regenerations. There is precedent in Classic Who with a Fourth Doctor story of us seeing other faces prior to 1-4 that hinted at past lives before the First Doctor. As someone who's also watched Classic Who the retcon they did didn't really bother me too much because we were alluded to it in an old Who story.

This was massively controversial. To this day I see people trying to fit this into their own head cannon, but actually it already does fit in without too much of a headache. It was already established back in the 70's that the Doctor previously had other iterations before the first (that we know) Doctor. People also get hung up on the fact that Matt Smith was going to die if he wasn't given extra regenerations, but I think it's completely feasible that either 1) they didn't know about the timeless child and granted regenerations that the Doctor didn't even need in the first place, or 2) they pretended to give him regenerations to keep up the pretense. I think the biggest issue really is that during Classic Who they specifically didn't want the Doctor to be anything special or God like. The Doctor was just a timelord who decided to run away. This rewrites all of that, but it is what it is. I loved most of this two part finale. The only thing I didn't particularly like was the fact that Gallifrey is once again destroyed. I don't know what it is with NuWho but they just love to act like Galifrey doesn't matter. Anyway, on to the New Year Special.
